I could sit and listen to Thomas Sowell all day long, he absolutely exudes common sense! and common sense is not so common of recent date. We need him here in England as Prime Minister! He'll get my vote any day!

I already know a lot about economics and libertarian philosophy through the Austrian school. I'm planning to buy Sowell's book but I don't know if I can derive any more value from it.

I respect Dr. Sowell but I don't really understand what's unique in his work( at least when it comes to theory). His thesis that intellectuals do not possess adequate information was already posited by F.A. Hayek. That's why I'm hesitant to buy his books.
Well, then go check one out at the library or sit in Borders and read one and see if you like it before you purchase. I know times are tough all over and buying may not be an option at the moment unless you really think you're going to get something positive out of it. That said, I would recommend his three book series on Cultures.
wow, after listening to a feaux-intellectual like Barak, this guy is amazing, is it too late to write in Thomas Sowell, and can the other guy for pres.
I would read Thomas Sowell's books, but I happened to come upon so much other free-market literature before him, and he seems like a rather typical free-market economist, although he seems to say things in a more unique way and perspective. So I'm not sure if I'd get a whole lot out of reading his stuff.
You may not, but he does boil things down better than most people, so he can give a conservative/libertarian good ideas on how to argue for their principles.
I found "The Search for Cosmic Justice" a particularly insightful read. There, Sowell explains the inherent contradictions between true justice and social justice, and provides numerous examples of the folly that routinely occurs when social justice is pursued. Sowell rights two kinds of books, one for scholars and one for the layman. Just a head's up so you pick the right kind for you.
Protectionism would actually keep you in the middle ages. My original statement pertained to natural Internationalism through technological advancement and free trade. Nations are meaningless.
yes in the united states, nations, just as culture and intellectuals, are meaningless, I know - it figures
actually "progressivism" what you said also tends to go beyond nations and just cant love technological advancement enough (free market fundamentalism on the other hand slowly making me mad).
Well, I did type Progressivism, but I said everything is wrong with that ideology.
Intellectuals aren't necessarily meaningless; we each just have our own prejudiced view of what we want an intellectual to mean. I didn't realize studying history, literature, mathematics, philosophy, or economics made you an inferior citizen. It's more when you try to circumvent the markets politically that you run into problems. All the great innovators that the market had a use for could be
considered "intellectuals" in a strict sense. There's just this hate culture in the masses for people who are more intelligent and make more money than them. You must be careful in harnassing the same class warfare hatred to attack intellectuals lest you be there next target. I think reason and logic will win out at the end of the day. Indeed, isn't Thomas Sowell one of the most practiced "intellectuals"? What I'm getting at here is that it's great when you study material and
don't get into corrupt politics and let the market see if it has a use for your ideas. Many millionaires fall under that category. If you forsake that in favor of a regular joe lifestyle, Idk, grats on a medicore existence?
Progressivism does go beyond nations but you need to be careful here. Progessivism is a subset of Internationalism, not the other way around. A completely Free Trade ideology is also a subset of Internationalism. Same hierarchical phenomenon with
Progressivism doesn't mean "progress". "Progressive" refers to progressive taxation and in general, redistributing the resources away from certain classes, which, ironically, screws over the low-income, low-skilled classes the most to the benefit of the well-connected businessmen, unions and politicians.
Thomas Sowell is a very wise man, and he's real as well..
He struggled to get where he's at in his life right now, he went through so many tribulations and now he's reaping the benefits of his hard work.
I still think he is extremely underated as a thinker and economist, but he has done an amazing job with his life and career considering where he couldv'e ended up if decided to give up.
Dr. Sowell it's unfortunate that your 80 years old, but make your remaining years fruitful ones.

The Left constantly engages in self-aggrandizement through the cover of false humility.
When leftists denounce Western civilization's democratic legacy and capitalism, it's not an honest self-assessment, it's narcissism.
Dwarfs sitting on the shoulders of giants, leftists spit on their ancestors just to pretend that they're better & morally superior.
Just as the Left pretends that using other people's hard-earned money to fund their pet projects meets their own ethical responsibilities.
