They knew because Kadri was ranked around their spot. He honestly could have gone higher but he had a broken jaw this year and didn't make the world junior team so that messed up his draft stock. The Leaf scouts were watching him all year. Kadri could have more upside than the guys selected in front of him. His skill set is great. Kind of like a Derek Roy-esque kind of player with less diving!
