His last album had a great deal of coughing on it; he died within months.

This is written by Leadbelly, maybe the song that got him out of prison where he was because he had been framed for murder; the governor pardoned him. I found it in "Rise Up Singing," great fake book. If you want to hear Big Bill really kick ass and show off his chops check out, "Hey,Hey." Here he does a great job accompanying himself, a master.

if you listen to the last chorus Bill sings 'goodnight Cathreen' I've got a copy of his autobiography where he writes a short piece about his daughter Catherine 7 yrs old at the time. Very moving to think he might be saying goodbye to his daughter in this song! who knows?I love and play Bills music all the time.

@MrEddavenport You're right about his daughter; you can hear him choke up at the end of the song. I believe that's the reason he coughs at the beginning of the song; he knows what he is about to sing and how it will affect him.

After listening to this song it left me with a lump in my throat this farewell performance. he was obviously telling the audience his inner feelings that his end was near, despite that he gave a great performance one of his best may you rest in peace god bless you BIG BILL BROONZY
