Levon Helm touches my heart and soul a bit like no other artist ever...There is NOBODY recording out there whom I find more genuine, sincere, just absolutely REAL to the core. He also seems to have true humility coupled with an inner wisdom and confidence about what is truly important in this life. Hope he hangs on a good while, yet; he'll go sooo sorely missed. Oh and he's wise to the rotten crap that transpired w/ Robbie and his Band break-up, too. Read his words. Still must get his book(s)!

@cherimelodie This Wheel's On Fire is GREAT book. Levon does contradict himself on some the Robbie issues, ( hard feelings at that time) but still a book you just can't put it down. Levon is the BEST!

So the first time I heard this song was just after I read The Rash Adventurer by Imogen Grundon (biography of John Pendlebury) and it just gave me chills. Pendlebury gave his life during the German occupation of Crete trying to save the Greeks. "because sometimes even the strongest soldier falls" just about summed it up for me. This song never ceases to touch me deep within. Powerful.

Never gets old, and never goes stale.

The fiddle in this song can touch you to the very core, and if I'm not mistaken, that's his daughter doing backup vocals.
