By his own account, Lennon never got over his mother's death and he was driven to great success in life by that tragic event. This song can make a grown man cry.
@bailinnumberguy Yeah, I always felt so bad for him too. HIs dad left when he was a baby and then his mom couldnt take care , so she handed John Over to his aunt. iknow almost exactly how it feel as a 15 year old girl, . My dad Left when i was a baby and I was raised in house with my grandmother and my mom( who was and still somewhat is abusive toward me) My grandma basically was my mother and when she died when i was 12, it was so hard I was forced to grow up fully right then.
Can't help but love yer John. But why oh why did you give your son Julian the same pain that you express here. Touches me deep this song as I also experienced parental loss and let down..
With all due respect to the person who uploaded this video, this is not the most inspiring version of this song. And I love John Lennon, so no insult intended there, either.
@chrisnaish Ah, if only. His first son, Julian, was not even included in John's will when he died. Asserting that he learned from his past blunders is a rather difficult position to take, but feel free. His parenting towards Julian was the best when he was separated from Yoko and with May Pang. Yoko's behavior towards Julian was absolutely hurrendous and she even went as far as charging Julian for letters that John had written to him (after his death). I love John's music, but come on...
I guess history repeated itself and John couldn't help being like his father in the way they both treated their first sons...at least he learnt his lesson when it came to Sean
@Number9OutsideTime He say's this is about 99% of all parents, and if you think he wasn't also singing it about his own parenting than you're not the Lennon fan you claim, hombre.
You don't hate Mark Chapman or want to kill him. That's a complete contradiction to Lennon's beliefs if you consider yourself a fan and love him. ...you only hate what he did.
Well John it's been 31 years since you've died it was a tragic day in music and a tragic day in everyone's life, we love and miss you John nobody will ever be able to replace you and make us feel the way you made us feel, you encouraged me to play guitar and change my life forever and though I've never met you and I was not alive when you were you're like a father that taught me everything but was never there. Love you John Lennon Rip 10/9/1940-12/8/1980.
John Lennon, you are the coolest person who ever walked the planet. You changed my life, listening to the white album the frist time was unbeliveable, mindblowing. Give Peace A Chance. Thanks for the wonderful, music, poems, pantings, and for changing my life.
RIP John Lennon. October 9 1940 - December 8 1980
Funny how one of the top rated comments on a John Lennon video happens to be about killing someone. It doesn't even matter if its the guy who killed Lennon...its not right. Peace is the answer, and there is no peace in killing...so killing is not part of the solution. Most people like John Lennon just because everyone else does and they think itll make others think they know music since its a well know fact that Johns an incredible person. But they dont even understand him. They just hear him.
@wiggs227 That's exactly what I said man, it's almost like they've never heard Give Peace A Chance or Imagine It's kinda dumb that everyone lacks a though of common sense. But hey I still wish them the best of lives.
@wiggs227 Well said. If I could go back I would tell Mark Chapman that he did a horrible act but there is always peace. I know what he did was wrong, but if you want follow John. You have to live in his shadow.
This song pretty much describes myself. I've never known my real mother, or father and I'm afraid I'll never will. Thank you John Lennon for making wonderful music.
He didn't even meet his mother until he was 17, they were actually bonding then she was run over by a drunk off duty police officer. He never met with his father either he lived with his aunt mimi.
@CliffBurtonRip92786 you got that totally wrong. john knew his mother right up until the time she died. he also knew his father, but when aged around 4 whilst in blackpool john had to choose between his mother or his mother. he chose his mother and john didnt see see his father again until john became famous. johns aunt mimi took care of john for many years, but john always remained close to his mother.
@rareu4532 Do u really think that is what John would have wanted. He died a Martyr! After all of his work done in regards to PEACE was not wasted on me :)
@rareu4532 I wouldn't, why you may ask, because that goes against everything John Lennon was for John was for peace not murder. No matter how much I do not like Mark David Chapman I would not kill him just for that reason, it would be going against everything John was for so no it is not the right thing to kill in the name of a peaceful man John Winston Oko Lennon
@MAGICO240 I think his live voice wasn't too bad. Ok the odd hiccup. I think he had good vocal technique though. His Adam's apple didn't rise when he seemed like he had cracked. that's not easy. Plus you can hear emotion in his voice.
Mother, you had me, but I never had you I wanted you, you didn't want me So I, I just got to tell you Goodbye, goodbye Father, you left me, but I never left you I needed you, you didn't need me So I, I just got to tell you Goodbye, goodbye Children, don't do what I have done I couldn't walk and I tried to run So I, I just got to tell you Goodbye, goodbye Mama don't go Daddy come home
I was at this show in 1972 and this soulful version of Mother was incredible. Was so good seeing Lennon, knowing he was a fellow new yorker who cared about real stuff. He would have had so much to say today about the greed and dumb down idiocratic culture of today. Going to visit Strawberry Fields tomorrow on what would've been his 71st birthday. Bring guitar, smoke a joint
Imagine all the people, living for today, living life in peace, sharing all the world. Imagine a world united in reason and truth, with no war, no poverty, no deception, no division. This is great art, that we humans have to praise our ears and souls of presence in our short life to have the opportunity to experience ,We are allowed to share his pain of being abandoned in this melancholy masterpiece. There, his voice sounds like a little child who cries out for hope. And im sure his prayer of hope and longing for parents who love their children unconditionally have been covered in the heavens. Or sky.. with diamonds for the stunning Lucy:)

@delight1027 haha John Lennon chewed gum a lot:) idk why probably because he was trying to quit smokeing, just liked gum or bad breath maybe? idk i love lennon:)
This song made me breack down in tears........ My mother had me... but i never had her... Mama dont go..!!!!!!! Daddy Come Home...!!!!!!!! I feel what he felt... this song is the best song ever.
such honesty....... such rawness.... beautiful song.......... never met him... but met people like john in all walks of life.... that was his appeal......... honesty, humour, human failings, kindness, courage, takes real courage to open up like this for a working class northern bloke, or any bloke wherever your from......... thankyou. x
On October 9th we will all watch "Imagine" in honor of the greatest singer ever's birthday. Let's give him the best birthday present ever: the highest viewed video on YouTube!! Let's give him what he deserves and what Justin Bieber does not deserve to have!
Copy and paste to all John lennon/beatles videos and all music videos let's get this noticed quickly!
i came across this in a link listening to floyd and although i love the beatles as well i've never heard it. its just beautiful, speaks me on levels. thumbs up 2011!
I can't help it. Every single time they put a link to something beatles/john lennon related on twitter, I have to know what is it all about. I love This Video, thanks for uploading.
@FENWAY14 Actually if John had both his parents and a "normal" (both parents there) upbringing we wouldnt have the John Lennon the world knows and loves today, he would be a totally different human being. So be thankful his dad left and his mom died when he was 17.
john is not dead, he is alive through those who he has affected and those who cary on his message will keep him alive therefore i believe he will live forever through all of us. dear fiends lets preach peace!
john lennon bob marley and micheal jackson are my favorite artists,,because all all they wanted was peace love and happiness,,despite all of the rumors about them,,I FUCKING LOVE THEM!!!
This has to be one of the most raw and powerful songs I have ever, in my life so far, have encountered. John Lennon's personal life reflects into this song, transmitting a pain so deep, that we can only feel a fraction of it.
"I was visiting john when I was in New York, and he kept saying 'mother isn't here', or 'mother said this this or that...' and I realized he was talking about Yoko. He referred to Yoko as mother". - Paul McCartney
Goodbye John :(. We still miss you and always will even though you will live forever in the hearts of many and as you say 'I don't fear death because i don't believe in it, it's just getting out of one car and into another' :). See you in another world John.
I'm not listening to John Lennon in 2011 or any other year because i will always listen to John Lennon regardless of what year it is. Years are just numbers so by saying your listening to John Lennon in 2011 or any other year doesn't mean anything :).
July 15, 1958: 17 year-old John Lennon's mother Julia is killed by a drunk driver. John and his mother had recently been reunited, many years after Julia had abandoned her son and left him to be raised by his Aunt Mimi. John would later state that he had effectively lost his mother twice. ☺
@kimlovesthebeatles do you know who Gandhi was? In india he's called the father of nation , but it's a well known fact that he was not really a great father to his own sons, same goes for albert einstein and many other great persoanlities.
Sometimes you gotta give up on a few things in life for a greater purpose.
John Lennon kinda screwed up with Julian, cause he did to him the same thing his dad made to him (the pattern repeats itself). So in that sense he was a hypocrite. Also I really hate Yoko for selling pieces of John to Julian instead of giving it for free.
Hi all I was wondering if you knew that all people are different - not only their fingerprints and DNA - but also their thougths. No one can go into other peoples mind and tell what to do or say. We are born with the biggest uncontrolled computer power in our heads with so many directions to go so it is impossible to judge others for their actions. Use John,s example and lets us just IMAGINE - there are spae for us all.
I know John wrote this song about his parents and kids who had problem with their parents also....but to me he wrote this about everyone parents. Such a beautiful song.
hate yoko for what exactly??? john lennon fell in love again....thats life. The woman get a rough deal for being the "other" woman who did nothing wromg but to love a man...
one thing is for sure its one of the most soulhitting songs he ever made and for that jonny boy i solute you because to sing from the deepist part of the heart takes some balls,,,,,,,,respecting your logic and always have
he litterally starts crying and you feel the emotion flowing through him. nobody can have that much emotion, energy, and chakra flowing out of them and still keep the song together. it makes you feel bad for him you know I grew up without a father I know how he feels
One of all time fave songs by Lennon......this man was such an interesting guy and a fantastic artist.....shame how he left us. Mark Chapman deserves to rot in hell for what he did.
check out my cover,i would appreciate it... =)

Parents..listen up...be there for your kids
FENWAY14 5 months ago
@FENWAY14 Actually if John had both his parents and a "normal" (both parents there) upbringing we wouldnt have the John Lennon the world knows and loves today, he would be a totally different human being. So be thankful his dad left and his mom died when he was 17.

i got pain from him.
Laboulay 5 months ago
This has to be one of the most raw and powerful songs I have ever, in my life so far, have encountered. John Lennon's personal life reflects into this song, transmitting a pain so deep, that we can only feel a fraction of it.

I've always loved watching John. He's one helluva performer.
diewasseratte 5 months ago
The tune he gave to this live version is much more painful than the original.

he looked like he wanted to cry.

"I was visiting john when I was in New York, and he kept saying 'mother isn't here', or 'mother said this this or that...' and I realized he was talking about Yoko. He referred to Yoko as mother". - Paul McCartney

I love the way the video conveniently cuts off just before Yoko is about to start 'Singing' :).

Goodbye John :(. We still miss you and always will even though you will live forever in the hearts of many and as you say 'I don't fear death because i don't believe in it, it's just getting out of one car and into another' :). See you in another world John.
samusic160 6 months ago 2
I'm not listening to John Lennon in 2011 or any other year because i will always listen to John Lennon regardless of what year it is. Years are just numbers so by saying your listening to John Lennon in 2011 or any other year doesn't mean anything :).
samusic160 6 months ago
what does he means by
"children dont do what i have done
i couldnt walk and i tried to run"??????????????????????

A sad story, but worth sharing....

Also I really hate Yoko for selling pieces of John to Julian instead of giving it for free.
fofobot 6 months ago 2
@fofobot John admitted that he screwed up with Julian, but they were getting real close before John's death.

Use John,s example and lets us just IMAGINE - there are spae for us all.

one thing is for sure its one of the most soulhitting songs he ever made and for that jonny boy i solute you because to sing from the deepist part of the heart takes some balls,,,,,,,,respecting your logic and always have
respectthelogic 7 months ago
he litterally starts crying and you feel the emotion flowing through him. nobody can have that much emotion, energy, and chakra flowing out of them and still keep the song together. it makes you feel bad for him you know I grew up without a father I know how he feels
