One drawback: it can't seem to play runs, just random notes up and down the octave, even though a majority of keyboard music features scales going up and down.
I was very interested to hear that this robot was constructed at Georgia Tech, because that's where I'm starting school in the fall. This project makes me quite proud to be going there.
my biggest complaint with pop/rap music is that it's too digital- I feel that a computer will never be able to express real emotion or true human creativity. This video challenges those beliefs, and that worries me. :S
@Dustinwheeeee just timing and mathematics, maybe you have to redefine what you thought of being emotions in music,,at the other hand this shimon shows more SOUL than lots of people these days,,strange times we live in.
I can appreciate the accomplishment from a scientific/technical perspective. Quite a novelty I must add. But when they threw in the 'Monk' and 'Coltrane' effect they lost me...Monk and Coltrane were musical geniuses and creative artists. This machine doesn't even come close to replicating their style. The robot sounds, at best, like a telentless person playing random notes. The person who invented this obviously lack the musical talent and understanding of what it takes to make great music.
I think it's funny how they programmed the head to bob with the song and blink. I wonder if it does anything more. Like if it helps the robot in creating impromptu stuff.
All it really does is process the notes and figure out the chords and what corresponding notes it can play in variation according to the rhythm. It's not really "improvisation," it's variation.
who wouldn't want to jam with a robot? most human beings can't play this... this music is called jazz.... something most kids today can't even begin to understand. thelonius monk and john coltrane were gods.
I would enjoy just taking a baseball bat to that thing. If there's one thing in the world that we shouldnt let a fucking machine take over, its music.

Ok here's my question. Is the robot "feeling" the music when it's moving it's head around, or is that somehow programmed in?
quadmaster89 7 months ago
@quadmaster89 You can easily hook up your Christmas lights to turn on and off depending on what music you feed into it.
I'm sure his head works on the on the same principles. It senses the BPM of the music and bobs its head accordingly.

The new HAL: "Yo HAL, baby, can you do me a groove in C# and 5/4 time?" HAL's response: "Sure Dave, just lay me down a few bars to start with."

It's not that Shimon has no talent. It the dude who gave him the music that's a crap musician. Who could POSSIBLY work with that?

A look at the future... This is just as scary as the feared B Flat was to the 9th century monks who then promptly banned it.
This is simply and extension of the human muse, definitely NOT a replacement. Do not fear friends and neighbors. Artists created this.
