  • Love the toggle you show i used that method for years , but was reluctant to show my awsome idea. I guess its the cook in me never give out a good recipe. Thanks again for the great vids we are definatly on the same wave Brother.

  • I assume this would make a good wash to wash out any cuts or scraps before you bandage them? Also maybe make a sort of thick paste with the dried powder to apply to a bad cut to inhibit infection? I'm just started out on all this survival stuff and so trying to learn as much as possible. I spent my whole life 50+ yrs roaming the woods and forests but never thought about surviving in them. I want to Thank You for all these very helpful video. Your video’s/teachings may save many lives one day.

  • Very informative video Dave! Thanks again!!!

  • I have Live oak where i live ,so could I use the acorns off the live oak

  • @wildernessoutfitters What happens to the white oak when you cut off some of that bark? Does it simply scar the tree? Also for staying in an area more long term would it be wise to use a different tree each time you needed that inner bark so the tree can heal?

  • Very informative video Dave thanks!!

  • Excellent.

  • dave ...thanks...jimbo

  • "white oak acorn white oak acorns white oak acorns... that works pretty good," So funny dude, just teasin! I love your vids! Video Sudgestion: Can you talk about the 550 cord bracelet and think up everything it can be used for? that would be awesome because right now in Oregon they are a big hit, and people are wearin' em just to be cool but I would like to see why you wear one! God bless- Lawcorp

  • i want to live in the woods, but i don't have any money to buy property out here in tennessee where i live. i may end up moving into a state park or something similar like land between the lakes. any tips?

  • Finally buffered for me lol...............Excellent series bossman!!!

  • Dave is that Canteen stainless or the old Aluminium?

    Thanks!

  • Super, cool stuff and great techniques ; ) Thank You.

  • GREAT VID DAVE THANK YOU FOR SHARING!!

  • Just a note white oak the leaf lobes are rounded, red oak leaf lobes have a point

  • Here's an easy way to remember the difference between white and red oak trees. The tips of red oak leaves are pointy, like the arrowheads used by native Americans. The tips of white oak leaves are blunt, like the bullets used by the white man.

  • is there a book that all of the medicinal plant, and how to use them? if so i would love to know. the internet is good for know, but when you get out into the woods, it doesn't help you very much.

  • I really love ur videos u are by far my favourite YouTube poster. Id love to get u to Australia and have u spend some time down here teaching some classes but unless i suddenly in lotto that's not hastening any time soon. Please keep these great posts coming.

  • well what about constipation

  • @champjb25 plantain seeds

  • @MrsNewAmericaNow in arkansas?

  • @champjb25 broad leaf or narrow leaf plantain grows everywhere. It is now considered a weed that the settlers brought over for a food source and since they had bad diets that lead to constipation, they would eat the seeds to remedy that problem. I'm sure it's all over your yard if you look = P

  • Thank you Dave! Awesome info!

  • I'm really enjoying this latest flurry of videos. I love it when you throw in the additional handy tips.

  • Dear Dave, Thank you for showcasing that metal canteen, and a great video. You said red oak was better for construction than medicine. Red oak is very common where I am and seem to have better yields of acorns. Does the red oaks completely lack the medicinal attributes of the white oaks?

  • Great series. More of this good stuff please! Thanks.

  • Another great video Dave!! What king of pack are you using in this video?

  • @DaveM1776 I'm not Dave but I know something about the pack :-)

That's a british army bergen. There are two sizes - short and long. Cheap, big and extremely durable pack. I live in Poland and used ones can be bought here for only about $30 (without side pockets). I don't know it's price in the States though...

  • Nice video,my favorite part was: why doe kay corns, why doe kay corns, why doe kay corns.

  • Dave I wish there was more people like you, bloody wonderful vid. Filled with knowledge.

  • I absolutely love these videos!

  • Would it be okay to take these medicinals on a regular, preventative, basis or should they held for needed use?

I know you're not a doctor, just wondering if any of the literature has said or you can think of a warning to not take them too often.

  • You really bring the field guides to life. No pun intended. Thanks for the helpful info. Hooah, stay sharp and live long!

  • great series, dave. thanks.

  • What's your top three packs for the wilderness, Dave? I remember you referencing a Marine ILB pack, but I can't find them cheap around here. Any suggestions (anybody)? Looking for something, preferably, that can be used in towns or cities and it will blend in.

  • Thanks for teaching us!

  • Are there any wild garlic or onions?

  • Dave, that has got to be the easiest way to pull a hot container out of the fire. Good stuff man! Good info on the White Oak as well. Thanks for sharing!

  • Cool, video

  • Awesome series!! I aways look forward to seeing the next in this series.

  • you should keep the beard it looks awesome. and i love the videos Dave they are so useful. Thanks

  • awesome video!

  • I passed by the oaks many times. I thought they were only good for deer. Thank you so much for this useful information.

  • "We just want the white inner bark, but we don't want to kill the tree. "

Spoken like a true naturalist, I am glad that I subscribed

  • Does that harm the tree? Also not sure what type we have over here in the UK, will need to do some research. However if it is white under the bark I presume we are good to go. Thanks.

  • I hope you will do a video when you get time on natural foods found in the east. I really haven't seen anybody do one here. Being able to Identify edible plants would be a life saver. I really appreciate the extensive range of your videos.

  • And here I thought I was the only one using the old metal canteen. :)

  • Great series Dave. We're up further north in Manitoba so would have to make some adaptions, but your instruction on practical preparation and usage is excellent; the instruction is "decocted" down to bite size portions that the common man can appreciate and use today.

  • great vid dave while im takin notes im gonna have to write a book it seams

  • hey dave can you do a video on eating acorns and different uses for them because they are everywhere here in florida

  • "Doesn't even taste nasty" I LOLed at that.

  • Like if you think Dave have a good voice for tv , i could listen to him all day and never get anoyed.. [ no not gay ] lol

  • Your amazing dude.. full of cools things

  • Thank you for sharing.................

  • hey dave i am thinking about buying a wheterlings axe and the size u are carrying is about perfect can u tell me what size is that one u have ?

  • Why white oak and not red oak for medicine? Thanks for sharing Dave.

  • I think I dont understand something do you live in a forest or in the town I looked in the TV where you and Codi are but I aint understand where your home is in the forest or in the town :D pls answer

    I hope it sounds friendly

  • Another reason I always carry my canteen, Guyot bottle and SS dog bowl in my pack. >_o

    Great video Dave!

    Thanks

  • Good video but at 3:00 the protective shell of the tree is gone. You need to apply a protective layer of mud or dirt at least to cover it from bug attacks.Aboriginal people did like that for thousands of years. Without the skin, the tree becomes defenseless. Preserving nature is a must!

  • Very good presentation. My grandmother is a "witch" and she told me that you can use oak for skin problems as well. For example when you have an eczema you should rinse it with oak tea - that helps. If you are interested in herbs visit my channel, I have a video of my granny making Pot Marigold salve. Best Regards Lilly

  • Oh Dave - you are the man!

It's really so great that you share all this knowledge with us! Your lessons are really soooo informative, it's always great to watch!

Sadly most of the trees that you are talking about are mostly only common where you live and because I live in Germany - wikipedia always tells me: "This tree is rarely seen in Europe".

I don't think, that European trees do not also contain medicinal qualities, but I didn't find anyone like you to teach about them on YT...

  • Just getting better and better. Thank you very much for all the information

  • Great vid, excellent, concise instruction!

  • Q: Whatcha snorting Dave? A: Bark. lol

  • Dave, just wanted to say I love these vids your channel has been making lately with the herbal remedies and uses for pieces of animal harvest. Fantastic stuff. Thanks.

  • My grandma always soaked the acorn meat over 3 days with 3 rinses before drying and grinding into flour. Do need to do that with white acorns?

  • Excellent presentation! Thanks so much for sharing! Best wishes -

  • Maybe I missed this in a past video, but when harvesting inner bark, how do you know when to stop? What's inner bark and what's just wood? Or is that just something I would be able to tell if I hacked up an oak tree? And speaking of hacking up an oak tree, do you do anything for the tree after making a small harvest like that? Trees get infections too when you hack off their outer protection.

Love this series btw, going to have to go back and watch other vids.

  • Great video Dave. What books do you use for medicinal plants and trees? I am in Ohio.

  • @dvsdarrel Petersons Field Guides, Lone Pine Press Field Guides and Matthew Woods Book of Herbal Wisdom

  • @dvsdarrel what part of ohio

  • @LiberalsArePigs Groveport/ Columbus, in central ohio

  • you could also use 2 sticks together to pinch it then pick it up as well if you didnt have any string..

  • Who makes that camo wool jacket you've been wearing?

  • @Prepare2Survive LL BEAN

  • @Prepare2Survive L.L. Bean "Maine Guide Zip-Front Jac-Shirt." I think.

  • This is a great series you've started Dave. I think witch hazel is another good tree to consider making a video about for this series.

  • thanks Dave you are the wilderness guru!!!!! you are a very smart guy and i hope you continue makeing the videos thanks

  • I am really digging that kydex sheath for that axe did might call blind horse and see if the kydex guy will mold me one for my bruks..... Great vid brother I am really loving these vid on trees I am remembering thing I forgot and learning alot of new stuff

  • what kind of axe do you have Dave

  • @hunto49 It is a Wetterlings have a GB same size, the Kydex is Custom by Shark Tac Kydex.

  • @wildernessoutfitters how much did it cost and how can we get one made/get in touch with shark tac to find out?

  • @wildernessoutfitters Question, Why no videos on making gunpowder and using flintlocks? I know it can be kinda gross to make, but it's no more difficult than making lye soap, really.

  • Great video Dave !!! maybe next put how to locate and what the tree looks like but over all great video

    thanks

  • @hunto49 I showed the leaves and the bark brother and Oak is everywhere, sorry I was not more specific.

  • Dave, I'm lovin this series. Good info.

  • Dave I wonder if you ever made cordage with nettles I live in northern Oreon and its all overthe place up here I have tried many times to make cordage using the reverse wrap ,have used the whole stalk (just experimenting)or just the fibers my problem is the splices never hold could you make a video on how to make nettle cordage right from pulling the plant in the wild to finished project

  • lol "doesnt even really taste nasty" i guess thats a good thing

  • Great video as always Dave. Do you have any uses for Buckeye trees? When I lived in Ohio, I had two big ones in my front yard and the only thing I knew they were good for was watching squirrels.

  • @fumasterchu12 it makes a half decent Spear.

  • @wildernessoutfitters Thanks for the reply, God bless.

  • @wildernessoutfitters You should put the type of tree discussed in each video in that video's title to make it easier to locate a specific video, as opposed to having to watch the video to determine what type of tree is featured.

  • @Skunkofoot rother I will try to add to the titles in the AM, Thanks

  • Which type of bankline do you use? the 106 pound test or the 340 pound test?

  • @guardians38 Both

  • @wildernessoutfitters I i could only buy one and take one into the field which should i take?

  • @guardians38 340 you can split it down when needed but have very strong cordage as well when you need it, made into reverse wrap 2 ply it is stronger than PC.

  • @wildernessoutfitters Thanks man. Love the videos dave! keep em coming!

  • Hey Dave I was wondering if you could do a vid on different natural baits that are useful for small game

  • Will it help a hangover?

  • love it

  • Hi dave,

I was curious on how much property do you own and do your classes on. I must say I am jealous of your life style

  • @MrLongboarder87 We have 65 acres in Ohio at the main location but we teach at 5 other US locations as well.

  • Very cool never would have thought of bark as medicine, Thanks!

  • I love this series !! Many stuff I didn't knew about

  • I have to agree with your first analysis, white oak acorns IS hard to say three times, lol. Excellent and useful videos Dave--love 'em!

  • cody would hate this...

  • Awesome man, thank you for the info =]

  • Always great videos from you Dave! Thanks, what a wonderful tree!! Thanks for common man principles! Peace man.

  • If you are new to harvesting bark, please do not "ring" the tree. "Ringing" a tree is where you cut bark in a full horizontal circle around the tree. This will kill the tree. Instead cut in a vertical line like in the video.

Keep making your awesome videos Mr. C, I can't thank you enough!

  • nothing like getting high in the woods

  • Thank you Dave for your wisdom and time. Invaluable information, loving all your videos and seeing new ones appear.

  • Very nice video!!!

BTW, "herb" is pronounced "erb", silent h :).

  • @BrookParkour only in america. Internationally it's herb :P

  • @JustWickedSwede Oh, thank you ^^

  • @JustWickedSwede BTW, he lives in America, Ohio to be specific, I also live there :). Although, I can see why he's pronouncing the h so people can understand him.

  • @BrookParkour When I last visited US I heard people say "erb" and I was like "WTH are u talking 'bout?!".

How come the H is silent in american english? it isn't in other words.

  • hey dave i was wondering if you new the plant called mugwort, i know its good for making tea for a cold and rashes

  • Really appreciate these wild edibles and medicinal plant vids Dave. BTW was just noticing your view numbers...you're kicking butt man. You are doing a huge and valuable service to people Dave THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!

  • Great video Dave. This will save me a trip or two to the local pharmacy. Thanks for this series. It has been very educational.
