This has to be one of the best songs of all time, the voice, the guitar riff, the backing vocals, the melody....sent from fucking heaven, absolutely mind blowing!!
My father is responsible for my love of music. I can remember riding in his car on our summer trips from CA to WA & singing this song at the top of our lungs. That was 30+ years ago, but it seems like it was just yesterday. Good times. Thanks dad.
This was written by Charlie's wife Margaret Ann Rich and released by Epic Records in late 1968 or early '69 when Charlie was trying to find his way around Nashville. It is evident that there was still a lot of Memphis and a lot of jazz in Charlie's music. As a young DJ I played this tune a lot on the small Florida Panhandle radio station where I worked. It is an absolute gem and deserves far more recognition than it has received.
@Pickher Sorry pickler.....IMO Charlie Rich is one of best ever, but on this particular song, RVS's version is a little bit better. And no one holds a candle anymore, we got lightbulbs now.
@sonnybait ditto, I had only heard behind closed doors an the most beautiful woman in the world before this. What a great feeling to hear this for the first time on Radio 2
