Great playing . May I ask you do you know the song by Sonny Terry called spread this news around . For years now I have been trying to work the harp rythum out .
adam, there's a problem with my marine band special 20 C key Harmonica at the 2nd draw, it's like no sound but with a weird sound like a cow and feel like something it's stuck inside, so what should i do?
It's not the harp, it's you, friend. 2 hole draw is #*$&ing tricky to pick up at first, a lot of people (me included, at one point) think it's their harp that's broken. (I actually went out and bought a new one because I was convinced it was the harp and not me.) Search some of the older posts (try .002) that Adam has and you should find some help on it. On that note (no pun intended) THANK YOU ADAM for WHAT YOU DO!!! I'd have given up on the harp a long time ago if not for you...
I get way more volume and tone from single note tongue blocking. It just feels more natural to me than pursing. Can bend some too. I have no phrasing, I dont know what to do.
Hi Adam. Can u do some riffs using overblows? i have pulled a couple out of your videos and used them for practice, esp some of yr first pos lessons u did about 9 months ago. thx dude
May be your best lesson yet. Really enjoyed meeting you in Clarksdale--realized that I am not ready for overblows, but thanks for trying. Just wanted to remind everyone that you will be in Greenwood, SC in July 2008 and I will be there to see you with Mr Satan! Everyone checkout Adam's lesson 120 for a look at Clarksdale and hey that is really me at the very end sneaking into the frame with a video camera as I film Cool Larry the other guy on stage with Pete from LA.
I love your tutorials! Heck, I changed my mind about learning harp for now, & decided to learn slide guitar instead. But your videos are so good I subscribed anyway. I'd rather watch you than TV any day! You are truly gifted & I mean as a teacher (as a harpist too, of course). The depth to which you analyze every nuance of your playing & the painstaking way you demonstrate every detail from every possible angle, most music teachers can't do in 30 minutes what you do in a 10 minute video. -Greg
Well, I'm driving up to Chicago in late May and could do a clinic and/or sit in with a band on Wednesday the 21st or Monday the 26th. If you've got some pull w/local players (such as the harmonica club), please contact me.
Great lesson Adam, once again this series is right in step with my journey! I'm working with Robert Johnson's "If I had Posession Over Judgement Day"...all techniques freely work together. Damn I love this!!!
Good lesson! Great subject! I'm pretty much a lip purser and became inspired to tongue block more by your lead. BTW...that riff using the 4-6 holes on Lee Sankey's "Monkey Lips" sets the bar pretty high for technique.
For zyxel2 : I pretty sure he does both even if I think he tries to avoid it as much as possible (beginning of whammer jammer for example hole 2 and 3). But anyway it is really usefull I think to know how to use tongue blocking for single note because I think you gain in precision and maybe a little bit in speed as well. Adam will correct me if any mistakes about what I said.
you're right Adam, tongue blocking is so important. And just like you, too many driver pushed me into it. I don't think you can master harmonica without mastering tongue blocking ( And even knowing how to do it, you never master the intrument, he's too small (the harp)). Anyway good lesson because really important on the path to become a top harp player.
Wow! Great lesson! Guess what I'll be working on today? I love these type lessons: it really is the "Secrets" of harmonica...REVEALED! I nice refresher on basics, too. And, more proof that playing (and teaching) harp is not an *exact* science.
Great lessons thanks - regards Rob Portsmouth England

An alternate use of this riff is Sonnyboy II, "Too Close Together" slightly different, key of F on Bb harp, second position.

hey adam...when you play tongue blocked. do you use it only on octaves, or do you do it on single holes.
i tongue block only on octaves for now...single hole sounds messy from my harp when tongue blocked
zyxel2 3 years ago
I do both, but I don't always tongue block when I'm playing single holes. I don't tongue block when I'm bending or overblowing.
