The point I was making that due to the high cost of everything in California he probably couldn't put 40k away a year. Our household has a combined income of 80k a year and we have nothing. No savings, we can't own a home (median home price in my area is $700k and that's after the housing bust), rent eats up half of my income alone and then there are bills, food to buy, kids to take to the doctor, student loans to pay. I'm telling you 120k in the cities is nothing here.

Because 120K a year in a California big city (Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Diego, San Jose etc.) is nothing. The price of real estate (both owning and renting) is extremely high. Gas, oil, food, insurance, all of these are some of the highest prices in the nation. You pay for the whole package of living here unlike some other places in the country.

It's possible at this point to live frugally, it's unlikely, aspirations that got you that far mean living in a nicer part of town & networking with people that could continue to help progress your carrier. Mortgage & other costs could half that figure again. So now you have about 38k. extras like running a modest car & other things, leaves 25k. Now pray you don't develop a drink problem or that will clear the rest.
