@Sidowse Yeah dude. Sony's new A77 has a Twilight mode where it shoots at ISO 16,000. Yes, I put the comma in the correct place. But what it does is takes 6 images at that ISO and since noise is random, it replaces pixels as it needs to from those 6 exposures, and creates one clear image in very low light. Just an amazing tid-bit about ISO's, not comparing Sony to whatever...just kind of a cool feature.
I appreciate the effort, but I think perhaps you want to develop a deeper understanding of what the tools do on a more technical level in LR before making a tutorial video. The 'details' tool preserves details you say? I'm not sure there is anything to be gained from this video that 5 minutes messing around with the sliders in LR wouldn't get you.
GREAT explanation on the noise features. I've been using Ltrm3 for it's noise reduction for awhile now, but have been guessing at those features. I knew they worked- but I wasn't sure just exactly what was going on. Especially the Detail and Contrast. Thanks for the clarity!
Here we are almost a year later. I am using LR3.3. Camera is a Nikon D3X. I fight noise all the time it seems. After seeing your video, I'm going to start using LR for NR. But I wanted to ask you about the area to the right of the cocktail glass. There's what I consider a big chunk of noise that you don't address. It's the reddish-brown horizontal in the background. Is that because you don't consider that noise? Maybe I'm obsessing over this too much.

Nice tutorial. I want to know, now that I have Lightroom 3.2, does it's noise reduction in this version eliminate the need for Topaz or Nik software noise reducers? I could save a lot of money with not having to buy those plug-ins. I want to learn HDR using a Nikon D80 and some nice lens.
Hi. I had problems with sports pics taken at ISO 6400, after your tutorial the difference was fantasic. I had been trialing LR3.2, but it will be my next major purchase..flickr.com/photos/54721841@N03/5094393045/in/pool-sportsaction
Has anyone had issues with exporting the noise reduction adjustments from Lightroom 3? After I make the changes in Lightroom & export the new jpg file, I notice that the image appears sharper than it did when I made the changes in Lightroom. Almost as if my noise reduction adjustments were discarded upon export. Thank you in advance for the feedback!
@BustedShutter donde estan los tutos en espñol de este programita es el primero que veo queno he encontrado en todo you tube un solo video en espñol de este preograma!!! aaa buen video:)
@princedien A raw image is an uncompressed image. Your average point and shoot will take a picture and process it in the camera. There are some modifications that you can make to the photo, but they are somewhat limited. A raw photo takes exactly what the sensor picked up and dumps it on the memory card. Then later you would go in and adjust things in the picture such as white balance, color temperature and so on.
Very informative video. I just started using Lightroom a few months ago since the beta was free. Now I see what what all the fuss was about! I'll still always use Photoshop for more serious post processing, but I'll always start by developing my raws in Lightroom. The noise reduction really is great for me too since the GF1 really isn't the best in that regard. With a little work though Lightroom can clean up those files nicely.
@dandt87 maybe youtube hasn't finished processing the vid yet...i just watched it in HD at 720p and I can see the difference pretty clearly...thanks for watching!
great video man! Im getting this specially since its 50% off right now, I have a d7000 I wish i can afford a d700 to avoid this noise

@Sidowse: Not on a D700 it's not. D700 is crazy at how well it handles high ISOs. 6400 would be crazy if it was on a D90 though for sure :O)
