They should make a wax figure of him at Cooperstown when he gets there. He is the definition of intimidation as a pitcher. And his stats match his stature.
at 6 10 with that 3/4 delivery lefties hit under 200 against him in his career he was a freak of nature there will never be another randy johnson... plus you cannot match the mullet
I remember when the Montreal Expos traded Randy Johnson for Mark Langston in 1989. The wost trade ever. Langston didn't do all that much for the Expos in the stretch run and left at the end of the season while Randy Johnson went on to become a superstar.
I liked Randy when he was a little wild with his pitches. I remember going to a game when I was 13 at the kingdome before he got his mechanics down. I think he cruised for the first 4 or 5 innings then he just lost his control. It was actually the most entertaining pitching performance I have ever seen in person. I think he missed the catcher and hit the backstop 2 or 3 times.
if you weren't filled with fear when you stepped up to the plate to face randy, you were either high off your ass, or it was a dream, plain and simple!
I wish Johnson would have used the juice... imagine how fast his fastball would have been if he took roids.. shi... like 106 mph prob.. just like Ken Griffey Jr. Major League Baseball for N64!
@SimpleStuff31 This is an excerpt from a piece by Buster Olney.
By the late '90s, about 15 years after Hershiser learned to work out with the two-pound weights, an increasing number of pitchers were arriving at spring training looking like Jose Canseco... "guys who had been clocked with fastballs at 87, 88 mph were throwing 92, 93," he says. "You might see them two or three days in a row, and they'd maintain their velocity. There was no drop-off."
i like the Big Unit too best picher for the last 15yrs who did not take steroids randy johnson best Hitter for the last 15yrs who did not take steroids Ken girffy Jr both players have the best numbers for what they did atleast those are my 2 favorates.
I do believe this was Randy's final game as a Mariner in 1998...9 innings, 4 hits, 4ER, 6 BBs, 12 Ks, and absolutely zero-interest in playing in Seattle.
This was his last game. Tough season for RJ and for the team. I think he tried that year for Seattle just wasn't totally 100% behind us since ownership stabbed him in the back.
@IntenseLowerChafing I think he regrets it though. After the fallout of the trade he rooted for the M's to beat the Yankees in 2001 so he could play them again. He would pose for photos with Mariner players. He threw the first pitch of the Mariners 2010 season following his retirement. If given the choice he would go in as a Mariner without a doubt.
@stevensw, if that was true why didn't he? He could have gone back to the M's, but he didn't. He refused to sign an extension w/ the M's, sparking the trade to the Astros, and he never made the choice to go back. Sure he may have cheered for his old team over the Yankees and sure he may have kept in touch with old teammates and remained friends with them. But to say that he regreted signing with other teams or that he secretly wanted to go back to Seattle is nothing but baseless speculation.
@jdlund I think he had a great time in Seattle and in his retrospect he probably had more fun in Seattle than he did with the D-Backs and took it all for granted, but that's not something he could have realized until he threw his last pitch for the D-Backs.
The Seattle GM at the time was a complete idiot and thought he was entering the twilight of his career and didn't give him his due appreciation, and this made RJ angry because he loved Seattle but his treatment by the GM was unacceptable.
