It's better to apply for the credit card and make them send you a card and then never use it. That'll keep their computers busy for a while. I have been juggling credit cards to justify keeping balances on many and it's hurting my FICO score. So, I'm cutting down to four. One Discover, one American Express, one VISA, and one MasterCard. I'm thinking the ConocoPhillips MasterCard as I'm a ConocoPhilips stockholder. If FICO says to cut down to three, out goes the VISA or Discover (reluctantly).

I'm with Shay. I'm still paying off 2000 of debt but they keep sending me credit card applications. It's so annoying to have to rip up credit card applications every day because those bloodsucking credit card companies can't take a hint.
i had to get a credit card to establish some credit through a credit union...it was my only option in the purchase of our new house...but the beauty of this card is that i can pay it right up the street after i use it...and i only use it for gas, i got fill up, then on my was home from filling up i stop by the credit union and pay the balance back using my debit card, so essentially i just added and extra step in using my debit card to establish credit...and i agree with the top rated comment.

I make a purchase knowing I could've paid in cash , then I use that cash to pay off the card within 2 weeks. Never earning interest. It's not for everyone but if you can manage to be on the ball you'll never pay a dime in interest but raise your credit score! But props to Shay for making his way work too!!

@SarNation Propose a better option outside of loans. I have plenty of scholarships and will still end up with a good amount of college loan debt. It's a choice I made to be able to study what I want to study. As a consequence, I work much harder than most college (Mommy and Daddy paid for me) students. I'll be more prepared to pursue my dreams and I'm sure I'll be quite fine financially. I invested in knowledge. A credit card is a different story. You are giving away money for nothing in return.

I love giving the credit cards magazine applications, other credit card applications... whatever junk mail I have sitting around. They only pay for the postage if it is used so if you recycle or shred it they don't pay. Give Visa an application for Mastercard or AmEx.... I do have a credit card but I treat it more like a debit. I pay it completely off every month and collect the bonus dollars they give me. :)

SHAY: I learned something about credit cards today and decided i'm getting one.
If go into this prepared and I'm smarter than the bank I'll get their money to work for me. I intend to use a credit card to buy textbooks etc...and allow my money to remain in my savings account and collect that 1%+ interest & then pay the card ON TIME thus bypassing the fees/ interest. Basically i use the banks credit to let my money collect interest.
I'm not afraid of Credit cards but I do respect them.
It doesn't even have to be for credit cards. I just sent one of these applications back to Globe Life Insurance because I get about 2 in the mail each week. I could just throw it away, but filling it out the Shay Carl way is more fun.
I also got my Dad in on this, and he's sending in his application to AARP. He refuses to let them control his fate if he's ever in a life & death situation, because they won't do much to save him. It's a shame Jeff Gordon carries them as his main sponsor :(
Credit cards can actually be extremely useful, that is if you understand how the creditors actually make money, and you pay your bills on time. That way you don't pay any interest, but have the ability to use someone elses money when your own is not available.

credit cards are actually good. if someone steals your credit card you aren't responsible for the charges. if someone steals your debit card it's really hard to get your money back and if you do it will take a long time. i'd rather use a credit card especially with all the new technology allowing credit/debit cards to be scanned and have your info copied without your knowledge.
@pinkshamrock18 actually with my debit card plan i wont be responsible for the charges either. Ive lost my card before, and with one call to my bank the card was cancelled and was of no further use within 10 minutes. A credit card has no actual money on it, a debit card does. You pay for a credit card with bills. With my debit card, i never get bills and i can never overdraw on my card. With credit cards you can spend as much as you want, but you have to pay it back later on.
@jaudue12 i know the difference between a credit & debit card. i was saying that if your debit card had been stolen & then used the money you lost would be hard to get back & would take a long time & while you wait you are screwed for any bills you need to pay, but with a credit card they reverse the charges right away & you won't have to pay for those charges. credit card stolen, you aren't out any money. debit card stolen, you are out for awhile & may or may not get the money back.
@jaudue12 and i'm talking about having your card stolen/lost and used before you call to cancel it since it obviously can't be used after you report it stolen or lost. your card doesn't have to be missing from your wallet to be used by someone else either.
Credit cards ARE bad....unless you use it sparingly. Always try to stick to a debit card unless it is an emergency. Being in debt is never a good feeling. If you use a credit card i.e. to order something online or to stay in a hotel, etc. then pay it off ASAP. This also helps improve your credit score. But waiting to paying it off can end badly.
For those coming after me, just think of life without credit cards for a few minutes... Just entertain the possibility without being negative about it. What would it look like? Hope you like the view! The mind is a wonderful thing! Ü
P.S. You CAN save up for a car, cash flow your education, and even buy your house WITHOUT credit! Enjoy those credit cards! ( ;

Basically i use the banks credit to let my money collect interest.
I'm not afraid of Credit cards but I do respect them.

It doesn't even have to be for credit cards. I just sent one of these applications back to Globe Life Insurance because I get about 2 in the mail each week. I could just throw it away, but filling it out the Shay Carl way is more fun.
I also got my Dad in on this, and he's sending in his application to AARP. He refuses to let them control his fate if he's ever in a life & death situation, because they won't do much to save him. It's a shame Jeff Gordon carries them as his main sponsor :(

Credit cards can actually be extremely useful, that is if you understand how the creditors actually make money, and you pay your bills on time. That way you don't pay any interest, but have the ability to use someone elses money when your own is not available.

credit cards are actually good. if someone steals your credit card you aren't responsible for the charges. if someone steals your debit card it's really hard to get your money back and if you do it will take a long time. i'd rather use a credit card especially with all the new technology allowing credit/debit cards to be scanned and have your info copied without your knowledge.

@pinkshamrock18 actually with my debit card plan i wont be responsible for the charges either. Ive lost my card before, and with one call to my bank the card was cancelled and was of no further use within 10 minutes. A credit card has no actual money on it, a debit card does. You pay for a credit card with bills. With my debit card, i never get bills and i can never overdraw on my card. With credit cards you can spend as much as you want, but you have to pay it back later on.

@jaudue12 i know the difference between a credit & debit card. i was saying that if your debit card had been stolen & then used the money you lost would be hard to get back & would take a long time & while you wait you are screwed for any bills you need to pay, but with a credit card they reverse the charges right away & you won't have to pay for those charges. credit card stolen, you aren't out any money. debit card stolen, you are out for awhile & may or may not get the money back.

@jaudue12 and i'm talking about having your card stolen/lost and used before you call to cancel it since it obviously can't be used after you report it stolen or lost. your card doesn't have to be missing from your wallet to be used by someone else either.

Credit cards ARE bad....unless you use it sparingly. Always try to stick to a debit card unless it is an emergency. Being in debt is never a good feeling. If you use a credit card i.e. to order something online or to stay in a hotel, etc. then pay it off ASAP. This also helps improve your credit score. But waiting to paying it off can end badly.
