Pufff!! This scene its self deserved the Oscar!! Its so powerful that the first time that i watched it i rewinded it agian. I love her dioluge here and loooove this movie!!!
Probably my favorite scene from any flick. Even though "Gone with the Wind" was second only to "Birth of a Nation" in its attempt to justify the Klan, it does capture the absolute tragedy of The War and its effects on all segments of Southern society. I am well acquainted with the desperate fighting spirit of Scarlett O'Hara.
Actually it's very difficult for a man to evaluate Vivien Leigh's performance in GWTW because she was so god damned beautiful it's distracting. When I read the book as a boy I didn' t thnk anyone could live up the image. Wrong. And how Olivia managed to dump herself down to play Melanie is remarkable. I own the movie and sometimes I put it on just to watch Hatti McDaniels match Oliver's best with her performance as Mammy. Apprently she and Gable became fast friends which is a nice thought.
once i read that vivien won the Oscar for this scene. The Academy voted her the best actress of 1939 just looking at this scene. maybe it,s true. But Vivien,s perfomance is PERFECT in every way!!. I also read..that Hattie Mc Daniel (best supporting actress) won the Oscar, that same year, for GWTW for the scene in the stairs, with melanie, after Bonnie,s death. Well, Hattie really deserves her Oscar. Her Mammy is just a GEM !!. Carlos
@gwtwcarlos Actually Hattie McDaniel has some of the best lines in this remarkable film and her overall performance is breathtaking, as is her acceptance speech at the Academy Awards ceremony.
@deriter64 ABSOLUTELY TRUE !!- I LOVE Hattie in every way- There,s something unique in her perfomance, and it has to be with her excelent relation with Vivien, during filming the movie- Both actresses love, each other, so much, that they walked the streets in Hollywood arm by arm- Vivien, till her death, every time that she talked about Hattie..says "DEAR Hattie"- You can see, in every scene together, how they glance to each other, like little girls- They complemented perfectly- to be continued
@gwtwcarlos Hi, thanks I never knew that. But I have read that Ms. McDaniels and Clarke Gable were fast friends for all their lives. Good to hear from another old time fan.
@deriter64 There,s so many things to tell about this two Ladies..that a brief comment is impossible- They both have talent, class, love for their profession, and...(as I am the biggest collector of GWTW in Latin america) I have read a great amount of articles about both Stars- Let,s only hear, as you said, how Hattie & Vivien accept their Oscars- Both were humble, sincere, beautiful persons. Vivien gave Hattie the biggest hug that night and even told Olivia: "don,t spoil this triumph to Hattie"
@deriter64 As Olivia was crying for loosing the Oscar- But let,s see another GEM of Hattie: "Alice Adams", 1935- She steals the movie !!- Well, dear friend, I have to admit that I LOVE Hattie- In my personal opinion..In GWTW there are 3 PERFECT characters: Scarlett first, Mammy second and Gerald third- The scenes between them are simply a delight to watch- And your commentary is PERFECT!!- Greetings, Carlos
Oh my god people need to clam down with how much they hate today's movies. Don't get me wrong I love this movie and I love most older movies than newer ones, but that doesn't mean today's movies are bad. Let's think here, the blindside, kings speech, slumdog mill. I like GWTW more than those 3 BUT IT DOESNT MAKE THEM BAD!!!
@moneybags1972 I don' hate movies of today. There are many movies that I really love. Let's take legally blonde for example, I like the characterization of elle woods-its really good. But again I don't like Evelyn salt of the movie Salt. But unfortunately people think that it is one of the best example of "strong women" which in my opinion is not.
THE DREAMS OF MR MULDOON is now out on AMAZON KINDLE @2.99.The publishers said this book would make a great film.If you like The Wizard of Oz you will love THE DREAMS OF MR MULDOON.Best wishes.
This is what is meant by a woman being strong and independent. It is the combination of femininity with immense mental strength and will power . Not like the 'strong women' what the Hollywood films are showing these days....
I was lucky enough to watch this on the big screen last night, with a dinner intermission! The movie is particularly spectacular and epic on the big screen! And Scarlett is a truly strong female character for cinema!!
@MrNh2009 I don't know if you were the first to put this scene in youtube, but i's owned by Warner Home Video. Anyway, uploading videos is to share them. Who cares if I have more viewer than you? Just enjoy the scene!!!
@CatPMI TO Replay About Your argement (I don't know if you were the first to put this scene in youtube) just watch the date of my upload and the date of yours to know.
@bullshtemail When we were little my sister would always tell me the very first sunset where Scarlet and her dad are looking at tara was the end and I thought she was serious. I always thought it was weird that the was the shortest movie ever.
it would have been funny if her first lines after the intermission were " boy am i hungry!"
