Only reason that Corolla hauled ass is because Toyota had hired Yamaha to design the high-revving 2zz. The only engine in Toyota history that is capable of competing with Honda's "VTEC" because it had a similar way of achieving high lift after certain RPMs mated to a 6spd transmission.
Its a shame they Toyota discontinued it and began using that 2.4L from the Camry in everything (TC, Camry, Corolla XRS).
You can thank the obese American Consumers for this one.
Back in the day the 4A-GE 20v was a competitor to VTEC engines, and it did a great job too, The 2zz is not Toyota's only high-revving 4 banger you know?

Corolla XRS was advertised to have 164 hp at the crank but when you dyno it stock it will give you 150-155 whp. Some abnormal XRS are getting as high as 163 whp. Toyota lied again by telling that torque peak @ 125TQ at 4400 RPM to fool people that it is more street drivable. Peak torque actually peaks at 6800RPM just like Lotus or Celica GT-S.
Intake alone gives as high as 16whp, add exhaust and you'll see your numbers at 170whp range. I have a video pls search.
Now add a PPE race header and a Standalone ECU (PFC or HYDRA) and upgrade your intake to 3" diameter then you are about to see ~190 whp (translates to 220~225 hp at the crank).
Now if you are wise enough, you can calculate the POWER to WEIGHT ratio with all the given numbers.

Because they don't want the XRS to compete with the Scion which was new that time and the outgoing Celica GT-S. And to introduce this Corolla as more street drivable just like other corollas.
It gained that much hp by just the intake alone because Toyota choked the stock XRS. Toyota used the Intake system of the 1zz-fe engine (regular corollas) that only rev up to 6200rpm as opposed to the XRS 8300rpm.
If you could show me dyno sheets of a corolla xrs pre intake/after intake I'd be more then happy to believe what you are saying but other wise I find it very hard to believe no matter how choked the corolla intake might be it would not pick up 16 whp that's a insane amount of power to pick up from a intake.
Lastly any one who knows ANYTHING about intakes/Exhausts on N/A cars you barely pick up anything typical cold air intake your looking at 3whp max. Congrats...Lastly while the xrs might be like 200 lbs lighter with a intake/exhaust/over the counter tune it will not pick up the power to fill in the HUGE gap between power that the s2000 puts down to the ground.

XRS stock are ~155 whp. With IHE it's ~170 whp. Add a standalone ECU ~180+ whp.. but with 3" PPE intake instead of the small injen Intake it's ~190 whp.
Stock S2000 AP1 are no more higher than 190 whp and they are more heavier than the XRS.

Toyota lied!
Corolla XRS was advertised to have 164 hp at the crank but when you dyno it stock it will give you 150-155 whp. Some abnormal XRS are getting as high as 163 whp. Toyota lied again by telling that torque peak @ 125TQ at 4400 RPM to fool people that it is more street drivable. Peak torque actually peaks at 6800RPM just like Lotus or Celica GT-S.
Intake alone gives as high as 16whp, add exhaust and you'll see your numbers at 170whp range. I have a video pls search.

Now add a PPE race header and a Standalone ECU (PFC or HYDRA) and upgrade your intake to 3" diameter then you are about to see ~190 whp (translates to 220~225 hp at the crank).
Now if you are wise enough, you can calculate the POWER to WEIGHT ratio with all the given numbers.

Scion TC, Celica GT-S and Corolla XRS co-existed in 2005.
As the last year of the Celica was ending Toyota was promoting Scion TC as for the younger market not the XRS.
The XRS was made so they could use up all the 2zz remaining in their storage houses.. LOL..
The Corolla XRS was never promoted nor advertised by Toyota. Show me a TV commercial of it if it was promoted.

Because they don't want the XRS to compete with the Scion which was new that time and the outgoing Celica GT-S. And to introduce this Corolla as more street drivable just like other corollas.
It gained that much hp by just the intake alone because Toyota choked the stock XRS. Toyota used the Intake system of the 1zz-fe engine (regular corollas) that only rev up to 6200rpm as opposed to the XRS 8300rpm.

If you could show me dyno sheets of a corolla xrs pre intake/after intake I'd be more then happy to believe what you are saying but other wise I find it very hard to believe no matter how choked the corolla intake might be it would not pick up 16 whp that's a insane amount of power to pick up from a intake.

Lastly any one who knows ANYTHING about intakes/Exhausts on N/A cars you barely pick up anything typical cold air intake your looking at 3whp max. Congrats...Lastly while the xrs might be like 200 lbs lighter with a intake/exhaust/over the counter tune it will not pick up the power to fill in the HUGE gap between power that the s2000 puts down to the ground.

It doesn't mean your engine can't do those incredible numbers then all other engine can't do the same.

On the other hand, the S2k which is designed as a sports car should not be as fast as the corolla in straight line. They should have made the s2k to exceed all expectations not just exceed the price expectation.

Awesome vid! I just raced one of my good friends, he also has the xrs with I believe injen cai.
I have a stock 05 s2000. We start in 2nd gear and I pull right away since I stay in vtec and he was slightly out of cvts (however u call it)
We started at 60 when were both in power band and its slightly better for him but i still pull ahead 3-4 cars by end of 4th.
I love the xrs tho for a DD

XRS stock are ~155 whp. With IHE it's ~170 whp. Add a standalone ECU ~180+ whp.. but with 3" PPE intake instead of the small injen Intake it's ~190 whp.
Stock S2000 AP1 are no more higher than 190 whp and they are more heavier than the XRS.
So what do you think? There are more s2000 vs XRS vids... I'm not the only one posting XRS vids, feel free to browse youtube.

An xrs will eat a GS-R anyday ive seen it before but the b series has a better engine which is the b18c5 found on the integra type r..type r's come with 190hp and are lighter than the rolla..so honda did not necesarrily make the k20 to keep up with toyota

This XRS runs Low 14's ~100 mph. Never heard of an S2000 AP1 do that. It's not the driver, it's the car.. Calculate the power to weight ratio and you'll see the XRS is better.
