you make a good point, a normal bass solo would sound more flavorful if started in the middle/bottom, then gained range and variety. In my opinion, since he playing a 6 string he is trying to depict this as a lead part, not the standard bass solo. Plus there is a low part in the background.

I think thats still a little harsh yet, in fact i think his style pays more homage to the frenzied rythmically complicated jazz that is so unappreciated. Changes are important but stylistically its the rythm that counts in his compositions.

The sounds are too muddled together. If you have a deep and well defined bass line separate from the rest of the mix, and if you have high and bright chords also clearly separate from the mix, and if your melody is of a different timbre and sound than the rest of the mix, you've got something good.

sweet solo but it would fit better over jazz or straight blues whereas the backing chords sound more funky. Dominant 7ths are best as the chords for both blues and funk but it's all about how you play them.
