The Mazda 2 just doesn't look like it's very stable on the highway compared with the Hyundai Accent or Honda Fit ... plus they both have more cargo space than this Mazda 2.
Bought this car about 3 months ago when my old car (1999 saturn sc2) unexpectedly(ish) died. I test drove a Fiesta, and I wasn't that impressed. I went and test drove the 2, and fell in love immediately. The inside of the 2 is MUCH more roomy than the Fiesta, and it feels better to drive in general. I'm a college student, so money is REALLY tight. My monthly payments with the 2 are low enough that I can manage well, and I only have to buy gas every two weeks or so because it's so fuel efficient.
the mazda 2 and fiesta are NOT built in the same factory! my mazda 2 was built and assembled in JAPAN, i dont think ford is building their cars in Japan. The interior of my 2 is far nicer, cleaner and easier to use than the fiesta. One last thing, i get an average of 33mpg with up to 40mpg highway, much more than all the reviews are reporting
@wrcjunkie The Fiesta is built in Mexico. I beg to differ on the nicer, cleaner and easier to use than the fiesta. But it's all a mater of preference.
Let's see. The Mazda 2 has 100hp and gets 33mpg. The more comfortable isport 3 has 148hp and gets 33mpg and has a much better ride. All the Mazda 2 needs is a lawnmower blade underneath it. This is Mazda's mistake. The stats prove it. There are 10 times as many 3's on the road.
Lets's see.. The dangerously small Mazda 2 has 100hp and gets 33mpg. The Mazda 3 sport sedan has 148hp and gets 33mpg. It is quieter and there are better deals on the price. All the Mazda 2 needs is a lawnmower blade underneath it. This is Mazda's fart in the wind.
The Mazda2 is hands down my favorite in this class.
I couldn't care less if it only has 100HP, because when you are driving around town it certainly doesn't feel like it. It is nimble and it is great to drive.
The Fiesta has more tech features and a nicer interior, but it also costs more and isn't nearly as fun to drive.
Old NA Miatas stock, were not fast at all. But because they handled extremely well, that more than made up for it. Same with the Mazda 2. It's not fast by a long stretch, but it handles well enough to keep things fun. And the shifter is supposebly very good as well, almost miata quality.
@Deetroiter I just bought the Mazda 2 after test driving the Honda Fit, Fiesta, Toyota Yaris, and Fiat 500. The Mazda 2 and Fiesta had the best shifter. They are really the same car, made in the same factory. I really liked the Fiat 500 also. Surprisingly the Fit felt like the worse to me.
The 2011 Mazda 2 is a car for smart people who knows that all you need in a car is to get around. The Mazda 2 can achieve 30 mpg. Thats Honda Civic Territory. All for just $14,425.
Checked this car out at the auto show. My top pick for a small hatch. Lower price tag, nicer style interior (in my opinion), and surprisingly roomy. I'm 5'9 170 and fit very comfortably up front and in back. Surprising amount of legroom in the backseat for such a tiny car. For about $1,000-$1500 more though, you can upgrade to the new '11 Hyundai Elantra, which is larger, 5mpg more efficient on the highway (40mpg, offsetting the extra cost over Mazda2), and has a richer, roomier interior.
it isn't all about speed folks. Something to be said for character : ) and that little car seems to have tons of it. You know what I mean if you've ever driven an old VW.
nice car. better looking than the fiesta, lighter as well. The fiesta gets better mileage with the AUTO transmission. the manual transmissions are about the same mpg
What do you expect ? This is a small car segment, it's supposed to be small, primary customer range are women and students who like to drive economically, they don't care about hp and 0-60 time it makes. You wanted the Fiesta, you got it, wanted the Mazda 2, you got it, If you want to drive fast, buy yourself a 3 MPS, or an RX-8. You laught at it, because you're not used to it, it's not your style of car in USA, and HUMMERS and ither USA cars are not accepted in EU. Don't like it, don't buy it.
Looks like a Crap-Mobile to Me. Where is the style and chrome and legroom? Good thing he is on a private road, cause if he was driving in real life and in the neigborhood I live in he would gotten a lot of comments re his manhood.
Maybe the Green Hornet will use it as an Escape-O-Mobile!
@TheLacavera I wouldn't say it was a throwback. I think what Mazda was trying to do was get their foot in the door of the "Hot Hatch" scene. I am not sure their marketing campaign is overly successful but if you picture a mazda speed body kit on here you would probably see the design interests. I think they were aiming for a sports tuner like you get with so many other hatch backs. Haven't driven this yet but I suspected a lot of what this guy said. Think mazda is on the right track.
@TheLacavera I was thinking that myself. Next to the Ford Fiesta, it's pretty unexeptional. Smaller, weaker motor that eats more fuel, fewer features. Although it is cheaper. Fiesta is rather pricey for a small 5-door.
honestly I have seen all the reviews and it always is in green...wtf...switch it up....this car isnt bad except the back looks plain boring and cheap, like a yaris, which we all know is junk. Not to mention 100hp is junk!
@zakyum I think it's a more balanced and natural color than the Fiesta green, like fresh vegetable sprouts. It might look just as good in the teal seen on 3 hatchbacks.
Best thing about this review was the cruise control info. Thanks.

They are not bad, rented one, bad points road noise and super hard suspension, the glovebox lid will chatter.
Good points, handling gearbox and steering.
Same base as the Ford Fiesta, which I prefer because it rides better

THIS CAR IS HORRIBLE HI - TENSILE IS WHAT BMX OR BIKE COMPANIES USE TO MAKE THEIR BEGGINER AND LOW END BIKES BECAUSE THEY CRACK EASILY.
SO THINK ABOUT THAT.

The Mazda2 is on a diet, which is why it's so light, and the engine is so weak. Therefore, this is a perfect car for people on a diet.
