  • I find it interesting that someone as (apparently) rigid in her thoughts as Natalie could still be artistic in nature.

  • I almost can't listen to this, because of old girlfriend memories, but great nonetheless. :)

  • Take a look...the best brazilian singer Amanda Bellino "Sonho de Verão" (Summer Dream)

    Beautifull Song and Beautifull Girl!

  • one of my all time favorite songs, too bad sung by such a pretentious person.

  • almost jizzed my shorts at 1:46

  • damn, natalie so sexy in this live concert.

  • Nataliie is one of those singers in the line of Sade and Enya who is beautiful, sexy, smart and talented but always a woman.

  • @probrojeffro no disrepect, but sade or enya could not even carry natalies micorphone imo

  • @advhutch The millions of Sada and Enya fans would disagree, as do I, but each has a subjective view in regards to music.

  • She didn't seem to appreciate her fans and also she came off as quite the snob. We probably have the same politics but she doesn't have a warm personality at least that comes through. I did love this album though. Brings back memories.

  • :)

  • simple mind

  • i think this is there best

  • It was a blessing for me to once know and hang out with a young woman who had personality and resembled Natalie on this video. Back then this was just a cool song to me, today, these lyrics could well be about me.

  • "in their prime"... i like to think of them as a fine wine, getting better with age (at least while Natalie was there).

  • As of 9/8/2011 Five people don't like the weather!!!

  • Is there a studio version of this anywhere?

  • @Tsunaphoenix3 yes there is a studio version,on the album 10000 maniacs in my tribe.lp is very good.injoy.

  • around the 2:40 mark I actually saw an audience member move

  • Apparently five people don't like a voice that melts butter.

  • So, with this Irene hurricane I've just got to ask...LIKE THE WEATHER?

  • What a talent. And what a shame that she's such a rigid ideologue, which, in turn, dried up her creativity like the sun in Arizona on July 4th.

  • @7855waldo Rigid ideologue? How so?

  • Klahc1-- you are so right!

Holly Kegler wherever you are, thanks for turning me on to the Maniacs.

And how did that marriage thing workout?

  • Every good thing i've ever known in life is combined in Natalies voice and spirit. It's almost to much to bare, yet i come back for more time and time again and i always will.

  • What's wrong with the audience??

  • @TheDrunkAlcoholic I thought that too.Like zombies..:)

  • very cool, blessings forever...Andy

  • Too bad they broke up. Natalie's a great voice, but the music's not the same without the group. Just one fart's opinion...

  • so, this song is supposedly about depression? i suppose it could be... i never thought of it that way. But after living in Chicago for a few years, i can relate to the not wanting to get out & do anything part... heck, even 100-degree Texas heat will do that to you. You get cabin fever - that in itself can make anyone feel depressed, esp. when it's 20 degrees out & there's too much snow on the ground! So i think it's a little bit of both.

  • louder volume please

  • Zombie audience!

  • Michael Stipe once jumped out of a window to avoid Natalie Merchant. Great song.

  • What the hell is the matter with the audience?? Bunch of friggin' corpses man - I'd be dancing my ass off!!

  • natalie merchant great voice eyes smile....

  • @brods73 yes the eyes

  • natalie merchant great voice eyes smile....

  • What a hot peice of ass!

  • this woman has a lot of class...a lot of beauty...this woman is a lady....

  • my ex-wife looks amazingly like her.

  • What energy, beauty and poise!

  • What's the matter here is another great one.

  • i first heard that song in early 1989 on board the USS Constellation and i really loved it...

  • Worst guitar solo ever??

  • What a lifeless audience...If I was there, I'd be spinnin'...

  • I <3 Her I feel like I'm Cheating on Miranda Lambert and Jennifer Nettles (Sugarland) lol They are all Fabulous Ladies! Truly Gifted Real Gal's ;D

  • Her music strikes the deepest chord.

  • Natalie merchant is so adorable! Love each and every thing she sings...

  • I heard this song in Home Depot the other day and just couldn't shake it.

  • natalie merchant was so early '90s hot...

  • yah man, this one will get stuck WAY up in your head and wont leave for ages.

  • The first time I ever heard this song (so long ago) it got stuck in my head. Never went away. Love it.

  • LOVE THIS SONG!!!

  • I love her 10,000 maniaaaacs

  • Such a unique song sung by such a unique voice. I loved this song back in '88 and "Trouble Me" in '89. Nothing I heard from them after then ever struck a chord with me (admittedly I only heard what ended up on the radio/MTV), but those two songs were something else.

  • @rb62470 They do an incredible version of Peace Train.

  • @IraHayesIraHayes yes they do badd ass in fact

  • @IraHayesIraHayes yes they do!

  • @rb62470 - I've never heard anyone else express this that way, but I feel exactly the same. Those two songs, in particular, kicked ass.

  • @rb62470 oh geez, i hope you get an opportunity to take a listen to some of Natalie Merchant's more recent stuff. she's remarkable! you won't be sorry...

  • Natalie sounded so smooth on this song but then again? she did on all :)

  • @10kmtv Your right about Buck's name. I remembered it wrong momentarily

  • Natalie was at her peak when writing music with Joe Buck (RIP). She was and still an original talent. She is beautiful and the world is a better place with her in it. What an angel.

  • @TheLopedog321 Joe Buck is the character in Midnight Cowboy. Robert Buck played guitar in our band.

  • @TheLopedog321 Agreed 100%

  • I love the democracy of rock and roll where an eccentric woman like this can have her own unique style and shine for it rather than being pigeon-holed or even rejected in other sectors of our culture. It's a reaffirmation of the value of the individual as a unique entity. Really odd and nice song. Who'd think up such a song? Glad they did. They were a good band and I think Merchant shined more with them than without.

  • Very neat Hippie Chick!

  • I like to listen to this song on drizzly days . I think it's the juxtaposition of the snappy "up" beat against the sort of "downer" subject that does it for me .

  • "and by the force of will my lungs are filled, and so I breath" I have never connected to a song as much as this one. I have suffered from depression my whole life. The 1st time I attempted suicide I was 7. Good thing I was too young to know how to it properly.

  • SWEET HIPPIE CHICK

  • SHE STILL IS AWESOME

  • At first I thought the audience was dead. Then I realized that they were just mesmerized by her voice.

  • elaine benes dancing =D

  • If you can believe it i knew a girl in college that could easily have been natalies double without a doubt. Too bad she was married but she was drop dead gorgeous.

  • I get "Wood" when i see natalie.. LMAO....

  • i love Natalie for life!!! I totally fell the lyrics

  • @deeperwaterz I hear ya' man! I remember when she was all I could think about. Guess a guy has to grow up some time, though. (sigh)

  • Oh Shit don`t ever grow up, I mean understanding and dealing with your responsibilities is good but, Stay young at heart always.

  • Beautiful Natalie! On cold and rainy days, this song never ceases to warm the heart!

  • Goddess......

  • MUSICALLY SEXY, Beautiful and Breath-taking and also the music of course..

  • Just saw Natalie interviewed as part of the NYTimes series. I was front row center, a total thrill for me! She dropped a nugget by letting everyone there know that when she tried out for 10,000 Maniacs, someone had put lsd in her water. She said she was so high, she can't believe she chosen by the band!

  • Adore her !!!!! Another faultless performance.

  • Great song and sure they can call it the official video and Vevo soon will be hear (but the way I can get around Vevo adds but I can't tell you but it's not that hard)

but the original MTV was great too. Natalie had a little extra weight but still looked great but I guess they dropped her weighty video to the bottom of the sea without any trouble.

  • Wow what a wonderful and unique artiste. I love her totally. Terrific lyrics.

  • Her act of insecurity makes me love here more. I wonder if that's just an act. Love Natalie like I love Marilyn Monroe.

  • She sings with a distinctive, unique accent.

  • LONG LIVE MY MUSE !!!!!!

  • I love her... shes SO damn cute! with the voice of a goddess...

  • i love this woman -

  • Great song & clip. But the unplugged version will always be my favorite cuz it just has better energy & melody to it. I wish someone would post that here someday soon.

  • @vodude your SO right, the mtv unplugged will always stand as one of the best shows she gave us,and it was all caught on vid.love the book readings between some songs.! long live Natalie M. !

  • everyone sounds phenomenal in this video, except the very last second before it ends. listen to that again. it is strange

  • I love Natalie, but her wardrobe disturbs me.

  • Help , what is the video where Natalie was a whirling dervish on the stage . Played very often on MTV way back when

  • @dan508 It's called Mother, the War - a very eccentric performance

  • drummer is so famous

  • Dance lessons???

  • what kind of hippie shit is this? Reminds me of the little dive hippy bars on Mill Ave. in Tempe in the 80's

  • She grew up without a TV set in the house.

  • Need subtitles. She really should work on that speech impediment.

  • @jfabris I agree with you..Everything about this lady is perfect except how she articulates. Seventeen years ago when I first heard 10K singing Stockton Gala Days, it took me a minute or two to realise that this is in fact English..Nevertheless...I love the lady.

  • She really should work on that speech impediment

  • Enthusiastic crowd!

  • The musicians with her? Can't name any of them. Natalie was the talent in that band. Look at their career paths since she left them.

  • I see all this love for Natalie Merchant but what about the musicians with her?

  • Embalmed crowd!HAHA!!

  • She is flawless....

  • absolutely loved these guys....but i sure dont like watching her dance.

  • That crowd was embalmed.

  • natalie your quite the song bird, i just love ya... :)

  • Had a bit of a thing for Ms. Merchant back in the day even though she reminded me of a girl that wet her pants on the jungle gym when I was in 1st grade. In this video she sort of looks like an earthy housewife who climbed onstage for a dare. Michael Stipe once said that she "scared him" and I can see why, she seems very intense.

  • Really was into "In My Tribe" but the not-at-all-nuanced social commenting (manic depression, illiteracy, child abuse, wife abuse, environmentalism, dissing Los Angeles, etc.) started to rub me raw. When "Blind Man's Zoo" came out I bought it and almost vomited when I first heard that song "Please Forgive Us" or whatever it was when she took it upon herself to give a mea culpa for Iran-Contra. I really began to dislike the band after that, I think she stepped over the line.

  • @thebigsee you should stay home and take your soma

  • Natalie, Great voice ¡¡¡¡

  • This is such a great song...what other great story teller other than Natalie could write such a great pop song about someone having a really, REALLY, bad day....love it!

  • her words really capture what it's like to be depressed.

  • I'll bet she doesn't shave her legs or armpits.

  • @gitchigoomi no she probably has someone do it for her

  • @adans1234 Yeah, once a year with a weed whacker.

  • Natalie’s performance art really amplifies the manic depression theme of this song. When you only listen to the music, you pick up depression in the lyrics juxtaposed with the manic elements such as the beat, her up tempo vocals, and her cadence in the lyrics “Do I need someone here to scold me or do I need someone who'll grab and pull me out of this four poster dull torpor pulling downward”. But live, you get all that with her smiling and dancing. The manic elements really pop.

  • Very nice smile, but Granny Clampett wants her dress back.

  • great voice!! great smile!!! great personality!!! i love 10000 maniacs!!!!

  • A great talent and what appears to be a genuine and beautiful person. Glory to God for all the blessings He sends us every day.

  • Great tune!

  • Siciliana Irish....no wonder I absolutely adore her.... :)

  • I could spend an hour watching her dance; it is so free and natural. And don't get me started on her sex appeal. It seems like it would be such a pleasure to be in her company.

  • My girlfriend constantly played this and 'Strangelove' when I was 14. I was more of a RunDMC guy. But, I now love it. (and Depeche Mode).

  • I remember wondering as a kid if she sung in english and whether or not they were some foreign band.

  • I had the opportunity to see Natalie in concert and her voice is unique and superb. Thank you for posting this video, I agree she has a nice smile.

  • This song is from the early years when they were good ...

Great band until Natalie went to college and apparently majored in man-hating studies.

  • yep, video killed the radio star =D

    /seinfeld dance XD

  • she and the band are f'n awesome...now if she'd just give up the Elaine Benes dancing =/

  • Natalie has an unpretentious style that is refreshing in this age of self complacent would be divas. She's alluring despite her plain dress. She's elegant and beautiful even without makeup. Only one teeny weeny criticism: she dances like an uncoordinated monkey with severe cerebral palsy in the throes of an epileptic seizure. Besides that I think she's great.

  • @vegforlife555

Her crazy, twirling around like a mad girl is what got my attention? I love it.

  • I think Eddie Vedder copped her vocal style.

  • she has got a beautiful voice, she is very beautiful and sexy.

  • She has got a very beautiful voice, she also is very beautiful.

  • Thanks you for posting this song! Kudos!

  • This is great fun! I love how Natalie brings this optimistic upbeat attitude to a song that is actually very sad. What a dichotomy! She just can't help herself and that's part of the appeal. Oh, and the fact that she's just as cute as a damn button here!

  • Natalie on Jay Leno April 21, 2010. BE THERE !!

  • This Song introduced to the Group. I remember seeing the video where shes walking around and dancing in a room. Does anyone have the Official video ?

  • Yo I like this chick, she cracks me up, her dance moves are awesome ! Get Down Natalie... Aaaah ha ha, I love this chick

  • This is still my favorite 10,000 Maniacs and/or Natalie Merchant song...love it!

  • What a beautiful spirit!!

  • Great song! I love the way she dances :)

  • As seen in this video ... Natalie is a true Free Spirit Bohemian and an artist in the fullest sense of the word ... so excitingly and refreshing ....

  • @jaddison1112 I like the way you describe this amazing woman....where are these kind of women??? I want one..

  • Regardless of politics, this song is quite the statement on depression.

  • @potterkjp

I used to hear this song as about depression as well, especially when I suffered with bouts. no longer suffering, I hear this song in my head mostly when it's a cold rainy day and I don't want to get out from under the warm soft covers :)

  • @fraserkr I was in the Army in Alaska when my fellow soldiers and I saw them perform this on MTV or VH1. Imagine trying to get out of a sleeping bag in the woods when it is -20 F without windchill, but sometimes you've gotta or your bladder will explode.

  • What time signature is this song?, i hear 4/4 time but i also hear another faster time signature, especially at the beginning of the song.

  • lol her and Michael from REM

  • @royko22 My condolences on having revealed yourself as an insufferable right-wing nut.

  • That audience is comatose.

  • Geez while I did have appreciation for her (their) talent and actually owned (paid for it even, we did that back then!) their unplugged CD, Natalie Merchant was always the unsex symbol. Natty old grey dress, greasy hair...

In those days I wanted any or all at once of the girls in Vixen.

However don't let me destroy your dream, I understand tastes are different.

  • I love love love this CD!

  • Natalie is so inconceivably beautiful, with a phenomenal voice to match!

  • She always was a total cutie!...

  • Natalie sounds great live and I love the way she dances onstage. Thanks for posting this!

  • "Singer not bad" I have to agree.;) She is incredible, she was my crush as a teenager the minute I saw her!!

  • she is the greatast singer ever with the most beautiful voice . i cannot find a word how much i love her

  • like those drums, singer not too bad either...

  • great talent, awesome voice. i don't really enjoy watchin her..."dance" o.o

maybe Elaine Benes could have given her some lessons =)

  • LOLOL Elaine!

  • she dances like Ally Sheedy's character in The Breakfast Club

  • Her and Dido have such a natural beauty about them.

  • She has got to have the nicest smiles that I have ever seen....Wow...I love her..She's awsome....Without a doubt!!!

  • I see her smile and I get a HUGE....smile on my face :)

  • Nice song. Hate her politics and her career after this band. This was definitely the sweet spot for her career arc.

  • @gamccoy Her politics changed once she went solo? I don't think so. She's a "social justice" Liberal and has always been. I'm a right-wing conservative who leans middle-of-the-road, but I'm not so stupid as to ignore morality and wisdom from someone of another party.

Although this song isn't a good example of it, this lady's about as close to a walking, talking prophetess as you'll ever see.

  • Couldn't agree more...I fell in love with her when I was in college in the "Tribe" days, but later realized her political stance that she really became vocal about after she went solo (I know what you meant). The fascination ended for me after that. Still...she was so damn hot! and a real talent.
