@ejeevika Not quite. Klaus Kinski's version of him was moving, repulsive, and pitiful. The book's Count is perfect: seductive, rapacious, predatory, gentlemanly, prideful, utterly evil.
You want to know what's funny? This movie came out in 1979 the same year Herzog remade Nosferatu. Bruno Ganz played the role of Jonathan Harker. Recently both of them appeared and did a scene together in the recent movie Unknown. I was watching that and thinking 'It's like Dracula and Harker are meeting in a completely different film!'. Of course they've done other things, but being a Dracula fan I just noticed that. Love this movie as well. Langella is such a great Dracula.
@balrog13571 What's also cool is that Klaus Kinski (who played Dracula in Herzog's remake) played Renfield in a low-budget adaptation of Dracula alongside Christopher Lee as Dracula.
Oh yeah I've seen that too. I personally liked it enough (or at least I liked it more than other films by Franco and more than Coppola's version or the really bad Dracula films) though my biggest complaint was how little Kinski had to do. He was trying, but the character was very limited in that version. Still it's interesting how it came full circle with him.
they prab showed this for 3-4 halloweens when I was a kid. Used to stay up late watch this and king kong 76' Memories....So glad I was an 80's kid and grew up with the best movies and music!
Even though Christopher Lee is unmatched as the best Dracula ever (IMO), I'd say Frank Langella gives the character a whole new depth. A far cry from Lee's mute, raw scariness, and Bela Lugosi's camp Eastern European-caricature, he is easily the most charming, smooth-talking Count (and, some will say, the most evil because of this)
Whoa... *runs off to watch.* I always thought of dracula as more suave and subtle than Bela Lugosi. (Don't get me wrong, his Dracula was iconic and genius and scary and wonderful. But this is so much truer to my vision of him.)
No problem with the performances and Frank Langella in the late 70's early 80's well, don't get me started, but why was it necessary to flip the names of the female characters.
Mina is the longer living heroine (Kate Nelligan's role). Lucy Westenra (not Van Helsing) is the early victim. It's odd what Hollywood changes---when it doesn't need to.
LG Sunny
Langella is one of the best looking people ever to grace the silver screen, and he's an excellent actor too! It surprises me how many people are unaware of him, but that's probably because he spent much of his career in the theater as opposed to the movies. No one ever made a sexier, more appealing Dracula! Of course these days he looks like what he is - a senior - and he has a distinguished appearance. But back in the day - wow! He was gorgeous.
This is what I feel; the version you grow up on is the one you ulitmately like the most. Langella's Dracula, as well as his Zorro, are the ones I grew up on, and the ones I favor til this very day. Same goes with music, fashion, etc...
There's so much that's unsaid but clear about the roles of each player. Mina the weak minded victim, Lucy 's strength is the cause of Drac's attraction, Johnathen Drac as rivals, and the Dr's dotty incompetence. The whole movies there in this one scene.
My favorite Dracula film, well, maybe Bram Staker's Dracula is better. But the scene with Mina the vampire underground scared me more than anything ever - for years!
This is a very poor version of Dracula in many ways; unless Transylvania is somewhere in the Mid-West USA I do not get his accent; he is not menacing or scary at all; but I guess this version is sexy so the ladies like it; Langella cannot "hang"-pun intended with Bela, Jack Palance, Christopher Lee, and most especially Louis Jourdan. Olivier is not good as Van Helsing but at least he is not the parody that Anthony Hopkins made of him in FF Coppla's Dracula--Stoker had little to do with it.
