back in the day, i had a flip phone and it was easy as pie to sleep, drive, hold a conversation, whatever... on my phone. now that i have a touch screen... i know i can't do any of those things safely.
@nicpey If new phones still had actual buttons, all would be well. It is easy to figure out what you are pushing because of the little reference nub on the 5 (like the nibs on the J and F keyboard keys). You don't need to look down.
That is why I like my 6 year old Motorola. It does what it is told, nothing more and nothing less. No apps opening up in the background on their own will. No touchy touchscreen that only behaves when it wants to. Plus it has much better battery life.

I feel that when I do make a phone call when driving, I pay minimal attention to the call and if anything happens on the road, my attention is completely on that. But I don't make a habit of calling and driving.

I think a solution for this problem could be dictation-based texting: you just speak your message, your device converts it to text and sends it (on your command). We more or less have the technology for that, even if it needs a bit of improvement.
Another would be fully automated cars, where you just tell the car where you want to go and it takes you there. I need one like that. Though I doubt everyone would be eager to give up driving, even if it would save countless lives.
I saw an article online with very detailed pictures of a texting and driving accident. Guy was texting and smashed his car into a truck. Messing with your phone when there's no traffic around isn't too big of a deal, I'd say (as long as it's quick and not consistent), but if you're texting on the road, you might as well be calling someone.
If I'm on the freeway, I hate fucking with my gps when I'm in a new area, and I'm an enthusiast driver. Safety is always a priority. Vehicle maintenance and mental preparedness.

Kind of reminds me of computers in the early 00s they had single core processors and could do 1 task really well, but when you had a web browser, a video playing, and a game solitaire the machine Really slowed down. hence why they made dual, then quad, hex, now oct core processors. But we arnt robots, so we cant upgrade in 5 years.

back in the day, i had a flip phone and it was easy as pie to sleep, drive, hold a conversation, whatever... on my phone. now that i have a touch screen... i know i can't do any of those things safely.

@nicpey If new phones still had actual buttons, all would be well. It is easy to figure out what you are pushing because of the little reference nub on the 5 (like the nibs on the J and F keyboard keys). You don't need to look down.
That is why I like my 6 year old Motorola. It does what it is told, nothing more and nothing less. No apps opening up in the background on their own will. No touchy touchscreen that only behaves when it wants to. Plus it has much better battery life.

Traffic was getting heavy, I saw ahead and switched lanes thinking I would get a few cars up with my foresight. I think a solution for this problem could be dictation-based texting: you just speak your message, your device converts it to text and sends it (on your command). We more or less have the technology for that, even if it needs a bit of improvement.
Another would be fully automated cars, where you just tell the car where you want to go and it takes you there. I need one like that. Though I doubt everyone would be eager to give up driving, even if it would save countless lives.

I saw an article online with very detailed pictures of a texting and driving accident. Guy was texting and smashed his car into a truck. Messing with your phone when there's no traffic around isn't too big of a deal, I'd say (as long as it's quick and not consistent), but if you're texting on the road, you might as well be calling someone.
If I'm on the freeway, I hate fucking with my gps when I'm in a new area, and I'm an enthusiast driver. Safety is always a priority. Vehicle maintenance and mental preparedness.
