I always ask myself 'what was the KLM captain thinking?', more so when you realise he was KLM's chief training captain on the 747.
He took off without clearance in blinding fog with a potentially lost aircraft on the runway. Surely common sense says "don't do this", the truth is he'd probably done it countless times before and this time he just got unlucky.
@cheesemaster1000 you're not right. it was mainly the control tower's fault but if we must find a captain as the causer of the accident, both of the captains were pretty stupid. not only the klm captain. read it carefully.
@pharao707 that's true. My college professor mentioned the penalty for flying-over time in certein European countries in my Aviation Regulations class.
If he hadnt refuelled, this situation would not have arisen. He would have taken off 35 mins earlier and there wouldnt have been disaster as there would not have been fog
Thank you for posting this... I have always been intreged by the accident... I always imagined the take off was started from the west end of the runway, not the east. Now I imagine it in a different way. I have been to the site a few times... It's pretty eerie! Thanks again (and sorry for all the people who died)
A fine piece of animation -- thank you. My only query is why the KLM 747's refueling is described as "a fatal decision" -- isn't a fatal decision the KLM 747 captain's decision to take-off without permission ("We go")..?
@MultiFlail Oh, I see. Thanks for pointing out. I think I'd still say -the- fatal decision was the KLM captain's decision to take-off without permission, though.
another thing i don't, for the life of me, understand is why the dutch klm pilot was so emphatic and sure that the pan am was off the runway ??? He had absolutely no indication for this.
this pan am 747 was the worlds first passenger 747? never knew that. Although i blame the dutch pilot entirely for this tradegy, its clear that the pan am captain was aware that the klm had breached protocol and was taking off, so at 9.10 minutes (or 17.06.26 that time) when the pan am captain says "Lets get the hell out of here!" i don't understand why he did not turn the plane off the runway immediately and onto the grass?
the first problem that the visibility is low ..... also the radio problems

@sardanaphalus because if he hadnt refuelled the klm plane could have managed to fly over the pan am 747

The airline would have had to pay for the accommodation. Presumably put pressure on the captain not to upset his employer.

I´m from Tenerife.Indeed a nice work, although its ironic to use the word nice
regarding 1977.To be accurate the real position of both 747 when stationed
is as follow:put the KLM where you placed the Pan Am,and the Pan Am back
wards on a strip of the taxirunway
