Same happened to me. It was near my spawn to. God the defualt texture pack looked like shit back then.

I promis, once i respawned and there was a spawner NEXT TO ME, i heard zombies, freaked out, no weopons, nno nothing... the sun saved me :D

@charlottknutsson well personally i think dungeons are supposed to be ancient and far or close to the ground. and buried.
