Even better than this is Parkinson vs. Meg Ryan after "In the Cut". In that one Parkinson was not only grossly sexist but also showed himself to be a bit of a fossil, and actually a bit dim.

She was going to let him know it. She is 30 here however (she always looks younger) and in time she has adapted a little better to the interview process. Parky is either smitten with her or he just thinks she is being a smartarse, it's probably a bit of both. Later interviews reveal a more charming character.

The interview questions are a bit lame and Parkinson doesn't come across very well but you have to bear in mind that this was a long time ago - I'm NOT justifying it it in any way, but sexism was less abhorrent to the vast majority of people then... I doubt many thought Parkinson stepped out of line at the time of its original broadcast. You've also got to remember that Parkinson isn't necessarily airing his own opinions (although it seems he is),but those of critics etc...

I used to stage manage in the studio in front of him, there were always female celebs in the hall being 'counciled' by the pr people - he got very odd with women he took a dislike to. This means she set the flow of conversation based around this but if she had not then the whole theme would have been completely different!

To be honest I can only detect an occasional awkwardness in this interview, and, on the whole, it seems to stem from Mirren's gently contrary avoidance of perfectly reasonable questions, and her absent-mindedly, mischievious flirting.
