grand slam titles won by becker just 6.... won by lendl 8..... and we have to add the fact lendl was nearly 8 years older than the German......more or less the same difference between lendl and connors! anyway two enormous champions!
Boris Becker, Boris Becker, Boris Becker, Boris Becker, Boris Becker, Boris Becker, Boris Becker, Boris Becker, Boris Becker, Boris Becker, Boris Becker, Boris Becker, Boris Becker, Boris Becker, Boris Becker, Boris Becker.............................................
Was this the SF where Lendl was winning then it rained? Bad luck!
Lendl never did get the luck of the draw at Wimby. Seems like he always had to go through Becker AND Edberg (near impossible on grass) to win the crown.
In 86 he had to face Cash, another grass court great, who was in the zone for that final.
The best moment in this video is at 3:28 - when Becker makes the #1 signal with his finger and Lendl is SO pissed at it he simply can't stand to look at Becker.
It always really bothered me how so many Americans (my fellow countrymen) were against Lendl during his heyday. It disgusts me to be honest. Ivan is the most underappreciated tennis player ever as far as I'm concerned. His mind blowing achievements certainly have never been truly appreciated in this country.
Agreed! I always believed that Lendl's Eastern Bloc roots plus the Cold War vibe of the day cast him as forever the Evil Communist in the US.
As I stated in another discussion, there's a fine line between patriotism and jingoism. US media and fans repeatedly crossed that line when it came to Lendl.
You are absolutely correct. Forgot about his failures at Wimbledon. He was a far better player than any of the Americans of his era --, Annacone, Mayotte, Arias, whoever. Even McEnroe. If I'm not mistaken, his head-to-head against Mac is in his favor.
@Nigelxman Thats because hes the least sympathic no.1 theres ever been, at least in my opinion. He barely ever laughed, willingly went for the winners right on the body when they were at the net, and he just allways was so overdetermined, and never really did anything to change his atitude.
Pretty funny that now that hes making a comeback on the seniortour, he is completely changed and is just playing for fun and makes jokes like the others.
well, it was Becker who made me go crazy for tennis in 1985, as so many in Germany. But I always admired Lendl. He really raised the game on a more professional level in professionality. Lendl was one of the view who did cope with the biggest change in tennis: from wooden rackets to graphite rackets. Compare here on youtube Lendl vs Borg in Paris and then one of his late matches, what a difference! He totally rose the speed of his play.
I really miss the old standing room at centre court - it added so much atmosphere to the court.
Why did the government have to ban it just because stupid bloody football hooligans couldn't be trusted to go to a football ground without killing each ohter?
Tennis never suffered from crowd trouble so bring back the standing areas I say!
lendl would've beaten edberg, who played liked shit in the finals (after beating mcenroe in a flawless semifinals match.. i was PISSED at edberg for a while after that--until he gave away the aussie open to lendl in '90 b/c of a stomach cramp & lost to stich at wimbledon '91... edberg should've won both tournaments)
as usual, the guy i liked the least out of the four (becker) won
It's heartening to know that Lendl had such passionate fans....I thought I was alone. I didn't attend my internal tests in school for this match.....heartbroken is small word when Lendl lost. It hurts even today....the friggin rainbreak screwed everything. Lendl had to play the best in history grass-courters everytime in Wimby.....still his record on least fav surface is much better compared to Becker/sampras/Mcnroe/Federer at French open.Despite overlooked in the media he remains a great champ!
This is also my thought!! I beleived to be the only one huge fan of Lendl at that time!!! :-)) I was so disappointed....Becker was indredibly lucky against Lendl: at Masters 88 won with a net in the match-point during the tie-break and in this match the rain stopped the match just when Lends was close to win!
i remember watching this. i was a huge lendl fan. hearbroken when he lost. it was the best year for him to win, he won the queens club (defeating becker in the finals) coming into this. one of the greatest no.1. he carried it with professionalism, dedication, and a never ending fighting spirit
Fu*k I love Lendl! He came so close to winning this tournament a couple of times. It must have been hard playing with that racquet against serve and volley players on grass. He would have done better at todays Wimbledon because the surface is suited for groundstrokers instead of serve and volleyers. Lendl should've embraced Wimbledon earlier. Damn! Oh well, he did well still.

quite funny - Sampras, Becker, Edberg, connors - won all GSlams but french open
Lendl and wilander all but wimbledon
Mcenroe wibledon and us open
Seams the won either on clay and hardcourt or grass and hard court.
But mr. borg only won GS on clay and grass.
I believe those were the best players uptill 1990, Sampras as exception

I'm glad these classic matches are posted on Youtube. Inspirational in terms of my playing.

If Lendl were at his peak these days, he would have won wimbledon, as the courts play like hard courts these days

Lendl Cash Was In 1987.Lendl still the best tennis player for me even if he didn't won 16 gran slam.
I think federer is the combination of lendl and sampras game.
depechemode4ever1 2 years ago 5
Fed has a very different forehand movement. Sampras kind of took some details of Lendl´s forehand swing.

Still amazed that Lendl made 2 finals and 2 semis playing his "B Game" (S&V tennis).
Lendl himself said that to win a GS title, you need a little bit of luck to go your way.
Sadly, at Wimby, Lady Luck never did quite smile on Lendl (be it weather or draw). Even if Lendl wins this match, he still faces Edberg in the Final.
Fast forward 2008. Wimby officials decide to slow down the grass courts!
I'm sure Lendl's thought was "Why didn't they slow it down when I was trying to win it?"

The futility the Lendl experienced in his repeated attempts to win at Wimbledon are the same struggles that Federer has and will go through in Paris.
