Chris Matthews speaks out of both sides of his mouth. He tries to cajole Biship Tobin into saying what laws should be enacted against abortion, yet he condemns Bishop Tobin for supposedly "telling public officials how to set public policy." He never has told Kennedy how to write laws. He has simply asked Kennedy to remain faithful to his Catholic faith in voting for potentially evil policies. How a woman should be punished is not for Bishop Tobin to decide. Matthews should know that: 10:50
"First commitment has to be to your faith." What about atheists?
"Catholics in political office be faithful to the church" Again, what about atheists? And, what about polytheistic religions? What about the other Abrahamic faiths?
"Every time an abortion takes place, a baby dies." Exactly why I support secular government AND legislation.
While I don't really care much for Chris Matthews approach in his interviews, I feel he does a good job of exposing the hypocrisy in religious institutions.
This bishop did a terrible job getting his word out, and finally made several good points at the end that should have been emphasized the entire time. Hey Mattews: laws are based on morality not just convenience, popularity, and whether you can efficiently enforce it or not. It is not an illegitmate argument to say that you believe abortion is immoral and thus should be illegal. Murder is immoral, rape is immoral, stealing is immoral, and thus are all illegal.
@ZakBrownrigg123 no, the laws we have are not based upon morality, they are based upon keeping order in society. it is illegal to drive without a license, but does this have ANYTHING to do with morality (other than perhaps it is immoral to break the law). rape is illegal because it creates a hostile zone where people can't feal safe, the same with murder. stealing is illegal because it disrupts the orderly process of capatilism. laws are based on order, not on morality.
Order is certainly a big part of it, but morality is as well. Why do you think culture, norms, tradition and values have such a fundamental impact on the law, and why different cultures have vastly different legal frameworks? There is far more to law than simply order, but also to show a reflection of the attitudes of a given society.
@ZakBrownrigg123 that is true. but in OUR society, one based upon capitalism, laws are there to keep order. sure there are theocracies where the laws are based upon religious laws and moral laws. but the US is not one of those places. morality itself is a subjective concept, it is not universal. since america is a mixing pot, the laws could not be moral laws, as too many people disagree on what is and is not morally acceptable. your book does not trump my opinions.
Exactly. Religious precepts such as thou shall not kill and thou shall not steal have no place in public policy. Or, perhaps, it's only the religious precepts that YOU don't like that have no place in public policy?
Don't you understand the difference? Thou shalt not kill and steal are both policies we have no problem issuing a penalty for.
If you out law abortion... What is the penalty? If someone kills someone, we put them in prison. If someone steals, we put them in prison. If someone performs or receives and abortion... Should they go to prison?
That is why making it illegal is ridiculous. Even the Bishop wont say that would be ok.
My basic point remains. People such as jln05f and Chris Matthews in this clip pretend to stand for the Church staying out of politics when they really mean staying out of politics only when they are on the "wrong" side of an issue. I'm sure Matthews had no problem with the Church when it condemned apartheid in South Africa.
As for for your point about the enforcement of prohibitions or restrictions on abortion, Boobalopbop, many, many prohibitions are difficult to enforce. It is very difficult, for example, to enforce laws against child abuse, and most of us don't want to see parents hauled off to jail or even lose their children for giving them a very occasional whack. However, that doesn't mean we legalize hitting children much less make it a "Constitutional Right".
This interview made me sick; Matthews is just another PHONEY catholic on his way to HELL;

How is this Matthews "pwnig" the bishop? All "tingles" did was keep yammering his mouth, and wouldn't let the bishop get a word in! Matthews is a tool.
Patrick Kennedy doesn't have to vote in defense of unborn human life to be member of Congress. But he does have to vote that way to be a member of the Catholic Church. Shame on him for forcing Bishop Thomas Tobin to publicly remind him of something even a child can understand. Bishop Tobin is not telling Cong. Kennedy to vote like a Catholic. He is basically telling him to stop pretending to be one.
Matthew would NEVER bully a homo priest the way he did to Bishop Thomas Tobin. Everyone knows it is cowardly, unbecoming and unprofessional to behave this way. Matthew deserves to be sent packing with racist Lou Dobbs. In America, no citizen is obliged to have religious or moral beliefs to serve in elected office. But elected officials claiming to have religious or moral beliefs, are obligated to act and vote consistent with their claimed beliefs to worthy of any credibility, trust, or respect.
No body likes abortion, but the right to chose is an important one, especially since most of the people that want to overturn Roe Vs. Wade are the same people that supported the massive killings in the Iraq war that killed mothers, fathers, and young children. These same people want to cut welfare for low income family's that have to many children, or those family's that can't afford abortions.
It's obvious here that the Bishop has no clear answer to what he would do if he were in congress.
When ex-president Kennedy gave his speech on Sept. 12, 1960 while in congress before his election, he did a brave thing for the rights of all woman.
The bishop had to have thought this out before and was in fear of giving a straight answer to what jail sentence woman should receive for receiving an abortion.
Matthew's didn't go into rape or incest, but above all, did give a good debate that will hopefully keep the Clergymen and religion out of law.
TubeManTalk. There are litterally tens of thousands of children adopted every year by those "right to lifers". So yes they will care for "it". As for you war comment, are you saying all right to lifers love war ? Turn down the hate man.
booger546: I adopted 3 times and i work in a kids rehab hospital. the majority of folks who adopt are NOT right to lifers. I am tired of seeing, shaken, hurt, raped kids of parents that feel an abortion would have been an immoral option compared to their heinous act.
This is about Kennedy being told by this Bishop that he should not be allowed to eat their "Jesus-meat cracker". This is where any sensible person will realize that the bishop & the church do not operate in reality. Kennedy should simply tell this fool to keep his cracker.
Religion is antithetical to a free society. Gods are imaginary dictators. Their "will" has no place in policy debate.
Abortion is a tough moral issue. WE have to wrestle with it, not our imaginary friends.
I believe in an America that is officially neither Catholic, Protestant nor Jewish; where no public official either requests or accepts instructions on public policy from the Pope, the National Council of Churches or any other ecclesiastical source; where no religious body seeks to impose its will directly or indirectly upon the general populace or the public acts of its officials; and where religious liberty is so indivisible that an act against one church is treated as an act against all."
- Tobin doesn't keep patience. He keeps quiet because he has NOTHING to say. No answers to Matthews questions, no arguments, nada.

Sure, Matthews doesn't want the Church to advise public officials on moral issues when he d-i-s-a-g-r-e-e-e-s with that advice. When he agrees with it, that's a different story. Does anyone really think that Matthews thinks that the Church should have stayed out of the struggle for Black civil rights in America or the movement against apartheid in South Africa?

You cannot have separation of Church and State if an elected officials 'first commitment' is to his faith as this clergy member demands. Anyone who cannot separate their religious beliefs and the edicts of their church from their duty to represent all the citizens should be barred from holding public office.

I can scarcely believe that we have fallen so far in only 50 years, so far that it seems almost unbelieveable that a speech like his was even possible.
I quite wish I had known of this speech long ago.

Brilliant approach by Matthews. It's about time someone revealed what shallow-minded-simpletons these religious kooks are.

You cannot have separation of Church and State if an elected officials 'first commitment' is to his faith as this clergy member demands. Anyone who cannot separate their religious beliefs and the edicts of their church from their duty to represent all the citizens should be barred from holding public office.
Good for you Chris, in setting him straight on his hypocritical stance on the abortion issue.
