replace the wooden plate with a stone one? so the items wont keep it close. this way it can keep farming (if silly mobs go in) and then u just collect it all at once

(maybe a sink down there? presure plate on a fence? maybe the items fall thru then make it go to onec collecting point?

the problem with steel doors to kill players in SMP is that you have to use lava otherwise the player will have at least 3 times longer to destroy the pressure plate.
