@achsofromm ...in the camps my friend encountered... women had a high rate of being raped while going miles from their homes to gather wood. One reason they went in groups. It is easy to smile when you are safe (and being photographed), but conditions can change unexpectedly. (stock and posed photos tell a story of their own if one considers it.)
@achsofromm A big part of why Louise started doing this work is that she was helping promote traditional weaving in Western Africa, long before it had become popular again for "fair trade" exports, because she knew how valuable it was locally for income and culture. But the women spent so much time finding cooking fuel that they had little time to weave. So Louise decided to help address that problem. Surely the women are social in other ways.
Actually they are still $35 but when you sell your product through Gaiam you can expect a 300% mark up for any thing they put in their catalog. If they marketed and sold them through Wal-mart they would only be $25.
capatalist ripoff! ( proof) haha.. im so glad u made that point.. i guess cuz we have more money here we should pay more for it... like zonepricing...
It is not like somebody is forcing them to use this method at gunpoint. Secondly I am not sure the Alaska natives where full of happiness when they had nothing to eat for weeks because of bad hunting luck. After travelling in poor parts of India I do not have a romantic picture about primitive life. thanks for this video and I am really happy there is people with dedication !
its great in the summer months of alaska were we get 24 hours of daylight about 4 too 5 months out of the year. the eskimos have been using simmilar methods for many years before we westerners came too town for cooking there fish "skaw candy" as they call it
Yes, but you don't have a high sun angle that far north, so it is going to be a slower cooking process and you will not be able to achieve high temps. All the more reason to have the best ovens like a Solar Sun Oven where you can tilt the oven toward the sun without tilting the food. It helps that much of Alaska is treeless, so those aren't in the way. I remember "Eskimo ice cream" . It sure looked good but I think it is an acquired taste. It might be one of the reasons I turned vegetarian.
This is exactly my problem with teaching in the Caribbean Islands where there was very little firewood for cooking, the people were accustomed to their charcoal pots for cooking and they thought a cardboard stove covered with foil was crazy. Even after a few months of teaching, they simply patronized me and then were too embarassed in front of their family and friends to go on using the solar stove......
well it would be expensive, but if you want just microwaves from then sun, you would need a square meter filter and then a lens just below it, to focus on a container, but just using a large mirrored dish or a lens, can heat things up fast., much of the cost a the moment is making perfectly smooth dish mirrors or just the frame holding it up. solar ovens are cheaper & slow at times, but can be used in all seasons.

Why can you buy it for $35 in Mexico but in the USA it's $99?

@tcbink
As it is sold to poor community inhabitants, it sounds like there is a special price for them.
The minimum wage in Mexico is 1265 pesos per month, about 95-100 USD.
In those communities people often do not earn even the minimum.
I like the project, training the people and show them it works.
Regards from Mexico

I don't believe those women to be students of the Freudian school.
You missed the point by a mile.
