I have been a guitarist for many years but would like to branch into keyboard and synthesis. However being a guitarist I know all too well that amplifiers colour the overall sound. Is there a way I can avoid this by using studio monitors instead? also I like the option of panning left/right or using ping pong delays. So one speaker isn't going to work for me. What can you suggest as a decent way to hook up my synth?
It is very hard to compress a song and tweak it the right way without a good pair of studio monitors. So yea u can use just a computer but u can't do anything after the fact you need a good computer to run good DAW's and good speakers to produce quality sound, o and a good sound card which goodbye didn't mention.
@Neosano Goodbyseptember is right. I mean don't get me wrong you can use just a computer for production. I mean I use nothing but a computer. I don't have any expensive hardware. However, in order for any decent music to come from the computer u must have a DAW first off. I use a bunch of DAW's such as Acid, Soundforge, Ableton and a few more. Now I will say this, you can find these products online for free if u know how to do it right.
@Neosano let me throw a little quote back in your face for a second.. it might sound familiar.. because you said it. (when were were talking about recording music)
"when recording music you do not need speakers at all. you plug it directly to your pc and record it on your pc.
Same thing for live shows: keyboard -> laptop -> any sound system"
...so please don't act like we weren't talking about recording.. cause on the bottom you clearly stated that it was the "same" live as it was recording
@Neosano so it would be fairly hard to begin to clip. Either way.. what your laptop cannot do (assuming you have the very basic laptop on the market)... is record professional sounding music. You do not have the RAM, Hard Drive or Processor Speed. I'm not doubting that you can record your little casio into your laptop.......
@Neosano "What I cannot do with my laptop?" Idk Neosano, I have no Idea what kind of laptop you have? But I can answer this question with one of your statements above. You said that you can make professional sounding recordings with the cheapest laptop you can find on the market, any keyboard, and a standard 1/4 trs cable... now I do understand I was talking about clipping up a few messages, and I apologize, because lower end keyboards aren't fully weighted or velocity sensitive...
@Neosano I dare you to tell any, and I mean ANY recording engineer that.. He will pat you on the head and try to hold back their laughter. There is a massive difference in sound. Between your keyboard DI into your laptop, a Keyboard going through MIDI into a laptop some piano VST, a keyboard going through an amp and miked up, and a live piano miked up. Those are just four examples, and all of those sound extremely different. And I'm telling you.. your way will sound the absolute worst.
@Neosano I'm trying to be an asshole.. but that statement is completely incorrect. When recording music.. not all people are going to listen to the music on PC speakers.. and you must not use PC speakers to make it more "accurate." Studio monitors with a flat frequency response is the BEST way to mix your songs.. because that is exactly what it sounds like without any frequency boosts or cuts that normal speakers or headphones provide. And most people that play live play their keyboards through
