  • Nice video, but for your information, Operation Switchback ended 0ctober 3rd when the German 64th infantry division under general Knut Eberding surrendered at Knokke (B). If you're interested, see if you can find the (extremely rare) books "Libera me" and "Slag om het Schipdonkkanaal" by George Spittael, both dedicated to the war efforts of the Canadian 1st Army in the region. I know that a few Canadian libraries have copies.

Leopold Canal is 10 minutes from where I live by the way.

  • I believe i was named after the Peter Craigen mentioned in the tags.

During the early stages of Leopold Canal fighting on 6 October 1944, C Company took very heavy casualties, and German counterattacks were able to close up on the Company positions. Most remaining personnel were wounded and were ultimately captured. Men were a mix of members of 14 Platoon, led by Sjt. Kenneth Bergin and 13 Platoon, led by Lt. George Black.

  • Amazing Video!

  • Every year in November people from the mentioned region in Belgium and the Netherlands (Zeeuws Vlaanderen) walk the 33 km Canadian Freedom March to remember and honour the liberators.

  • @kfinterniksan I think it's amazing about the March. It's very touching to hear so many wonderful stories about the people in Europe and how they honour our hero's. I went to the Canada Museum in Adegem and met Mr. Van Landschoot and was overwhelmed by his family history and by the wonderful Museum he has, truly a great family and Museum. I hope to visit a few more places in the future to finish off the 23rd series.
