  • 6:27 - 7:04 is what nerds do on Valentines day because they're single. I would know. :P

  • as soon as i saw the themas i thought hes gonna shatter a frozen rose

  • thumbs up for After Eight :D

  • Haha, I love how even in his wedding photo, he has the big fro and the exact same facial expression he has now. I wonder if he was just born that way.

  • damn, the prof. got married young, lol XD i wonder how old they were

and i think, to me, i dnt smell the roses, i just like what they look like XD

  • Professor... can you tell us how they get the caramel in the Caramilk?

  • @danxl5 they make the top half of chocolate and then cool it, then pour in the molten caramel. Then they freeze it and add the Last layer of chocolate, Cool it, and then trim it

  • Damnit he's married. D:

  • I found it really funny that he put the flowers in chemical flasks :p

  • hes got a bad ass tie.. i want that tie

    i also want chocolate

  • GREAT SCOTT MARTY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I love this guy. He rocks his 'fro SO well!

  • it's because he's consumed massive amounts of Fronanium

  • I think his hear is cool for a guy of that age jaja

  • WTF is going on his hear???

  • gosh professor, you are such a heart breaker. lol =P

  • Anything dipped it liquid nitrogen turns out awesome, and they have genetically engineered blue roses, I've seen them.

  • 1:30

  • lady get a perm.

  • You should be able to extract the rose color (which should be relatively water soluble) and change the color from red to blue by changing the pH of the solution.

I've done it with raspberry juice though I haven't tried it with roses.

  • That's interesting. Thanks for the information. I'll experiment this coming Spring.

  • I'm pretty sure the red rose color is due to anthocyanins. The colors are sensitive to pH and change color based on the pH of the vacuole of the cells. So the problem isn't the pigment itself but the pH of the vacuole. (which is much harder to change through genetic engineering) You can tell this if you look up the recent "blue roses" made by Florigene through genetic engineering which aren't really any bluer than ones made by traditional breeding.

  • It showed you his wedding at the start of the vid mate.

  • I know but he not wearing a ring anymore. Maybe I am wrong and he just took it off for working in the lab, but he's in his office and I'd expect it would still be on.

  • What do you mean he's not married? The video showed a picture of him getting married.....

  • He is not wearing a ring anymore...?

  • It's because Mercury forms amalgam with gold and the ring won't look nice anymore.

He says it in the mercury video.

  • A lot of chemists that work with Mercury do not wear gold/silver rings. Mercury forms amalgams with these metals and would tarnish gold/silver jewellery.

  • Even worse, the amalgam is a danger to a jeweler who may be resizing the ring. Some or most of the Hg would vaporize when the ring was heated to soldering temperature. The real danger is Hg vapors, not necessarily the liquid.

  • From roses to chocolate to horse urine.

Oh professor, you are such a romantic :)

  • Oh noes! He essentially divulged the Caramilk secret...call the FBI !!

  • Summer of 69!

  • Wooooo! :-D

  • Wow the Prof. had a nice 'fro since early age! Still now!

  • He looks exactly the same! His wife is quite sexy.

  • beautiful intro

  • i like the tie :D

  • Ah the joys of dipping things in liquid nitrogen!

  • Mmmmm... Chocolate yummy

  • I want to touch his bush!

  • @_@ Wtf... lol

  • @3ichard Be careful! His bush is the source of his knowledge!

  • @3ichard yuk.

  • I'm off to buy these "gooey" chocolates, and I'm holding you responsible for growing fat eventually

    =p

  • Mrs. Poliakoff is a hottie!

  • the prof went on a tangent this time. I love it.

  • Cute picture of the professor :D!

  • Agreed, and his wife was hot too =D

  • I have hot hands, if I hold a chocolate bar in one spot for any amount of time I'll melt it through the wrapper.

  • yay! fair trade chocolate I approve!

i also recomend ubuntu cola which is awsome!

  • I tried ubuntu cola, but the flavour didn't suit me. =o(

  • Does the freezing of organic material in liquid nitrogen cause permanent damage to the cells/structure, or can it be rejuvinated back to it's original (or perhaps close to original, of course) state? IE: if he were to not-break the rose, would it survive in water once thawed, or just die?

  • Well I know that when you freeze human flesh large ice crystals form, rupturing all your cells, so unless the rose is cold adapted (though this extreme cold may be beyond all but the hardiest) it'll probable share the same fate.

  • @Craydon that doesnt happen when u use something as cold as liquid nitrogen, because the ice crystals dont have time to form

  • No, the cells in the organic material rupture as

Craydon said, and the result is that the material will become "bruised". The effect off freezing organic material can be clearly seen when you freeze a cucumber as the damage in greatly increased because of the water content of the cucumber.

This is also why farmer don't like frost becuse as soon as the water freezes it damages the plants and crops.

  • Ah HA! The frofessor had his fro even when he was young!

  • I knew it !

  • the green and blacks almond chocolate bar is sooo good

  • Isnt this vdo from last year? Well now in HD ^^

  • He always had the fro!

    AWESOME!!

  • only a chemist would use an EM flask as a vase... well i guess only a chemist would have one too lol...

  • he still has not gotten rid of that fro

  • what? not rich enough to own a choco- ooooh, a race horse...

  • Hah I knew it, even when he was a youngster he had that crazy fro hair.

  • sooo cool love it!

  • ha no wonder the mints leak after they are kept for a long time

  • erm, wads the point of freezing the rose?? lol. tht part has no link to valentines day man!!

  • lol awesome tie!

  • Love this vid, thanks!

  • Happy Valentines Professor!

    Lovely roses.......

  • The enzyme and the sugar are not reacting the enzyme is simply a catalyst :D

  • HD YES!!!!!!

Nothing like Science in HD! :P

  • smell molecules lolz

  • Wish you would do a video on smells and sexual attraction.

  • Were any roses harmed in the making of this video? Sure looked like it.

  • This is actually the video they made late year. Nevertheless, you can always watch these episodes over and over without getting bored.

  • Is it the theobromine that eases PMS-problems? Chocolate used to work on my x girlfriend.

You chemists seem to have a lot of fun at work. Love you!

  • i learn so much from you than my chem teacher xD

  • Do i have a deja-vue or did he talked about that one year ago?

  • i love how he randomly started banging the rose against that thermos... or whatever that is. also i agree with pikmindoctor, the zooms are horribly annoying.

  • WOAH the brittle rose trick is real cool O_O awesome.

  • The flowers texture are the interesting part, they make water stick to the red part. Look under a microscope on it, very specific texture. Beautiful :D

  • bracks at the end. i thought they we're called bracks

  • Professor Poliakoff is awesome. Wish he taught in the USA.

  • Wow, the Prof even had amazing hair 40 years ago =P Why don't more people have hair like that?

  • Genetics. I think Prof might be Jewish.

  • He has a name that sounds Jewish to me... but can that contribute to having such awesome hair?

  • I grew up in a "Jewish ghetto". A lot of people had puffy hair like that.

  • you said jewish ghetto do you mean the concentration camps or like the ghettos of america ?

  • "Originally used in Venice to describe the area where Jews were compelled to live, a ghetto is now described as a "portion of a city in which members of a minority group live; especially because of social, legal, or economic pressure.""

    Google, use it.

  • In NYC all upper-class neighborhoods were predominantly Jewish. Maybe 15 years ago such neighborhoods may have been 90% Jewish and now it's like 60% Jewish, 30% Asian, 10% other.

  • 5 stars for hairstyle this time :D

  • i always thought good chemistry meant that they reacted well together in all different sorts of environments.

When theyre together (solid), when theyre around eachother (liquid), and even when theyre far apart (gas) they still hold the same reactive properties.

Couples need to be able to withstand pressure and prevent their bonds from corroding away in sour situations.

True love is when 2 monomers connect and maintain a strong bond under all conditions until they decompose.

  • What a beautiful thought, and what's more impressive is that you expressed it without spewing crumbs at me.

  • never stop doing this, brosephs

  • This is a great video. I like the theme.

  • 0:22 what a adorable couple! I wish my best, professor!

  • yay interpolation sucks!

  • @OehrGmbH but not frame interpolation, haha

  • @JaksProductions nearest neighbor is my favorite! screw bicubic! stupid bilinear! Let's go back to the 80's!

  • Oh wait I just realized this was from a year ago, so that's why it's a bit different I guess

  • Another great video...

But to the cameraman: Nice try but the zooms need to be much, much smaller, and unnoticeable to anyone who is not looking out for it. They should only be used when someone is likely to lean inwards with interest (for example, if a whispered secret is about to be revealed), and extreme close-ups are too distracting. Unless it's an art project people shouldn't be noticing what the camera is doing, sorry I can't help myself.

  • Can't believe it's been a year. The original version of this video was the very reason I subscribe and have been enjoying them ever since. That's for some amazing experiments and videos. Looking forward to what is to come. Happy Valentines Day to everyone at Nottingham.

  • A green rose would be awesome. :P

  • i was just thinking that!

  • Interesting and informative.

  • Lovely wife, Prof! Good for you!

  • Happy 40 years of marriage, Professor Poliakoff.

  • Happy 40 years of having the same hair cut Professor.

  • I don't know what's more difficult.....40 years of marriage or 40+ years of the same haircut.....

    ?

  • I love After Eight mints!

  • who doesn't?

  • loved the photo from your weding professor.the good old days rigth?
