How many times I turned the station when this came on the car radio. I never had the time or the patience to really LISTEN to it. Now, so many, many years later, I realize that I should have taken the time.
I'm a very wise person and this song makes me realise there is alway room for improvement, I should never take anything for granted. I shall never be to complacent. Treat people the way I want to be treated. I will not look down on people because others will look down on me. I like this because it's not preaching or telling you what to do. It's just giving helpful tips on how to view things,
It's good stuff this song/monologue. And we all need a little help in our lives from time to time, whether it be from things like this or other sources, seek all the help you can from wherever you can get it. It's the not seeking help when we need it gets us stuck. Or not trying to even find help. Sometimes it's hard to understand the help or to trust it, but just keep trying. That's all anybody can do in life, is try...
this is the first time i heard the song after almost 15 years! I never had the chance to again all this time. All this years the meaning of this song lingered on within me. I didn`t remember the lyrics, had forgotten the performer`s name, but i always remembered the phrase " Advice is a form of nostalgia". With this phrase in mind i started looking and looking..... It`s insane how i feel exactly the same after all this time.... This bitter-sweet song is -in my opinion- the best advice i ever got
this is what my mom used to listen to when me and my brother were really little. she wasn't an acoholic, she was my best friend, I loved everything about her, and she was my role model. I honestly wish I could say the same today. I haven't listened to this in forever, and It makes me cry now. I would give anything and absolutly everything to get those days back. I guess that just goes to show you can only love something for so long, but then it leaves, and only a miricle would bring it back.
As a 40-something, I know what he means by "not understanding the power and beauty of your youth"... when you are a teenager, you never think that one day you will ache when you get out of bed in the morning, you will not be able to run like the wind, and you won't be able to stay out clubbing till 6am like you used to.
I'm 18, just finished high school, going to college in September, recently diagnosed with cancer for the third time, and this song is so relevant for me at the moment. I love it.
@Sennannyo17 i m 22 just came from pakistan to study here and i m crying after reading your comments i love you who ever and where ever you are . . . . cant stop crying
This is the best, most positive, honest, inspirational song I have ever heard. I made sure my kids heard this song when it came out.
My son just sent me this video the other day, because he knows how much I love it. He is now 24 and totally gets the song and loves it. We need more positive, uplifting songs like this. Especially for our youth. Shawneen.
I heard this for the first time today on the radio.. My daughter is graduating this year.. If she could take only a tiny bit of this and apply it to her life.... :)
I'm 35 yeas old and have never heard this song until today on the way to work. It changed my perspective; I believe there is much wisdom in this, and I feel like I missed out by not hearing it all those years ago.
I'm 35 yeas old and have never heard this song until today on the way to work. It changed my perspective; I believe there is much wisdom in this, and I feel like I missed out by not hearing it all those years ago.
At school we have to pull it apart and analyse it on a musical approach, and it quite annoyed me after listening to it over and over again but I never really took in the message, I was too busy trying to figure out instruments used and key signitures etc...
and now I re-listen to it, I can actually appreciate how great it really is.
I guess I'm lucky having heard this song when I was about 10, being 16 now, I am making the most of my parents and my youth. I would hate it if I heard this song too late in life to do anything about it.
This was the most true song when I first listened to it at 40,.. I think. So true, and more true as time goes on. I cried, loved it and hated it at the same time. Now that I'm 50-something...I look at pics, think of he past more than I thought I would, miss and wish I knew more about my Grandparents, wished I saved more, wished I listened.
There are a lot of people who live life like it is meant to be and like Baz Luhrmann proposes here. Do you think these people start at 40? They start the moment they are born. I don't think Baz Luhrmann was, for else he would not be dispensing so much advice, something he feels very strongly about ironically. . Maybe RedSkyLights is one of them happy people. I know I am!
I am only 15 and i find this song to be the most inspirational song on earth. There is no description to it but inspirational. It dosent help me now, but it will later on. Thats why i wear sunscreen.
I was given this, as a book, when I turned 21. I have taken it all of it to heart. I pass off copies to every kid I know, and if one takes it to heart, then I have done my job,

Maybe u will marry maybe u wont and perhaps u wont live long enough to worry about the future and have the chance to look back at photos of when u were young. The race will not be long if u sunbathe

I love looking at my photos of myself when I was 17 and 18 years old. I am 22 years old now and I am making sure I take photos of myself and store them on my hard drive that is connected to my computer. I have a backup of all the photos of me growing up so I will be able to keep them all the way until I get gray and old at the age of 100. People make sure you take photos of yourself trust me I am glad I did when I was 16,17,18,19 years old and I still am taking photo's.
This song gives me chills. I wish I could make every high school student listen to this, but in the end they would never understand anyway. I heard it in high school, thought it was cool. Heard it ten years later, and it made me cry.
@vixenpixie81 I know how you feel about telling students today that their youth is so precious, I am 22 years old and I feel like my youth is starting to fade.
@weareewancameron@markhope2nz Don't be worried about 22, guys. 22-26 were the best years of my life. I'm looking 30 in the face this year, and that one is scary...
We understand it, thanks!! 99% OF US DO!!! Yes, the kids in my class have heard it and from all of them there was only 1 who didn't get it the first time!! They got it the second time!! Don't be so damn stereotypical. Just because we're portrayed as stupid in some of the media, doesn't mean we are!
Sincerely,
One of the Many High School Students Who Understands!!
She didn't mean high school kids are stupid, she just meant they're too young to fully grasp the message. I know when your 17 you like to think you're mature and know everything about life and the world, but it's just impossible for a high school student to completely understand. You may understand the lyrics, but you don't understand the troubles the world will give you or how fondly you will look back on the days that you are currently living.
@RedSkyLights Lol. No. There's a reason they call it "experience", and generally, you have to live it. :3 But it's okay - you're obviously going through some kind of phase, or something.
@vixenpixie81 You and I must be the same age! I just listened to this the other day as I was planning a trip to the river with my younger friends and relatives. I can only imagine what we'll think in another ten years.
I was wondering what I should do about what I'm in just now and I randomly logged on to Facebook and a mate of mine posted this song on there. Thanks for posting I really needed this
I remember this from years ago. Glad to have found it again!! I will pass it on to my kids who are in their late teens, early twentys. They can really use it.
Wow. Im 13 In A bad time. Song made me realize whats going on. I know what to do guys. :) Good song. ill pass it on when im 22 Like U ppl under me LOL ;D
i'm 23 years old and when i heard this song for the first time as a young pre-teen it immediately changed my life. the message is completely profound. anytime im ever feeling like things are getting to be too much or my life is headed the wrong direction i remember this very song.
I totally agree with you man...i'm one year older than you, but pass through the same feelings! it's simply overwhelming...the first time i've heard the song, i got the creeps.
I heard this video last year, and I couldn't stop thinking about the message. It is very inspirational. It brings tears to my eyes every time I hear it.
Its all so true he knows what its like............ like about the beauty magazines its so true thats why people are so plastic now because they show people that are overweight or are felling rough but they are just human beings! ~bforbrand~
Having just turned 22, about to finish uni, and without a clue of what I want to do with my life, i'm so happy I re-found this song lol... Perfect timing and amazing lyrics!
I PROMISE YOU - no matter what problem you have, this song can help you deal with it, even if not directly, the answers in here, look into the lyrics....i promise!
@ghostalkercepo I heard this for the first time, and found one of my old C.d's with this on it but it was scratched so I youtubed it, I'm turning 16 and I have to agree this song had a huge impact on my life and I never relised it.
makes you think. A LOT.

@weareewancameron @markhope2nz Don't be worried about 22, guys.

RedSkyLights 9 months ago 2
@RedSkyLights
She didn't mean high school kids are stupid, she just meant they're too young to fully grasp the message. I know when your 17 you like to think you're mature and know everything about life and the world, but it's just impossible for a high school student to completely understand. You may understand the lyrics, but you don't understand the troubles the world will give you or how fondly you will look back on the days that you are currently living.
rbc90 9 months ago 2
@RedSkyLights Lol. No. There's a reason they call it "experience", and generally, you have to live it. :3 But it's okay - you're obviously going through some kind of phase, or something.
