Very briefly, what does this device really do? What purpose does it serve? Perhaps I have it right already, does it just allow for the radio to be controlled via the iPod? Thanks, im an electronics moron.

Essentially, yes and no. It transmits the sound to your stereo. So the music you play from your ipod plays through the car stereo. But you can't control the stereo in the sense of turning on the cd player or changing am/fm stations.
