I've read in a book that gerbils need real protein occasionally and the book recommended to give them mealybugs... I wasn't so fond of it so i gave them yoghurt but i hadn't thought about cheese! it's even more richer in protein!

lol, cool. My gerbils when I had them never ate cheese, they hated it lol I spoiled them with nuts and pumpkin seeds. Once they like something, they always remember lol. Cute

Cheese is good (only in very small amounts though as its very fatty), fresh fruit 2 or 3 times a week (mine like strawberries, melon and tomatoes - again not too much as the water content can upset their tummies) and also you can get treats from pet shops (chocolate and yogurt type things). Mine also like raisins. Give them the cardboard centers from toilet rolls too - mine could chew them up all day long!!!

They also like nuts. I give them cashew nuts sometimes and they also love sunflower seeds. But like antallen257 said, only 2 or three times a week as it upsets their stomachs and they will get fat.

when I got my gerbil he was like that too.

Put your hand in the cage everyday and feed it with that hand (even if it means dropping the food in the ground for them) and he will eventually eat right out of your hand! (mine did)

yes - despite popular opinion they can. Ours have had cheese since we have had them and no problems (a small amount as a treat only). This has been approved by our vet.
