Booker T & MGs guitarist Steve Cropper says he was scrounging for material for Otis when he decided to arrange this song for him. Otis returned to STAX from an afternoon physician appointment and read the lyrics through a few times before recording it WITHOUT EVER HEARING THE ORIGINAL!
I used to think this was the best version, but The Stones wrote it and this awesome song would not have existed without Keith. They're both equally timeless classics and I like the direction Otis took it in and Keith does too.
@dodg3rs21 I wish Jay-Z and Kanye West didn't sample him for their song so only true fans would listen to classics like this. Kids these days ruin everything...
reading keith richards autobiography, he says that they (rolling stones) liked the song more after otis covered it, so pretty sure they were happy to have him (and aretha franklin) singing it. as someone else said they started off as a covers band themselves...
I don't think at that time Otis Redding, The Rolling Stones, etc. did care about staling or not someone's song. It just about expressing feelings in a different way.Redding's version is much more soul-like, as Black musicians do so good, whereas the RS version is more rock'n'rolling. It's like Mercy, Mercy : when Jimi plays it on the guitar it sounds very soully compared to Keith's version.
There's no point in blaming one for stealing it, it's just different and they're all good :)
Otis didn't steal a damn thing. You want to talk about stealing, how about all those pop and rock n' roll artists who stole from black artists without crediting them.
He didnt steal shit! He took the thunder from the Stones and her performed it until he died. The Stones covered so many Muddy Waters song (dig their name), I am sure they were happy a idol like Otis did their song.
j'ai écouté otis la première fois ,j'avais 13ans ,j'en ai aujourd'hui 62 et je l'aime toujours autant! la zik que l'on peut écouter toute la journée sans etre lasser!!!!!!
This man had too much damn soul!!!

Keith said that he intended the riff of the original to be a trumper, like it was done here.
