  • These comments are more interesting than the interview. If she wants to smoke, what difference is it to anyone else? Joni DES not think like the normal humanoid. To most of the world, she isa whack job and a whore. But I understand her completely.

  • HOLY CRAP!!! That was pretty deep and for some strange reason I actually understood exactly what she was talking about and where she was coming from.

  • it depends on the person....you can't say that all smokers will die of cancer caused by smoking, just like you can't say that non-smokers won't die of cancer. As she mentioned in her interview, she is a nervous type, and excuses her smoking as a need for her system.

  • Autism - one in 47. There is something biological going on there. Bad injections.

  • i need to smoke myself,and i smoke everything

  • we could go and say negative things about anyone ,,get a grip ,,she is a amazing person ,,the pope ,Einstein whoever had faults ,,but don't bag on about smoking ,,that is small thinking,,you must be a reform or small thinking

  • For those who are so inclined, read Joe Jackson's opinion piece on smoking. Another favourite musician of mine, and a brilliant man. When you have an extremely talented person in front of you, to admonish them on smoking is ridiculous. When interviewing somebody who is gifted, I don't give a rat's ass about what the interviewer thinks about anything, especially not smoking. Imagine asking Einstein or Shakespeare or Beethoven about their vices. Yeesh.

  • She managed to say 'my ora sticks out further than normal' with a totally straight face. Too easy, maybe. The woman is certainly controlled. I don't personally care that she smokes, tho I can't stand it myself. We can comfortable rate her on her musical contribution, which is vast.

  • Joni Mitchell smoked since she was nine years ol.

Steve Jobs only ate fruit.Look were that got him.

  • @YouriCarma Good point. In fact, Steve Jobs, due to his ideology, delayed treatment for quite some time. Had he not avoided traditional treatment it is highly likely that he'd still be alive today (though for how much longer, it's impossible to say).

  • @YouriCarma ? You're trying to make consistent a disease that's not.

  • Is there any more?

  • dont get me wrong, im as old as she is, this old bitch is still cool, i somewhat liked her music in the day, it was my x wifes favorite , but how in the day for a man not to like the doors a little better,i havent seen my x in 20 years, i bet she holds up well, like this lady, god bless

  • I personally dislike women who smoke in general....not feminine, not pretty, not sexy and I would not want to date a woman who smokes...unladylike for sure. Not that smoking is a masculine thing, but seems more of a guy thing for me...at the risk of sounding sexist. Also, she calls it a "grounding herb" which is total BS when the herb is loaded with cancer causing agents, carcinogens, chemicals and other crap. Sorry Joni, marijuana is a much healthier choice than cigarettes or grounding herb.

  • @amazingenoughful

chicks who smoke..i let them toke on my tool but i wrefuse to kiss them..especially after i loose a quart in their mouth

  • @ChiroQuacker Women give bad head' gay men do it best. They taught me

but like most women, I really don't like it.

  • So much love, so much hate.

  • no matter of negative or positive comments of Joni ,she has wrote great rock and jazz songs before her own critics were even born .She garnerd awardes and great respect from her peers and rollingstone magazine with the order of Canada .

  • I 'mentally pick up' people 33-60 feet away with the same facility she speaks of, but since not watching TV or hanging out in crowds, I do now hang out on You Tube and read the comments... here the pure unbridled ugliness, the selfish small minded stupidity, the ignorant idiotic fascism... has hardened me up a bit, sort of like Joni's cigarettes... so I get it.

  • @doceigen

Very interesting to read what you wrote about "picking up people".Your other comments are very true.

  • @doceigen - I gather you're talking about yourself? Joni seems to do this to. Something of a generational thing, I suppose. The 60's are over for SOME people but others seem to still be there. Maybe what we're talking about here is not so much a "facility" but a kind of vanity. Born out of drugs and booze, half the people you used to "pick up on" were probably wondering what the hell you were staring at. While I agree most Americans are dumb as dirt, you don't seem to be heading up a revolution.

  • @thegrinchl7 Head up a 'revolution'? If you were half as smart as you think you are, you'd notice I said I do not watch TV or hang out in crowds, so... where is this 'revolution'? And yes, I was talking about myself, WHY?!... are you a representative of the mainstream cynical no dreams left collective, who thinks they have a clue as to 'how things actually work'? You people are but dreamless proxies, who tout nothing but the bland party line of pre-morbidity cyber failures... big deal.

  • @thegrinchl7 Joni Mitchell she was a big lesson not learned. She sang about what she saw and was serious and precise about her descriptions. That commercial hit, big yellow taxi, was understood by all, and yet that concept never entered the mind of most people before she wrote it. Visionary artist and touched by God.

  • @THEJET52 - I think human beings ought to be careful

about the words they use. "Genius", "touched by god" and

"visionary artist" (what other kind are there?) are used so

often now that they're cliches. I might understand "Big

Yellow Taxi" but that doesn't mean I agree with it. I find her

PERSONALLY and MUSICALLY less than compelling. Her

voice is often intentionally discordantIf (?). If she has "talent"

it seems to lie in her ability to justify SMOKING CIGARETTES

    and CHILD ABANDONMENT.

  • Thankyou for sharing this video. Same for me (I call them journeys), very thankful to find this interview! I haven't tried hard drugs but wonder if some of the aspects are similar? And thank you Joni for the music, a beautiful jewel from Saskatchewan!!

  • OMG....Tavis is like, "what was my question"??....lol.

You can ask Joni simple questions,,,,,but don't expect a simple answer.

  • Joni's got something to say about everything - I mean everything! But yes, if Joni's brains were jingle bells, she would sure make a racket!

  • Jodi...? Why did that give me a giggle. I love you Joni.

  • I have ALWAYS loved Joni and nothing She says here will in any way diminish her talent, BUT, ... man ... the sixties were sure good to her, as She still seems to be stuck there. Aura?? Antenna?? Gap to her subconscious ??? screw the smoking issue, that's the LEAST of it.

  • I think of Joni as an idiot savant, musically she's brilliant but if brains were jingle bells would Joni make a sound? Something to meditate on.

  • Diane Rovell is still gorgeous and I love her look Hey wait a minute LOL

  • Well, it is a shame that they spend so much time talking about "herbs" and smoking. More time should be spent discussing the two great albums "Court & Spark" and "Blue"....period.

  • @vegasnites777 Tavis didn't spend so much time talking about it; Joni did. I love Joni, and think she's one of the great geniuses ever, but it's almost funny to hear her rationalizing her smoking addiction.

  • @vegasnites777 and For The Roses and Hejira.

  • all she talks about is smoking. Maybe that is why she is so sick with that skin disease now, smoking.

  • @adorejunk Oh I know a lot of non smokers who are so sick because they eat crap fast food etc. America is fat but its ok to stuff your face and raise health costs and there skin looks all blotchy but if you smoke your evil. Ha Ha This country is anal and trained and boring. Give me bettie Davis or Joan Mitchelll smoking than some fast food boring non smoker.

  • @ghoula69 I agree totally with you, that is why I am a vegan who eats raw. Jodi admits to smokes since she was 9, but as singer that is insane. When your angelic voice is your career, why risk hurting it with smoking? Jodi has Morgellon's syndrome and says she has had it for the last 20 years. I would say that smoking has to contribute to any disease and most certainly this one.

  • @adorejunk I think the deeper voice defines a lot of her later work.

  • @adorejunk Her name is Joni. Not Jodi.

  • She got older for sure...is still awesome, and a true artist indeed. She touched me in a way few artists do..with her songs about men, life...I love Joni.

  • Comment removed

  • SHE AINT NO CHRISTIAN, that's for sure.

  • "I once had a thief brush by me and go, "Thief". She once said that everyone in her life stole from her. I think her wallet "sticks out further than normal", not her "aura". And tobacco is a "grounding herb"? If this was your average, anonymous, smoker, I wonder if Mr. Smiley would have been as indulgent. Also, the issue is cigarette smoking which is a dirty, noxious, fetid habit - a prison, the opposite of sex and romance, (her recurring themes) and she knows it. She thinks we're stupid.

  • I always wondered when this condition would be explained so accurately...she did it so well!

  • What the HELL is she taking about??!!! :-)

  • @IAWAF Calm down,..It's ok; You wouldn't understand..... don't think she's 'taking' anything, but she is talking quite a bit. ... and she talks about you in the CharlieRose interview; go see it.

  • I love her.

  • What an ass - asking about her smoking. it's a f'n disease - not the smoking, but the self-righteous, conformist, groupthink that has taken over the world. We are no longer allowed to be individuals. Political correctness, suppression of individuality, etc. One giant monolithic, corporate ideology. What a shame.

  • @slickvguy

what bullshit u are...how about the secondary smoke as she puffs it into her friends faces....and when the doc tells her that persistent cough she has.."well we'll have to do a lung x-ray"...and when he shows a huge neoplasm....

well...shes right ...tobacco is a grounding herb...it will put u in the ground

travis asked a legit question...not to be mean...but how does a brilliant woman would out cancer sticks in her mouth daily for decades?

    hard to believe...RIP

  • @ChiroQuacker I can forgive the stupidity, but not the rudeness. I wonder why it is that people like you can't handle opposing viewpoints? Also, your post is borderline (pardon the pun) incoherent. Smoking is a personal choice and it's nobody's business. It's as inappropriate as asking her about oral sex. 2nd hand smoke is nonsense (unless you work in a bar or place where you are constantly breathing in smoke), used by puritanical finger-waggers to get their way.

  • @slickvguy

    you friggin bonehead..

joni does most of her smoking at home...no in bars...at her home she has pets..the beloved pets reek from smoke and are inhaling it 24/7,,.THATS CALLED ANIMAL CRUELTY

and what about concern for her friends and family...oh yeah thats right she dont have a family...no spouse...no children or grandchildren are in her life..especially after she slapped her long lost daughter in the face...daughter called LAPD filed report...FACT

    i hope u smoke..RIP muthafucker

  • @slickvguy Why not ask about it? I don't understand what it has to do with "groupthink."

  • Lazurm,

I appreciate your comments, but we have differing opinions. She has a known brain disorder, which talks about herself. Tangential thought processes are typical for this disorder. I'm not dissing her or criticizing her, I wish it weren't so, but it just is. Hauser43 kind of hit on the point in maybe a more street sense way. Whatever. She's still a very talented person.

  • I love Joni Mitchell but what a bunch of cosmic bullshit.

  • @Hauser43 LOL!!! I agree; good thing we have her records, huh?

  • I still love Joni Mitchell

  • @dogcrazy, I think as DAHKSYDE, the problem is not smokers, its tyrants that want people to die if they don't do what they want them to. Hitler, Stalin, Mao, they didn't let you do anything unless they authorized it, we are heading down the same road. Schools are the same way, kids can have sex, abortions, cheat and stuff, but don't smoke that is worse than any else. Sounds like you need a brain cleaning and I don't mean washing, you've already had that.

  • Let he who is without sin throw the first stone at her.....interviewers

  • It's good to hear this fine lady speaking favourably about smoking. Here in the UK smokers have become the new lepers. If you smoke here your looked down upon and forced to leave the room or stand in the street. And this by one of the most degerate, generations this country has ever produced. Our youth are alcoholics and drug abusers par excellence. And this is accepted a normal. Yet smoking is fround upon. What a f----d up place this country is.

  • Black sabrani's did she say?

She is so wise and still kind of humorous as well.

  • tavis smiley is a turd

  • Do you really think Joni smokes those chemical-laden death sticks one finds at the corner store? Tobacco is not what causes cancer, all the other crap that goes into the average cigarette is the culprit.

  • @amandaberesford The amount of by-product in a cigarette is infintesimally small. Although, I agree I do not want things like asbestos, cyanide, etc. in any amount -- I don't care how tiny. But let's face it, the chemical by-product hit from cigarettes isn't the only danger. When you burn anything - even an organic weed like tobacco or pot -- you're still inhaling a burnt product which produces carbon poisoning in the lungs and bloodstream and eventually heart failure, organ faliure or cancer.

  • Smoke up Joni it's christmas

    Everyone has a different tolerance

level - not to mention - she's over 18 - knows the diff. - accepts what happens

Her tolerance must be at superhuman levels

because she hasn't died from public bullshit yet!

  • she started at 9...she's now 66 (almost 67)...this music genius seems fine...my mother-in-law's 81, a staunch smoker since her teens...and is in fine health...to each his/her own

bottom line, we live our own lives and we're ALL GOING TO DIE...no one's immune to that

    Joni rocks!

  • It's a shame that such a talented soul is slowly killing herself with cigarettes - but it's what she wants to do so more power to her!

  • A true tired old bag who has one of the more unique rationales for her cigareete smoking. Geez what a wingnut! It's called nicotine addiction...save that Morphine drip for when the lung cancer metastasizes to the bone (at least it will not effect her mentation. She's nuts already) As for cancer this isn't an 'if' it is a 'when' unless heart disease hits 1st.

  • Ok - you want the bitter truth? NONE of us are going to get out of this alive!

  • Cancer cures smoking.

    -jcr

  • @NSResponder lol, yeah, by KILLING you!

  • Like Joni, I had my first puff of a cigarette at a very early age. I think I was 8. I'm 10 years younger than her, but recently I had a heart attack. While I had a few bad eating habits, I attribute my problems to heavy smoking, since there is little genetic history of heart disease in my family. I loved smoking, Now I am 46 days cold turkey and rehabbing nicely. I'd light up with Joni in a second, but however she rationalizes the "benefits" of smoking is just that: rationalization.

  • Here's the "Deal" with Joni Mitchell

-Her Music and Lyrics are Intensely Personal--

Thus Intensely Personal People Can Gyrate To Her Beat and Weep Over Her Incredible Ourpourings that are -- intensely persional and autobiographical...

Extremely well crafted poetry and imagry hellp her depict, thus they serve her greatly---it flows...

    A Great Talent with Words.

    So Be IT!

  • thanks to 'nutjobs', we get beautiful music, thoughts, stories, poems, art... i wish more people were a little nutty.

  • Hmmmm

  • DB,

That's ok. It's just an observation about a person with a seemingly very good heart. As I said, I hope it was temporary, but it's not functional to speak or think in that way. I understand it appears maybe simply unusual or peculiar, unless you see it from a diagnostic perspective. It's like a person having a fever, it's just a symptom of something underlying, maybe very brief.

  • It would be easy to think she is simply eccentric, or lost. But this is disordered thought from either a cognitive or psychological impairment. She is speaking in a fragmented, tangential process, with bizarre and deluded content. This is hopefully temporary, possibly a result of several neurological disorders in her history. It's there to a lesser degree in other interviews. A brilliant mind.

  • Comment removed

  • Okay... I was a little sarcastic there. Please dont take it personally, as it was not meant to offend. I just dont like this view of the world that everybody has a disorder and should be on Ritalin, or something like that. People are different, and they're SUPPOSED to be that way. Its not a disorder.

  • (I deleted the previous post to which I was referring)

  • @walnutstreet1 It sounds as though you didn't understand what Joni was saying. She was quoting others and her body language revealed her doubts as to what some of them said, while taking in what she deemed useful. Not disordered, impaired or tangential at all.

  • Comment removed

  • I'm not a smoker but Joni is so good at it that she makes it seem so pure and natural. Mind you, she likes cigarettes that are almost pure tobacco, not filled with the kind of carniogenic toxins in manufactured ones. Smoking pure tobacco will still damage you in ways but maybe its relative natural quality is why Joni seems to carry on without significant problems though I'm sure cancer will get her in the end. But she's 66- too old to stop now!

  • Comment removed

  • Listen, She's so intelligent it's scary ..she is the Virgina Woolf of Music...to be THAT gifted/ talented ... to those of us less intelligent...we can't understand the Genius ....some people just don't get it...and I don't think Joni is trippin' about what people think...xo

  • Yikes! Love her music, but ...ooops! Wrong Planet!

  • I was wowed by her music when I 1st heard it in '73, but I never saw her interviewed 'till today. The gal is a whack job! LOL...strait out of the 60's! But thats cool.

  • What is a "whack job", and how does Joni Mitchell, in all her brilliant insight into human nature and courageous honesty, qualify as one?

  • I don't remerber the content of the interview, but if I said whack job I meant she was a little buggy, half stoned on pot or drunk.

  • Seen this lady as a 17yr old....fell in love with her voice, then her music...and the romance has lasted 37yrs! Genius is a word that is overused....in Joni's case it is inadequate!

  • wow that is beautiful. It's true there are no words to completely describe this woman's incredible gifts.

I only wish she wasn't such a cig head ;-) I could see cigarette companies rubbing their hands together in glee for her praise of tobacco.

  • I Offiacialy love her

  • antennas she has now lost the plot officially

  • she has cosmic conciousness

  • Joni went to art school. Everything she says sounds normal to me.

  • @kirkindysolospock That is because everyone in art school was dropping blotter and listening to folk music.

  • Whew... o...k....

  • I wish she didn't smoke, but she does. More importantly, she is a true artist and many true artists have sensitivities that require something to deal with them. Joni, like John Lennon is one of the more important songwriters of not only our time, but of all time. Also like John Lennon, Joni is an open book, has a world view and picks up things that you or I wouldn't. So of course she lives life differently than you or I.

"Don't criticize what you can't understand." (Bob Dylan)

  • ...is she crazy?

  • babygwar,

why didn't the cops arrest 'sweet joni' cuz she is rich thats why!

  • I love her song "A Case of You" its amazing

  • @TasteMe555 i love ''help me'

  • This lady is a true artist. She has written so many great songs and paints and some of you are so pathetic that all you talk about is that she smokes. Jesus martha you people are so fucking lame.

  • @ghoula69

Totally agree! I drink coffee, Joe down the road burps...who cares!!;-)

  • @ghoula69 typical fundamentalists who believe they'll be judged on something as pathetic as cussing even...usually, they can't the the wood for the trees in real live...they are prominently living in isolation...oh yeah, like hermits, with nothing better to do.

  • @ghoula69 The thing is, this clip is from an interview in which she talks about smoking. You want to talk about her great songs and her painting? Great! Post a clip where she is interviewed about her great songs or her painting, and go for it!

  • @ghoula69 Agreed. One of the true music legends of all time, yet all they can comment on is some trivial, petty shit about her smoking. They have no idea what a consummate genius she is (and always has been)

  • This guy has no idea what she is talking about - 1:30 "..uh huh.."

  • she's way cool and she smokes......some comments here are truly meanspirited and have no bearing on her beliefs which she is nice enough to share. This is not a syposium on smoking its just a glimpse at an artist and her world.

  • Yeah, you're a fine example of a self centered ego :) Congratulations.

Like ddviolinist says... You just don't get it :) Poor you.

  • your right....

  • Your full of your own shit you pecker head

  • gee your right too. so many clever people setting things straight on the tube.

  • You blow, Your jealous of her talent, period.

  • hey your so smart. how did you know?

  • Comment removed

  • Yeah and most people if not smoking are stuffing their faces with meat and sweats and trans fats. I know so many people who don't smoke who are fat and sick. Can't you just appreciate her music? She smoking near you

  • and voice

  • She is absoutely wonderful. an amazing artist who is interesting as a person!

  • she isn't rambling. You just don't get it.

  • smoking, just as drinking, isn't the problem. Genetics is the problem. Some people smoke and drink their entire lives and never get bad effects, others can't. It's genetics. But you can't tell that to a nanny state that lumps everyone together. So much for freedom.

  • That is so biologically and scientifically wrong it's hilarious. But genetics do play into it.

  • sheburns12: it's called freedom. Until political correctness people were free to decide for themselves how they would live. Being free means being free to do stupid things. Abe Lincoln said "my freedom stops where your nose begins."

  • ...that's great, but you still posted claims that were completely factually incorrect. I don't even know why you just posted this, nothing I said debated freedom. Claiming that "genetics" is the problem is biologically and scientifically incorrect and if you had done any research instead of listening to someone who is speaking solely out of personal experience then you would know that as well.

There's nothing much else to say. What you just said has nothing to do with anything.

  • I personally know people in their 70's and 80's who smoke like a chimney and are in perfect health for their age.Smoking in itself does not guarantee health problems.

  • So you honestly believe that because of your tiny diagnostic, it goes to represent that everyone in the world functions in the same manner? That it's either bad health problems or it's not?

Unless you have done x-rays and ultrasounds on them yourself, you have absolutely no say in whether or not those people have health problems.

And FYI, the degeneration of Joni's voice nowadays is due to her smoking since she was 9 years old. Genetics can make health problems vary but not disappear.

  • Smoking since 9 - if only she hadn't,her gorgeous voice would still be without

peers.Still love her (and I have NEVER

smoked).I am also one of those with the

    extra large antennae (aura)
