that's why maybe Anna Netrebko smashed also the wine glass in her dvd :O...that came to my mind immediately sorry, nothing and no-one compares to Anna Moffo OF COURSE
I recently learned that Anna Moffo had a nose job prior to her success in the 60's. Not that it matters but I wonder how that affected her voice since sopranos use the nasal cavities to sing. She was a remarkable soprano and Violetta was her best role. To this date I can't think of a better Violetta than Anna Moffo (not even Callas)
What I would want to know is if she knew she would have that edge after the surgery, or went into it NOT knowing it would have an effect, but wanting the look that she chose rather than the one she was born to have. How much info do you have on that, and are you certain it's reliable?
I can guarantee that this is Moffo. She looks a bit older than she would have in 1960, though, so I'm wondering if the telecast was later than that. She remains for me the perfect Violetta, able to negotiate Sempre Libera, but also perfect in the extended duet with Germont, and heartbreaking in the last scene. Plus she was gorgeous. I've posted all of the Verdi Arias and French Heroines albums here.
Sorry for you,Beatsofsoultrain, but even if Callas remains the great soprano all the world knew, Anna Moffo was the best Violetta of all times. Moreover she was amazingly handsome. She was an uncomparable singing actress....Only divine!
Grand Dio! What a SPIRITED performance. Love the breaking of the wine glass. Granting it was a filmed studio performance with *maybe* the audio dubbed (not sure on that pls. correct me if I am wrong), but still, La Moffo's Violetta is CLASSIC and certainly for me, the BEST.
I think Anna Moffo's version of Sempre Libera is the best I've ever heard. Especially from recordings I've heard. Certainly there are others that do "A" jobs, but in my mind she's always done an "A+" Job of it...
I love her voice. this is for sure one of the best recordings I've ever heard of this aria (just as great as callas did in that great great performace at La Scala in1955 ) . ... but Moffo is special .. what a perfect final note. amazing to me ..that one really beats it all in my opinon .. thanks for posting !
OMG! She does remind me of Callas except with a different voice and softer (less-defined) facial expressions!! Can't be denied that Moffo is a great actress as well!
Amazing. Moffo was a one of the great Violetta's. But please can we have some of the interview from which this show was taken from. Such a tease to see Moffo at the end about to talk.
This extract is from a german TV show, called "Da capo" (1986-1998), in which August Everding interviewed some world-famous Opera like Birgit Nilsson, Elisabeth Schwarzkopf, Giuseppe di Stefano, Christa Ludwig, Nicolai Gedda, Ileana Cotrubas, Edda Moser, Helen Donath, Gwyneth Jones, Renata Scotto, Grace Bumbry, Teresa Berganza, Katia Ricciarelli, Margaret Price and many other. I hope that all the parts of this show will be some day released on DVD.
Pure voice ,excellent perfoming,Bravo Anna Moffo.

This sounds strangely unlike Anna Moffo's voice and more like Edda Moser. Why? Are we sure this is Moffo?
