I agree with everything you are saying... but.... Apply what you know of your day job to art. If you are applying for the job you now have against somebody else who doesn't have a degree or at least a degree that isn't related to the job, wouldn't you expect to get the job if your degree is related to the work? If you have trained for the job in higher education, isn't there SOMETHING more to your credentials? In any interview, the first questions you get are about your credentials.
Critiques by other artists are just as being up for a promotion at work. It is common to become emotional considering the work is usually sentimental. You cannot “know what you know” about being a “professional”. Are you a “self-taught” mammographer? This is close-mindedness and I implore you to reconsider an education in this field.
@ArwenWarner I'm a bit torn on your comment, there are part I agree with and some that I don't know where you are coming from.
There are a lot of people in creative fields that ARE self taught and do amazing on their own. And the thing with art classes is that when you take an art program you have to conform to the professors views, create something that is "actually art". Its still your creativity, but its not you. They tell you what is and isn't art according to them, which isn't right.
I deleted my naked vlog after 4,000 + views and 80 somethings comments in just a few weeks. That was almost 2 years ago. Maybe its time for a new one???
Amanda, you're very talented and you're right to be slighted by what happened. There are many ways to put on an art exhibition, so ignore the one's that involve a verbal slap in the face.
I don't consider myselff a art person at all. I do animations for fun. I can relate to your experience with that woman. Here in Norway I have been in touch with about 30 (!) companies to get a job as web designer/animator and they all turned me down. I didn't have the right background. I guess it also turned them off that I worked as a cleaner at the time. Screw them.
STA - I SAY ALL THE WAY!!!!!!! Amanda you said it best! LOVE THIS VLOG! ;) Big hug and kiss from another STA and lover of creating! You doo do awesome work and well, let me say thank you for entertaining me too!
WTF does she know? LoL Opinions are like assholes. Everyone has one and it's full of shit. She don't know what's good. She knows what SHE likes. Keep doing you... You're paintings are great.
Keep at it Amanda. Your art speaks for itself and is superb.
Ive asked a couple of galleries in the past and showed them some of my private paintings that i dont put online and they were both very positive until i said the evil "A" word (airbrush). The second i said i used an airbrush i suddenly became one of the art worlds scum.
The world of art has some serious attitude issues here and there and the sooner they wake up and accept more stuff "outside the box" so to speak, the better i think :)
I watched this video on GR's site and was absolutely gobsmacked - just as I was when Gary was recently denied studio space. I've been following your art for a while now and you are VERY talented. That woman was horrible - she needs a slap. You keep doing what you're doing. Your work is fabulous.
i say your portraits probly didnt like the lady anyway ; )
if your paintings are not going up at this gallery its because they belong somewhere else
in my neighborhood we have an art stroll day where artists expose in there home and put a sign outside aswell as are indicated on a little map, its real nice to see the art it its own environment i must say
People are jerks sometimes. I wonder if it's part of the plan to keep the 'non schooled' people out of the scene because.. IF this "don't have to go to school to get into the club" word got out, these schools might lose students. Students=money, lots of money. Sorry you had to go through that.
Awe what do they know. We just need to work on your expossure and vids like this are great! You should do the Portland sidewalk show. We should also create a mailing list of galleries and other media and send out a mass email.
Keep your positive attitude Amanda. Screw that bitch, she was probably jealous that she can't paint like you. I agree with most of the comments here. YOU SHOULD HAVE YOUR OWN ART SHOW! Rent a hall somewhere, advertise the hell out of it, and have a sell out. That woman will be eating her words as you laugh all the way to the bank!
Heh heh. This discussion was even 'pertinent' when Leonardo was painting. You just became part of that history. Heh heh heh. Congrats, you are among some of the greatest painters history has known. ;^)
Imagine how boring art (as a cultural event) would be if everybody agreed on it....at all.
You NEED to find a gallery that will LOVE to have you or else fuck em. No hard feelings (yeah right) but love my work or get the hell out of my kitchen. That is how art works. Always has, always will.
NEVER pay attention to what the ART people say. If they had any talent whatsoever they would do it themselves but they don't. They would rather hide behind some expensive education that is meaningless in the world of true expression. Galleries are for the dead, a memorial to the past in a way, be alive and enjoy your gift while you share it withe the world.
I am very uneducated about art. But I admire your passion and love for art and I can see that in this video and all your videos. I am sorry that the gallery in your town could not appreciate all of your hard work.
Oh, this just pisses me off no end! I can't stand arrogant art snobs! You are a fabulous artist and your work rocks. I bet this woman can't even paint her own toenails. I have admired your work for a long time and you have been a great inspiration to me in my own work. I love that you realize how good you are and what a gift you have. That woman needs to take a flying leap at a rolling donut. Big Hugs :-)
i'm not a fan of art snobbery ... but generally, if you want to be an "insider" artist and work and show inside the established art world, then you mostly have to play by their rules (which doesn't guarantee good art, btw) ... or, you can function *outside* the established art world ... which you're already doing (yay) ... and if you'd like to have the biggest art event they've seen up there in maine, you don't have to depend on a local gallery ... create your own art event ! ! !
What a bitch. People say stuff like that about my art too. For someone to insult you in such a way...it's ridiculous. You're wonderful at what you do, if people don't think it's good enough then fuck them. They have no idea what they are talking about. They think you need some kind of degree to be good, and that's BS. You have the passion for it, and you love it, and that's all that matters, not what some dumb bitch has to say. She fails. She should stfu more.
I love you, I love your art, and I especially love your sound effects!!!
But hey, we never stop learning do we?
You continue to amaze me the way you combine the art, the motherhood and the mammography... oh the energy of youth!!! Stay with it and I am sure your dreams will come true!
You are an international artist on youtube, and you influence me and inspire me on my path. Its hard not to attach yourself to negative words. I appreciate you!

Amanda, you should contact other midnight artists in your area and coordinate your own community craft fair. Forget the lady from the gallery.

You are simplifying art to an instinct.
Critiques by other artists are just as being up for a promotion at work. It is common to become emotional considering the work is usually sentimental. Any artist can paint what they see.
A genuine artist can paint what they observe.
