A rare gem. Amazing. I listen to Julia Hamari singing the Matthaeus Passion directed by K. Ritchter since 40 years, almost once every week. She has the most lovely alto voice i ever heard. Masterful.
unglaublich schöne und einfühlsame Darstellung von Julia Hamari-großartige Gesangskunst.Karl Richter begleitet sie mit dem Münchner Bachorchester auf unvergleichliche Weise.
The "studio recording" sounds so much better than the DVD. It's a bit disappointing a master like Richter has no control of his orchestra when played live. (listen to the record and you know what I mean)
This version is absolutely incredible... does anybody know which cd i can find this on... as for Hamari singing and Richter's approach? I can't seem to find it on i-tunes.
Holy god, this is so shockingly good. I wonder how many of us will ever get near this sort of standard? Loved it, straight to faves along with her Erbarme dich
zuckerkrank, I agree with you. And I think that the main problem of authentic musicians is not the form but the spirit - when I hear authentists, I don't feel that Bach's Passions are written about God and victory upon death, it looks simply like a funeral.
She have great throat indeed, she splendid soprano and this movement take my soul with her voice and we should don't forget to thank the great composer Mendelssohn who sacrifice of he's life to make this genius work public again at 1829
I think is wonderful how she sings. It looks that she really means what she is singing but just with her voice and face, without exagerations. And it needs mastering to manage properly.
Though is quite romantic this interpretation, is bright this way to play it due to its music and lyric content.
Also I think the video is very well directed/edited. Its rythm, focus changes... it flows with the piece.
Greetings from Rep. of Georgia! I'm deeply impressed! I want to say that Matthew passion has changed me... Thank you Bach, and thank you Richter. And Hamari, I LOVE her...I have been listening this part 10 times per day during last 10 days. Hamari impresses me, and makes me feel so deeply this music!
DieSonneSinkt, millions of thanks for posting this!
Although the orchestra is playing WAY too much romantic (hahaha c'est tellement drôle!), Hamari is a wonderful artist. She could still sing this now, but NO orchestra would be allowed to put so much vibrato in Bach in 2008! (Watch Richter contducting as he's ASKING for MORE VIBRATO it's insane hahaha).
You're french! great. I am too. Tu ne trouves pas qu'elle hache énormément les phrases? J'ai l'habitude d'écouter une version plus souple quoique tendue, vraiment subtile, plus douce. Là je peux pas. laborieux selon moi mais très beau timbre!
Yes, but I can't say I've heard hundreds, maybe 4 or 5. I like performances that capture the emotion of the piece more than any technical details of the music. Certainly those details add up to the overall experience, but the sadness in this performance, mainly in Hamari's voice is wonderful and the best I've heard.
For Hamari's voice, your right, she has a great voice. Maybe not suitable for that particular repertoire.
The versions of that aria on youtube aren't that great at all... You should listen on of the two version of Saint-Matthieu recorded by Philippe Herreweghe. It's just a question of style. I'm a musician, I'm a bit uptight about those things... ;o)
Is the one with Herreweghe with Andreas Scholl? Don't get me wrong, I love HIP performances, but just in terms of emotion, I found this sadder and more moving than Scholl's performance and the other 4 or 5 I heard. I usually pick HIP recordings because the orchestra sounds rougher and more intense, and a smaller orchestra is more suitable to the voice, but I also can't ignore the explosion of emotion produced in my head when I heard this as opposed to the others.
In the end music is a drug to me I suppose, I search for music that makes me feel that powerful burst of emotion, that almost paralyzes me and forces my attention only on feeling. I do it with many works, someone brought it up yesterday with Handel's Dixit Dominus. I am very loyal to 1 recording because it is the one that made me really have an this "explosion" of emotions in my brain. Does it make sense?
Sure, I understand you :) But should technical details such as the use of vibrato really stop you from enjoying this wonderful performance? I find I never really consider things like this during a performance, my thoughts become louder than the music!
Oh, vibrato is not an issue at all. It's more with the orchestra I have a problem with... It's not breathing enough for my taste, and plays waaaaay too romantic. Ah... the 60's!
Although the more I listen to HER, I like it more and more. You are convincing me... ;o)
This is awesome! I've never heard a better performance than this. She was a great contralto! Thank you DieSonneSinkt for posting this great piece of music!
