Have you downloaded the "Instructions & Diagram"? If not, please do, or else you will not understand the sheet.
VCG is between, say, AiS hot shoe on top and the tripod screw socket on the bottom. Horizontal CG is between the front lens element and the back of the battery mounted on the camera.
hello cheesuwen I would if I could please give the exact weight (Camara, battery, wide angle reflector sony) and balance measures the steadicam merlin, pesos, arc size, etc. is that I have the same model of camera hdr SR12, RAYNOX 5050pro-Le, microphone ecm HGZ1 canyon, NP FH100, to compare with the measure that could achieve after many hours of balancing the steadicam merlin, please thanks again
Hi Could you give me some recommendations such as weight, angle, how to balance that when I walk with the steadicam merlin with long range hdr SR12 never this quiet, turns to one side only, please recommendations for the steadicam , recently the first use, greetings from South America, Peru
Hi luchinpb123, go to merlincookbook and download the "Instructions & Diagram". Carefully study it. Then download the "Magic Formula" interactive spreadsheets. You need to do weighing and measurement as per the instructions. If you do it properly according to the instructions, the results will be fantastic.
On top of that, you need to learn how to operate, ie the way you walk, the way you hold and control the gimbal, the way you boom etc. That has a lot to do with a smooth acquisition.
Yes, among the stabilizer I tried, the Merlin is so far the best for small setup. This reel is not the best example where I made a lot of mistakes, but it does give some hints compared to bare hand held.
Ah, i love how you shoot with the SR12. I bet you can do some great work with that thing and really come close to the pros. Great work with the steadicam too!!! I want one now:)
Actually, this is not a good example of the Merlin, my later videos are much better. The out door shot are swinging, I took the wide angle lens off and adjusted the fore-aft and side-side but forgotten to turn down the "Z" making the setup bottom heavy. Hence the inertia and the swing. When I realise it, it was too late to make adjustment or else I will miss the shot. Indoors are better but can be better.
This was a year ago and I think I have improved, hopefully...
The SR12 on board auto gain mic are quite good in terms of distortion. When sound level is to high, it will reduce the recording level to no distortion. Quality is another question. If you want high sound quality, you will need external sound recording.
Thanks, but I mean that IS NOT IN ENVIRONMENTAL PUTTING ANY external microphone or accessories are OFF MACHINE WHEN YOU ARE VERY STRONG SOUNDS AS ORCHESTRA LIVE IN OR THE LIKE, AS SOLUTION?
The hdr sr12 does not support a lot of noise, not if you passed it stops recording when there is an excessive decibels or volume, such as a live orchestra in a closed room.
Put it this way, The SR12 is a consumer grade camcorder, with auto gain mics on board. Even you use external mics, it will not be those pro XLR type. So for live recording, it wil not perform up to standard. But I think it is good enough, infact quite good, at consumer grade. You cannot compare them to ENG or EFP with pro mics.
Yes, but SR12 has a Sony AIS hot shoe, Micro's foot is for a standard cold shoe. So you need to buy or make your own Sony AIS to standard cold shoe adapter.
I am sorry, I really don't understand your question, but I will guess. I guess you are talking about on board video light on the SR12, correct? I use the light panel micro with the Sony AIS to standard cold shoe adapter. The weight is still managable by the Merlin. For ad hoc shot, it is difficult to use external lighting, reflector etc. For planned or directed shot, yes, those external lighting etc will used.
Raynox HD-5000PRO high definition and one that has no brand and leave distorsion is right at the edges, but I have another machine DCR SR100 but it's another thread where you put the 30mm adapter is distorted at the edges, it is true that q makes adapters are distortions at the edges?
The Raynox HD-5000PRO is a 0.5x wide angle and the 0.5x ratio causes the distortion. Depending on the camera's lens, normally I will not recommend wide more than 0.7x if you don't want distortion. 0.7x or wider, distortion is inevitable.
The set down adapter ring, although 2mm or lesser, exaggerate the distortion further. I always recommend to get wide conversion lens exactly the thread size of the camera so no adapters is required. Even with a 0.7x, if put on with a adapter ring, it can cause distortion. The further the conversion lens from the camera lens, the more distortion one will get.
Lord help me to decide not to buy wide angle, that you decided to buy these big blocks you have, please, I'm an amateur, I have a wide angle but I get out of the sides, leaving only the center of the crisp making, if not noticed this defect have some great angle q
Which wide angle you use? What brand and specifications? I tested a few and found Sony high grade VCL-HG0737 0.7x wideangle and Raynox HD-5050PRO High Definition 0.5x Wideangle the better ones. Sony 0.7x is without distortion. Raynox 0.5x is wider but slight distortion at the edge. Both with partial zoom and HD lines capability.
q mark camcorders have only used sony?, I have the hdr sr12 and the HDR SR7 The latter I think clearer, sharper image that comes hdr sr12, hdr SR7 is the oldest, the hdr sr12 no sound definition of sharpness especially open shots, you believed that.
I am sorry, I don't fully understand your question. But comparing the SR7 and SR12, if you render in HD, SR12 quality is better due to its hardware specification. SR7 is good but in certain aspects, SR12 is better, but not that much like sky and earth. It is only marginal. If both video done properly, I cannot tell the difference.
You want the blur intentionally or not? Intentionally is called shallow depth of field, this is a total different story, techniques and other equipments are needed. If not, zooming when using a wide angle will blur depends on the wide angle lens. Some don't allow zooming, some allow partial and some allow full zooming. How well it tracks focus depends on the quality of the wide angle.
The SR12 autofocus tracking is pretty good. In a good lighted environment, it tracks focus very good and blurring during panning or zooming rarely occurs. In a dimmed environment, it will not track as well as lighted environment. Zooming may still tracks focus pretty well but panning if too fast will loose focus. I usually use a video light in a dimmed environment. Hence, no out of focus problem. Also, the shooting way comes into play. Zooming is not much an issue, but panning too fast is.
I was using the Sony Wide Conversion Lens 0.7x VCL-E07A then. It is cheap and light. However, it suffers from a few things like lesser quality if final production is HD and inability to zoom. I have since upgraded to Sony high grade VCL-HG0737 0.7x wideangle and Raynox HD-5050PRO High Definition 0.5x Wideangle.

Steadicam I recommend that the merlin is very expensive. like you to place reflectors placed outside the Steadicam, reflectors weigh much.

Yes, the Steadicam is VERY expensive, but it is the best in is class and nothing comes near it.
