Levon Helm touches my heart and soul a bit like no other artist ever...There is NOBODY recording out there whom I find more genuine, sincere, just absolutely REAL to the core. He also seems to have true humility coupled with an inner wisdom and confidence about what is truly important in this life. Hope he hangs on a good while, yet; he'll go sooo sorely missed. Oh and he's wise to the rotten crap that transpired w/ Robbie and his Band break-up, too. Read his words. Still must get his book(s)!
@cherimelodie This Wheel's On Fire is GREAT book. Levon does contradict himself on some the Robbie issues, ( hard feelings at that time) but still a book you just can't put it down. Levon is the BEST!
he can sing in this, but i just watched a video im guessing recent where his voice is basically gone, his cancer was ages ago wasnt it? im confused to why his singing here is good, someone help me outt
i'm a bit late on this train, though i'm 45 and grew up in ohio, sometimes you grab some dirt and a few jewels slip past your fingers. but i'm here now listening to Mr. Helm like we never were apart. i'm a ballad man myself so if somebody will stear me towards the high lonesome stuff i would be obliged.
@donaldnewmanmedone somehow i got the wrong impression about "the band", not sure how. looking forward to proving myself very wrong. i appreciate the the nudge in the right direction.
Everyone does NOT need a College Education to succeed on this Earth. We need Farmers, Mechanics, and 'hands-on' people.......who sometimes are smarter than a College Graduate, in their compassionate and Empathy.....othjerwise our EARTH would 'crumble'.
@ldsmom777: I agree. Some people see college as a meal ticket, but a healthy way to look at it is an organized series of topics to learn. It's not an end all by any means. There is so much to learn on this earth, so much to get your hands dirty with...and the next evolution is always on the next horizon which is why life is so beautiful.
@ldsmom777 I and my hubby are both, hands on people... Yes, thats what makes the world go round.. W/o us... Things would suck. As our lives R going to here real soon. Thanks Obama
So the first time I heard this song was just after I read The Rash Adventurer by Imogen Grundon (biography of John Pendlebury) and it just gave me chills. Pendlebury gave his life during the German occupation of Crete trying to save the Greeks. "because sometimes even the strongest soldier falls" just about summed it up for me. This song never ceases to touch me deep within. Powerful.

Such an amazing thing that he can write his best song at his age. So many writers and singers kind of fade into mediocrity as they get older, but this is like his masterpiece. Such a moving song.
@chuck1990bb This song was not written by Levon Helm. Though i must agree on the musical side, dirt farmer and electric dirt are Masterpieces, all cover songs, but they never sounded better!
yes thats Amy Helm on back up vocals with some help from one of the greatest blues singers also helping out ALEXIS P SUTER..who plays as Levons house band up here in Woodstock at Levons rambles
Full of grace and courage... it takes a lot to look and feel the reality of the human condition... and he has that and more. What great contributions he has made, and what a magnificent and beautiful song. It seems that no matter what we do,about the best we can do, and only at times, is be 'halfway home'.
This song is for all generations, I recon, but now as we struggle through this economical nightmare it seems to take on that, song for the times, kinda flavor. Gotta just keep on keepin on Great song Great singer. LIVE ON LEVON. Thanks for the post.
Just startling. Great soul and anguish in Helm's voice and goosebump-inducing harmonies. Helm is a true legend of American music and I thank you sincerely for the post.

Great song, but his daughter's attempts to sing with him (pardon the pun) fall flat. She adds about as much to this song as Puff Daddy used to add to the Notorious BIG's songs.
Is this the same guy who played as Loretta lynn's father in the coal miner's daughter? To me his singings is okay but back in the days when the film was made this guy has one of the sexiest voice and accent ever !!!!

Been a fan of Levon Helm for more than 40 years now, since the days when he was with The Band.
Never gets old, and never goes stale.
The fiddle in this song can touch you to the very core, and if I'm not mistaken, that's his daughter doing backup vocals.
God Bless this old Pilgrim, for giving us such wonderful, wonderful music over the decades.
