It is understanding the text here. One cannot have humility and confidence in oneself unless they place themselves with all trust in God's hands. I love the homilies by St Gregory 4th century on the Beatitudes. Being confident in Christ is not the same confidence in oneself. Here in this reading the many mistakes are mentioned that people make, this is what is being spoken of here. You speak correctly that one cannot attain by ones own self, but trusting in Christ
I would say it takes God's initiative to be in the grace of God.
I also think the whole dark night of the soul could be summed up into: Love God with all your heart such that you would do anything anything at all for God. That is to literally fall in love with God like no other.
But again this is also impossible without God giving the love. Man can hardly love his neighbor so it would be impossible to love God without God's own initiative of giving him that love. This love bears all.
This is the meaning of the beatitude 'Blessed are those who are poor in spirit'. And, it seems to me that the love you speak of, rightfully stating is itself impossible without God's grace, you have within you. You are indeed blessed.
Humility is impossible without genuine low self esteem.
Those who say be humble but confident don't know what they are talking about.
To put oneself below everyone else as Christ told is to genuinely regard oneself low with genuine low self esteem thus practices genuine humility.
Being confident is being satisfied which means having pride. Humility can't go hand to hand with personal confidence.

Actually I'm just a sinner and this doesn't stem from humility but from reality.
