Interestingly, the Carnevale began in 1268(?) and the masks were allowed to be worn between October until Christmas and then from Dec. 26th until Shrove Tuesday, which is called Fat Tuesday during Mardi Gras, or the day before Ash Wednesday. The film takes place around Christmas. FWIW.

Just letting everyone know that the masked ball was filmed at Mentmore Towers which was built by Baron Mayer De Rothschild between 1852-54, and is still today owned by the Rothschild family (according to Wikipedia).
