Thank you to everyone for the recent comments. I read them all even though I am not always able to respond individually. Your kind words mean the world!
It's NEVER easy to render the beauty and intricateness of Bjork's songs and you did an outstanding job. I'm in awe. Your mastery is pretty much flawless, you have talent, don't waste it.
this song is almost imposable to improve upon, even Death Cab was unable to match it's original splender, but you my friend, with your keyboard, have in my opinion come the closest.
The riddle gets solved and you push me up to this state of emergency..... Imagine how Joga must have felt whne she first heard that her friend had written this for her. Wow. and you do its such justice.
very impressive job. If you enjoy the abilities of a keyboard then perhaps you should look into a Yamaha electone, they are very expensive, but perhaps worth it, then you can have the great crisp sound that most keyboards can offer with the range of instrumentation that a piano can't offer. But I would like you to know that above all, brilliant job, I think even Bjork would be proud
Thank you, that is an excellent suggestion. I would love to upgrade to a new keyboard and amp and will certainly look into it when I have an opportunity (both time and money wise). It's one of those big decisions that will take a lot of time. For now, I have too much work. :-( Your comment is appreciated though. Best to you.
wow. i liked it. i guess you know that no cover is better than the original.. at least with bjork, but you really have some good stuff. id liked it better if the piano was not THAT acute
Thank you. Correct, instrumental covers aren't supposed to be intended to eclipse the originals. Bjork, Tori Amos, Stevie Nicks, and the other artists I play here are legendary. This is simply a celebration of the beautiful songcraft they have given us all.
Thanks. Funny coincidence, I was just playing this song today. Later on when I get more/better equipment I'll make an mp3 for this. I appreciate your feedback.
Would there be any way for you to make sheet music, or an arial video of your hands playing, or something? This song is absolutely incredible--I can't believe it, and I would really love to learn it.
yeah, no problem, do you know any other music by her? like army of me or hunter? it'd be cool to hear other stuff you know, in fact i think that is what i'll do, but yeah, good job
I have 10 or 11 Bjork videos and one I'm working on (hopefully will be up soon). When that one is finished, I'll make a Bjork playlist like the ones I have for Tori & Madonna. I'll let you know when it's ready.
This is my favorite bjork song ^.^ it has such a calming feeling to it and I believe you have def done the original song justice !! Well done and keep up the amazing covers!!
wow, this almost sound like disney music! and not in a bad way. listening to the same song thousands of times and now hearing only the chord and melody, makes me really hear the harmonies. It truly is amazingly beautiful.
Thank you. That is a great descriptor, I never thought of it that way. The way Bjork pieced this song together is exceptional. I tried to include as much of her ideas as possible because the combination of her thoughts is what makes this song so stunning.
Yes, I could hear her looped wailing in the ending, the one that's usually far back in the background. It's divine. I feel like crying for a bit, just thinking about the beauty.
Thank you. I put up a bunch of Bjork covers recently. The most experimental was It's Oh So Quiet. I appreciate all the feedback. I'm glad you shared your thoughts.
Wow.... I`m really impressed.... that`s simply brilliant, really. Where did you find the sheets?Or maybe you`ve done it by ear? I would be very gratful if you added a link with the sheets to the "info" please? Really beautiful, your performance has inspired me :))
Thank you. I learn everything by ear. I had a harder time when I was younger but recently, more and more things are opening up for me. Listening to Tori Amos has been good musical nutrition for me. :-)
Really, the more I hear it the more I like it, you're brilliant, you make this beautiful song even better, and that's difficult, my sincere congratulations.
Thank you. I listen to the song and look for the most important parts that give it its identity. Knowing chords and harmonics was really helpful. I had a great professor when I was in undergrad and she was a genius.
Soy de Pennsylvania, E.E.U.U. Vivo aqui todavia! Mi espanol es un poco pobrito pero trato de hablar tan mucho que sea posible! Gracias otra vez por tus escritos simpaticos. :-)
Fabulous! Your interpretation does bring a lot of the underlying stuff to the forefront on the "state of emergency" parts. So it can be hard to pick out that soaring part while listening. On the flip side though... it more like a state of emergency. LOL! :D
Thank you! There are four different things going on in Joga during the chorus. There's the melody, the string progression, the bass line, and the chord structure. I wanted to include them all because when I listen to Joga, it's the combination of all those things that makes it so wonderful--Bjork did a great job compiling & arranging it, so I didn't want to exclude any of her ideas. :-)
I guess that's one of the advantages with playing by ear :) You did an impressive job incorporating all those elements with only a keyboard.
I had a friend who would fast forward to the part corresponding to the 4 minute mark of this video and would only listen to that. He thought the rest of her song was boring!
I have only seen and heard live Bjork through recordings. I can't believe your friend would skip through Joga! The whole song is so good in my opinion. :-)
Thank you. It would be impossible to omit all outside sounds from a video, especially if you want to play something intense. With a direct line into PC however, it would transfer without any interference. The purpose of that would then be for mp3s, rather than videos. I may do that in the future, but for now I have a few more songs to film in this manner. Thanks for the feedback!
Thank you! I did have training. I had piano lessons when I was younger and had a bunch of music theory classes when I was at university. I used to do sight reading & sheet music when I was younger, when I had to, but now I do everything by ear. I'm glad you enjoyed it--Joga is such a well written song. I love many of Bjork's works. :-)
Good job wbarreguy!I think the beginning and the end are more 'soft' and 'deep' like Björk style... some parts in the middle I think the bass 'covers' the melody too much... but is just a 'positive critic opinion', eh?
Thanks! I'm not sure what you mean exactly about the bass, but it's definitely supposed to become gradually stronger throughout the second verse, second chorus, bridge, and final chorus. I always heard a lot of power in Joga; I never thought of it as a total ballad, but more of a builder. To each their own. :-) I appreciate the feedback. Take care!
Would be better if you had better sound recording ;)
