And then there was an angel, who spoke of many things. Dreams and stories that would be true, and were real, his name was unknown to many, but known to the devoted few. And when he was gone, they carried on, listening to his words of wisdom, hoping one day, he would appear. If there is a god, and he is yours. Ask him or her, to grant us one wish. Bring John back, for one more gig.
There's Gilmour, clean-shaven, posh-public-school-boy-not-quite-grown-up hair, million dollar suit freshly laundered... Then there's Our John, as wonderful and musical as ever but god you can see almost visible stink lines.

I first heard this song from the album of the same name 30 plus years ago and it stuck in me and still is there today. Seeing this version for the first time....an absolute masterpiece and testimony to John's incredible talents. He left the world so much beautiful music.
@Django5198 In 2003 I believe it was removed due to a cyst or something - actually there is a documentary which follows John in the period where he is about to his leg amputated.
i watched john open for eric clapton in 78, far as i'm concerned he blew clapton away, i am ashamed of my town because they tried to boo him offstage. he was really good and clapton was really plain.
blues/jazz/psychodelic/trance dream ---- just discovered John Martyn today--thank you Youtube-what a privilege to have this tool available to musiclovers--I am grateful to be living in the present age.
@LDP060681 I don't need the internet to be a musiclover-I just said it is a tool, just as the friggin radio, record player,CD player,MP3 player, TV etc. are tools with which to become aware of music that I haven't just stumbled upon wandering about the globe in order to hear all these wonderful musicians with my own two ears in person. What is the point of being a music lover ?? Please enlighten me !
Hey guys. There is a legacy that John left. He inspired a guy called Dan Arborise. Check him out. "Cries" and "Days even years from now" from the album "Of Tide and Trail" are worth a listen. All was not in vain.
His song. "One world" is the best song of all time. I really miss you John. At least we have his albums and the youtube videos to go back to. Still miss you though.
I remember John handing out his spliff to the audience in the Victoria Halls in Hanley Stoke on Trent for a quick couple of puffs and then he took it back. Early '80's, wonderful memories.
I remember watching this on 'The Apprentice' VHS video. I had the pleasure of seeing John Martyn at Ritzy's nightclub in Aberdeen with keyboard player + drum machine in 1989. It was a tiny place. I also saw JM in Cambridge at The Junction when it was a beer stained gig venue. He had the full band, including saprano sax player and real drummer! That was a terrific gig. He was so into it playing Angeline that he could hardly speak. Such an emotional performer! I remember the 'Poland' keyboard!
I've been very lucky and see john @ a small gig in Greenwich south London...was at the front with friends getting stoned on very good green...john said am liking the smell guys...he then went on to do a great performance with Danny thompson...A TRUE GENT AND PERFORMER...truly missed.....his up doing the big gig in the sky Now.
Had the priviledge to be at these Shaw Theatre gigs and was worried that Mr Gilmore would fill in all the space. It was an excellent collaboration and could not have been easy finding notes to play on standard tuned guitar when John was in CFCCGD and still keep the vibe.
I was Fortunate to see him in the 70s & the 80s Wow thank you John Martyn you puzzled me as a guitarist in waiting .I just learned spencer the rover 25 yrs on. someone said you are the worlds best kept secret.yeah thanks.Genius
One of my top JM favourite songs, and this may just be my favourite rendition ever; Im listening as I write. Absolutely beautiful. To me, music doesnt come any better than this-and a masterclass in guitar from two exponents who utilise the electric guitar to create atmosphere. In that respect, their approach to the guitar is similar (as Gilmour hinted in the pre TV interview). Im glad Gilmour is still around. There was only one John Martyn and he will not be replaced. This is a genuine classic.
John was made of music, he couldn't have done anything other than make this stuff. that's my definition of genius...
Some memories are special and make you smile, the memories of seeing him live do that to me...the best times

Of, course, he's no John Mayer. (Sarcasm well-intended)
