  • Awesome argument.

  • I hate when people claim to know a truth that can't be known...

  • 6:10 made me laugh out loud. He said "Go ahead, go ahead." Then as soon as he started talking, he interrupted.

  • (Scotty? Scotty? Beam me up? Now? PLEASE????)

  • Fuck this clown

  • i have no relationship with god, and i am a perfectly happy person. i don't see why i should have a relationship with someone else's imaginary friends. and if i were to do so, i think that my relationship with superman should far exceed any relationship i had with god. superman saves lives, and is fairly benevolant, while god floods worlds and creates places to eternally torture those who reject him.

  • Chris Matthews speaks out of both sides of his mouth. He tries to cajole Biship Tobin into saying what laws should be enacted against abortion, yet he condemns Bishop Tobin for supposedly "telling public officials how to set public policy." He never has told Kennedy how to write laws. He has simply asked Kennedy to remain faithful to his Catholic faith in voting for potentially evil policies. How a woman should be punished is not for Bishop Tobin to decide. Matthews should know that: 10:50

  • Pray for criss matt. and other false catholics.

  • "First commitment has to be to your faith." What about atheists?

"Catholics in political office be faithful to the church" Again, what about atheists? And, what about polytheistic religions? What about the other Abrahamic faiths?

"Every time an abortion takes place, a baby dies." Exactly why I support secular government AND legislation.

While I don't really care much for Chris Matthews approach in his interviews, I feel he does a good job of exposing the hypocrisy in religious institutions.

  • When something is illegal YES YOU PUNISH THOSE WHO DO IT! Isn't that one of the primary reasons for things being illegal?

  • This bishop did a terrible job getting his word out, and finally made several good points at the end that should have been emphasized the entire time. Hey Mattews: laws are based on morality not just convenience, popularity, and whether you can efficiently enforce it or not. It is not an illegitmate argument to say that you believe abortion is immoral and thus should be illegal. Murder is immoral, rape is immoral, stealing is immoral, and thus are all illegal.

  • @ZakBrownrigg123 no, the laws we have are not based upon morality, they are based upon keeping order in society. it is illegal to drive without a license, but does this have ANYTHING to do with morality (other than perhaps it is immoral to break the law). rape is illegal because it creates a hostile zone where people can't feal safe, the same with murder. stealing is illegal because it disrupts the orderly process of capatilism. laws are based on order, not on morality.

  • @greycloud24

Order is certainly a big part of it, but morality is as well. Why do you think culture, norms, tradition and values have such a fundamental impact on the law, and why different cultures have vastly different legal frameworks? There is far more to law than simply order, but also to show a reflection of the attitudes of a given society.

  • @ZakBrownrigg123 that is true. but in OUR society, one based upon capitalism, laws are there to keep order. sure there are theocracies where the laws are based upon religious laws and moral laws. but the US is not one of those places. morality itself is a subjective concept, it is not universal. since america is a mixing pot, the laws could not be moral laws, as too many people disagree on what is and is not morally acceptable. your book does not trump my opinions.

  • Chris Matthews is a dumbass... I love how he asks a question then waits a second.... and then asks another. The guy is a dumbass

  • Chris, Chris, Chris...GO TO HELL.

  • And they will keep on fucking young kids!.

  • religion has no place in public policy. if you don't like abortions, don't have one. You may only make that decision for yourself.

  • Exactly. Religious precepts such as thou shall not kill and thou shall not steal have no place in public policy. Or, perhaps, it's only the religious precepts that YOU don't like that have no place in public policy?

  • Don't you understand the difference? Thou shalt not kill and steal are both policies we have no problem issuing a penalty for.

If you out law abortion... What is the penalty? If someone kills someone, we put them in prison. If someone steals, we put them in prison. If someone performs or receives and abortion... Should they go to prison?

That is why making it illegal is ridiculous. Even the Bishop wont say that would be ok.

  • My basic point remains. People such as jln05f and Chris Matthews in this clip pretend to stand for the Church staying out of politics when they really mean staying out of politics only when they are on the "wrong" side of an issue. I'm sure Matthews had no problem with the Church when it condemned apartheid in South Africa.

  • Thats diferant than creating legislation

  • As for for your point about the enforcement of prohibitions or restrictions on abortion, Boobalopbop, many, many prohibitions are difficult to enforce. It is very difficult, for example, to enforce laws against child abuse, and most of us don't want to see parents hauled off to jail or even lose their children for giving them a very occasional whack. However, that doesn't mean we legalize hitting children much less make it a "Constitutional Right".

  • nicely put

  • TO ALL BOGUS CATHOLICS:

Until you REPENT of your support of abortion / gay marriage ect STAY AWAY FROM THE EUCHARIST.

  • This interview made me sick; Matthews is just another PHONEY catholic on his way to HELL;

anyhoo we already have laws that punish criminals that kill an unborn fetus in the act of a crime.

    -----------------

Why do phoney catholics think that they know better than a 2000 yr old institution such as the catholic church? People like Cris Mattews are WHATS WRONG WITH THE CHURCH.

    God bless that Bishop.

  • This country has become so morally corrupt murdering a baby doens't seem all that bad to Matthews. pittiful.

  • This ass wipe of a Bishop has the audacity to speak of MORALS! The Clergy who sexually abuses young boys and has sex with their female parishioners and preaches abstinence. Sexual MISFITS, who are drawn to the clergy, should keep their noses out of other peoples crotches. These are NOT gay men. They hide behind gay bashing to avert your attention

  • They are against abortion because it results in fewer kids to diddle.

  • they shouldnt dignify these idiots by calling them 'excellency', its not the middle ages, there is nothing exceptional or excellent about them, they are shills of a hierarchal system designed to make money and control people

  • You sanctimonious Christards who weep and moan for the unwanted embryo is self serving to make you feel good about yourself. Where is your weeping and moaning for the born? 4 Nov 2009 ... Infant mortality in the U.S. is worse than in 29 other countries, including practically all of Europe, Canada and Australia. These were WANTED babies whose healthcare was ignored. Crotch-watching, banner carrying, Christard breeders care nothing for the born. It is all for the show!

  • Catholics are so hypocritical!

    Matthews made some great points.

  • At NO time should a persons religion enter into office we elect people based on our understanding that they will do a job for us and apply the law

Religion MUST be put aside while serving our country It should NEVER be discussed in congress I should never hear about or know anyones religion while they are working for US in political office.

This is what separation of Church and state is supposed to address.

This man just terminated his churches tax exempt status. Some one wake up the IRS

  • DIRTY JOURNALISM! That was extremely mean of NBC to purposefully and sincerely invite someone to intentionally attack a cleric. Thanks to the other posters for noticing the ardent interuptions, CM is pathetic. Chris Matthews just report the darn news, no opinions please!

  • I believe abortion is immoral. However, Matthews raises a good question of punishment for abortion if Catholics get their way.

I would like if Matthews would let his interviewee talk more than he does

  • Thanks Chris, for cutting to the heart of the issue.

  • Wow will he let the guy talk?

  • This ass wipe of a Bishop has the audacity to speak of MORALS! The Clergy who sexually abuses young boys and has sex with their female parishioners and preaches abstinence. Sexual MISFITS, who are drawn to the clergy, should keep their noses out of other peoples crotches. These are NOT gay men. These sick mother fuckers hide behind gay bashing to avert your attention. They should be burned at the stake!

  • I agree with you brother.

  • Way to go Chris Matthews. Didn't know you had it in ya!

  • Medieval fantasy. The bishop is an incompetent boob.

  • How is this Matthews "pwnig" the bishop? All "tingles" did was keep yammering his mouth, and wouldn't let the bishop get a word in! Matthews is a tool.

  • Why Can't Kennedy Receive Communion?

Patrick Kennedy doesn't have to vote in defense of unborn human life to be member of Congress. But he does have to vote that way to be a member of the Catholic Church. Shame on him for forcing Bishop Thomas Tobin to publicly remind him of something even a child can understand. Bishop Tobin is not telling Cong. Kennedy to vote like a Catholic. He is basically telling him to stop pretending to be one.

  • Matthew would NEVER bully a homo priest the way he did to Bishop Thomas Tobin. Everyone knows it is cowardly, unbecoming and unprofessional to behave this way. Matthew deserves to be sent packing with racist Lou Dobbs. In America, no citizen is obliged to have religious or moral beliefs to serve in elected office. But elected officials claiming to have religious or moral beliefs, are obligated to act and vote consistent with their claimed beliefs to worthy of any credibility, trust, or respect.

  • patrianews: "Matthew would NEVER bully a homo priest the way..."

There is no proof that this bishop is heterosexual. How did you know that he is?

After all, majority of the victims in the child sexual abuse scandal by Catholic churches were boys.

  • No body likes abortion, but the right to chose is an important one, especially since most of the people that want to overturn Roe Vs. Wade are the same people that supported the massive killings in the Iraq war that killed mothers, fathers, and young children. These same people want to cut welfare for low income family's that have to many children, or those family's that can't afford abortions.

It's obvious here that the Bishop has no clear answer to what he would do if he were in congress.

  • Chris Matthew's did a great job here.

When ex-president Kennedy gave his speech on Sept. 12, 1960 while in congress before his election, he did a brave thing for the rights of all woman.

The bishop had to have thought this out before and was in fear of giving a straight answer to what jail sentence woman should receive for receiving an abortion.

Matthew's didn't go into rape or incest, but above all, did give a good debate that will hopefully keep the Clergymen and religion out of law.

    Les xo

  • I think Chris Matthews did an amazing job here. I like it when issues get somewhat more detailed without blowhard generalizations.

  • Abortion is tyranny at its core.

The bishop is in error, give me a break. Chris Matthews is laughable. I hope people don't take this Matthews character serious.

Thank you Bishop for being patient and loving to such an ogre of a Catholic that Matthews is.

Moral law is, has and should always be reflected in the law of the land.

I would like to see Matthews attack a Muslim on tv.

America is no longer a country for and of the people. it is a country of and for special interests & the rich.

  • @1tontomato You are clearly uneducated.

  • Superb job, Matthews!

  • If only MSNBC would attack muslims like they do catholics but that will never happen

  • And the Clergy who sexually abuses young boys and has sex with their female parishioners should go merrily on their way.

Sexual MISFITS, who are drawn to the clergy, should keep their noses out of other peoples crotches.

  • By all means save the unwanted embryo.

Where are you right to lifers when it is born.

Are you going to care for it? No? And why not, since life is so important to you?

You want it to grow up and have a life. Love and be loved. Then send it off to war to kill and be killed. Now there is YOUR brand of morality!

  • TubeManTalk. There are litterally tens of thousands of children adopted every year by those "right to lifers". So yes they will care for "it". As for you war comment, are you saying all right to lifers love war ? Turn down the hate man.

  • booger546: I adopted 3 times and i work in a kids rehab hospital. the majority of folks who adopt are NOT right to lifers. I am tired of seeing, shaken, hurt, raped kids of parents that feel an abortion would have been an immoral option compared to their heinous act.

  • This is about Kennedy being told by this Bishop that he should not be allowed to eat their "Jesus-meat cracker". This is where any sensible person will realize that the bishop & the church do not operate in reality. Kennedy should simply tell this fool to keep his cracker.

Religion is antithetical to a free society. Gods are imaginary dictators. Their "will" has no place in policy debate.

Abortion is a tough moral issue. WE have to wrestle with it, not our imaginary friends.

  • This is why Hardball rocks.

  • God Bless you Bishop for keeping your patience in this interview!

  • I believe in an America that is officially neither Catholic, Protestant nor Jewish; where no public official either requests or accepts instructions on public policy from the Pope, the National Council of Churches or any other ecclesiastical source; where no religious body seeks to impose its will directly or indirectly upon the general populace or the public acts of its officials; and where religious liberty is so indivisible that an act against one church is treated as an act against all."

  • TolsmaLMC:

    - There is no 'god'.

    - Tobin doesn't keep patience. He keeps quiet because he has NOTHING to say. No answers to Matthews questions, no arguments, nada.

I think it's a kind of strange, that an ex-hitler-youth-member, ex-hitler-party follower, fascist-friend and fascist-supporter, ratzinger by name, has the chutzpa to occupy the moral high ground in US or anywhere. the catholic church is the biggest criminal organization in history. Impeach

  • he opposes abortions because he wants to fuck the children or what?

  • I wish all these religious cunts would just fuck off and keep their noses out of people's lives.

  • I was witing for the catholic to suggest that the woman be burned at the stake.

The interviewer was fantastic. Very reasoned.

As for abortion; what about those people who aren't catholics? Should they have to obey catholic authority?

    America is a terrible place

  • Sure, Matthews doesn't want the Church to advise public officials on moral issues when he d-i-s-a-g-r-e-e-e-s with that advice. When he agrees with it, that's a different story. Does anyone really think that Matthews thinks that the Church should have stayed out of the struggle for Black civil rights in America or the movement against apartheid in South Africa?

  • Great points I ask this question all the time!

  • Chris is 100% right. The church would outlaw various activities but the question of society comes down to punishment. How do you punish them? I think the "excellency" was definitely afraid to admit how the Bible would handle such activities. He knows but even he is embarassed by it.

It's not easy to just be moral. We live in the real world with real world issues. We could never hold on to such rabid ideology.

  • I love how he says "Your excellency" and then rattles him.

  • Matthews does a great job here--and I don't always think he does. Interesting that Tobin still couldn't answer the question. Tobin makes a good argument for why religious people shouldn't hold public office.

  • "Your excellency"? How about "You stupid superstitious motherfucker" instead.

  • religion= mind control

  • aw! it needs to be 12 minutes long! Q.Q I want the last words in there!

    Q.Q

  • Amazing! Way to show the disconnection between the church's moral value and a governing law!

  • damn straight like the bishop said they need to quit their jobs the legislature ain't a dern church.

  • Hahaha! Long live atheism!!! He does not even knowhow his moral values shoud be applied by law. No concept of his own system in society. He would probably wait for the pope to tell him.

  • I would most highly recommend following the link in the description to Kennedy's full speech.

I am left rather shocked, appalled, and saddened.. feeling what would seem aptly described as a sense of unreality.

I can scarcely believe that we have fallen so far in only 50 years, so far that it seems almost unbelieveable that a speech like his was even possible.

I quite wish I had known of this speech long ago.

  • That is real pwnage right there.

  • Brilliant approach by Matthews. It's about time someone revealed what shallow-minded-simpletons these religious kooks are.

  • Right on !

  • Damn straight!!! Catholics... Keep your Christ out of MY Congress!

  • Right on !

  • You cannot have separation of Church and State if an elected officials 'first commitment' is to his faith as this clergy member demands. Anyone who cannot separate their religious beliefs and the edicts of their church from their duty to represent all the citizens should be barred from holding public office.

Good for you Chris, in setting him straight on his hypocritical stance on the abortion issue.

  • Right on !
