I assume this would make a good wash to wash out any cuts or scraps before you bandage them? Also maybe make a sort of thick paste with the dried powder to apply to a bad cut to inhibit infection? I'm just started out on all this survival stuff and so trying to learn as much as possible. I spent my whole life 50+ yrs roaming the woods and forests but never thought about surviving in them. I want to Thank You for all these very helpful video. Your video’s/teachings may save many lives one day.
@wildernessoutfitters What happens to the white oak when you cut off some of that bark? Does it simply scar the tree? Also for staying in an area more long term would it be wise to use a different tree each time you needed that inner bark so the tree can heal?
"white oak acorn white oak acorns white oak acorns... that works pretty good," So funny dude, just teasin! I love your vids! Video Sudgestion: Can you talk about the 550 cord bracelet and think up everything it can be used for? that would be awesome because right now in Oregon they are a big hit, and people are wearin' em just to be cool but I would like to see why you wear one! i want to live in the woods, but i don't have any money to buy property out here in tennessee where i live. i may end up moving into a state park or something similar like land between the lakes. any tips?
Here's an easy way to remember the difference between white and red oak trees. The tips of red oak leaves are pointy, like the arrowheads used by native Americans. The tips of white oak leaves are blunt, like the bullets used by the white man.
is there a book that all of the medicinal plant, and how to use them? if so i would love to know. the internet is good for know, but when you get out into the woods, it doesn't help you very much.
I really love ur videos u are by far my favourite YouTube poster. Id love to get u to Australia and have u spend some time down here teaching some classes but unless i suddenly in lotto that's not hastening any time soon. Please keep these great posts coming.
@champjb25 broad leaf or narrow leaf plantain grows everywhere. It is now considered a weed that the settlers brought over for a food source and since they had bad diets that lead to constipation, they would eat the seeds to remedy that problem. I'm sure it's all over your yard if you look = P
Dear Dave, Thank you for showcasing that metal canteen, and a great video. You said red oak was better for construction than medicine. Red oak is very common where I am and seem to have better yields of acorns. Does the red oaks completely lack the medicinal attributes of the white oaks?
@DaveM1776 I'm not Dave but I know something about the pack :-)
That's a british army bergen. There are two sizes - short and long. Cheap, big and extremely durable pack. I live in Poland and used ones can be bought here for only about $30 (without side pockets). I don't know it's price in the States though...
What's your top three packs for the wilderness, Dave? I remember you referencing a Marine ILB pack, but I can't find them cheap around here. Any suggestions (anybody)? Looking for something, preferably, that can be used in towns or cities and it will blend in.
Dave, that has got to be the easiest way to pull a hot container out of the fire. Good stuff man! Good info on the White Oak as well. Thanks for sharing!
Does that harm the tree? Also not sure what type we have over here in the UK, will need to do some research. However if it is white under the bark I presume we are good to go. Thanks.
I hope you will do a video when you get time on natural foods found in the east. I really haven't seen anybody do one here. Being able to Identify edible plants would be a life saver. I really appreciate the extensive range of your videos.
Great series Dave. We're up further north in Manitoba so would have to make some adaptions, but your instruction on practical preparation and usage is excellent; the instruction is "decocted" down to bite size portions that the common man can appreciate and use today.
I think I dont understand something do you live in a forest or in the town I looked in the TV where you and Codi are but I aint understand where your home is in the forest or in the town :D pls answer
Good video but at 3:00 the protective shell of the tree is gone. You need to apply a protective layer of mud or dirt at least to cover it from bug attacks.Aboriginal people did like that for thousands of years. Without the skin, the tree becomes defenseless. Preserving nature is a must!
Very good presentation. My grandmother is a "witch" and she told me that you can use oak for skin problems as well. For example when you have an eczema you should rinse it with oak tea - that helps. If you are interested in herbs visit my channel, I have a video of my granny making Pot Marigold salve. Best Regards Lilly
It's really so great that you share all this knowledge with us! Your lessons are really soooo informative, it's always great to watch!
Sadly most of the trees that you are talking about are mostly only common where you live and because I live in Germany - wikipedia always tells me: "This tree is rarely seen in Europe".
I don't think, that European trees do not also contain medicinal qualities, but I didn't find anyone like you to teach about them on YT...
Dave, just wanted to say I love these vids your channel has been making lately with the herbal remedies and uses for pieces of animal harvest. Fantastic stuff. Thanks.
Maybe I missed this in a past video, but when harvesting inner bark, how do you know when to stop? What's inner bark and what's just wood? Or is that just something I would be able to tell if I hacked up an oak tree? And speaking of hacking up an oak tree, do you do anything for the tree after making a small harvest like that? Trees get infections too when you hack off their outer protection.
Love this series btw, going to have to go back and watch other vids.
I am really digging that kydex sheath for that axe did might call blind horse and see if the kydex guy will mold me one for my bruks..... Great vid brother I am really loving these vid on trees I am remembering thing I forgot and learning alot of new stuff
@wildernessoutfitters Question, Why no videos on making gunpowder and using flintlocks? I know it can be kinda gross to make, but it's no more difficult than making lye soap, really.
Dave I wonder if you ever made cordage with nettles I live in northern Oreon and its all overthe place up here I have tried many times to make cordage using the reverse wrap ,have used the whole stalk (just experimenting)or just the fibers my problem is the splices never hold could you make a video on how to make nettle cordage right from pulling the plant in the wild to finished project
Great video as always Dave. Do you have any uses for Buckeye trees? When I lived in Ohio, I had two big ones in my front yard and the only thing I knew they were good for was watching squirrels.
@wildernessoutfitters You should put the type of tree discussed in each video in that video's title to make it easier to locate a specific video, as opposed to having to watch the video to determine what type of tree is featured.
@guardians38 340 you can split it down when needed but have very strong cordage as well when you need it, made into reverse wrap 2 ply it is stronger than PC.
If you are new to harvesting bark, please do not "ring" the tree. "Ringing" a tree is where you cut bark in a full horizontal circle around the tree. This will kill the tree. Instead cut in a vertical line like in the video.
Keep making your awesome videos Mr. C, I can't thank you enough!
@JustWickedSwede BTW, he lives in America, Ohio to be specific, I also live there :). Although, I can see why he's pronouncing the h so people can understand him.
