  • Marv Cook had a good FBS and NFL career

  • I was 12 when this happened. It seems weird now, but back then not every Hawk game was on tv.

I was listening to Jim Zabel and was hugging and kissing my radio on that last play..I just remember jumping up and down and screaming in my room when Cook made that catch!

  • In 2010 they would have reviewed and probably give iowa ball on 6in with 6secs to play - they would have had a second chance for TD - glad they didnt reveiw plays in 1987...

  • @ASTHERADIOPLAYS nah he was in. His knee didn't go down til the ball was on the goal line. try again.

  • I had just moved from Iowa City to Chicago and was listening to this game on the radio - 1st time Iowa had won at Columbus in 30 yrs. I had always heard Bo Pelini(OSU safety) claim that Cook didnt get in - so I kept pausing this clip and you can clearly see a frane where his knee is down and the ball has not crossed the plane - so Pelini has a point. But you cant see it at regular speed & every play like this back then was always called a touchdown - so for 1987 it is a touchdown.

  • Marv Cook was also a pretty good NFL TE with the Patriots & Bears

  • I believe Earle bruce said Marv Cook and this game ended his tenure at Ohio State. He was fired a few days later.

  • I was at this game, in fact sitting in the end zone right in front of where the TD occurred. At the time, I couldn't believe it. One that the Buckeyes definitely let get away. But I remember they paid Iowa back in the exact same manner a few years later in Iowa City...a pass from Greg Frey to Bobbie Olive with just seconds left to win the game.

  • The camera angle was not the best, but the ball obviously broke the plain of the goal before his knee hit. There's a ref near the goal line. Give him the benefit of the doubt.

  • @cornerdell,

And, of course, this is before the era of instant replay - it might have been different if replay had been in the mix (and, I'm an Iowa fan).

  • @knightryderrwn I have a number of replays. He was in, clearly.

  • This play is what got Bruce fired the next week, just before they played Michigan.

  • it didn't look like he got in

  • What is the Hawkeys sports network?

  • KGAN in Cedar Rapids (and probably some other stations around the Midwest) used to carry an abbreviated version of that day's game on football Saturdays after the 10 o'clock news. If the game wasn't carried live on another station I'd usually tape the late night rebroadcast from Channel 2.

  • Did they stop doing that?

  • Yes, 1987 was the last year they did it, at least I think it was.

  • An interesting aside to this video -- at 0:23, #48 for Ohio State gets up and appears to complain to the referee about something (maybe that Cook's knee was down before he got into the end zone). Back then, he was known as Mark Pelini. These days, he's Bo Pelini, Nebraska's head coach.

  • This is the only Gene Claussen clip I am aware of. I worked for Gene in the late 70's. He was a true gentleman. This was a great time to be a Hawkeye....

  • Marv is my uncle we still talk about this today! One of the greatest plays in Hawkeye histroy

  • Your uncle is the best TE in Tecmo Super Bowl history. LOL...and you can tell him I said thanks for carrying Grogan and Marc Wilson!

  • Suckeyes got beat.

  • You put your left foot in

You take your left foot out

You put your left foot in

And you shake it all about

You do the Hokey-Pokey and you turn yourself around

    THAT'S WHAT IT ALL ABOUT!!!
