i dont think even the army with all their flamethrowers and what-not would have been able to get rid of the invading alien lifeforms. The atmosphere of the alien planet obviously isnt very toxic to humans since they continued breathing it for some time, so the reverse can be said for the alien animals. maybe the army could have killed the larger ones, but the small spiders and the bacteria's and so forth would have integrated into the ecosystem.

Unfortunately the ending of the film can be interpreted as the heroes being punished by God. By that I mean for desenting and killing the evil lady (I forget her name) of whom claimed to be working for God. It sounds weird, I know, but if God was vengeful then perhaps he did punish our heroes with that terrible outcome, and leaving the dad, their leader, to suffer the most.

I do get that it could have been long enough to run out of gas and hearing the approaching creatures made them lose hope. Many people realy dislike the ending of the movie, they say if he waited a few minuets, hours, or a few days it would have been a happy outcome

The director did not have hours or days to extend the ending. In the directors eye, the guy may have waited for many hours/days. The film has to end due to time limits. So it ends so. Waiting days, surrounded by horrors unimaginable, he took the brave step to end the horror. Just tragic..no human error or blame. Seeing it this way will make more sense.?

i also love the scene at the end when he has counted the bullets and theyve decided to do it. they all just are quiet and you can see in their faces ( in my opinion) the exact thoughts that the characters are thinking. only a very brave director would have been brave enough to let so much of the last 5 minutes play out with so little dialogue.
