Furthermore, Nickelodeon has a "retro Nick" station, which features their garbage shows from the 90's. I ask why don't we have a station feature 80's nick shows, like TMOG, even Maya The Bee. Even the cartoons aimed at girls were pretty hardcore. Remember Noozles, with the Koala's? DIdn't that show end with two dimentions about to collide with one another. Belle and Sebastian was a good one two. And Pinwheel.
Kudos, man. This cartoon, which I grew up with, also inspired be to explore Meso and South AMericas. Great show. Rumors are circulating that Jean Choplin is attempting to do an animated movie adaptation, as well as more episodes, picking up with the chilrens' quest across the Pacific.
The French did have Tao coming from Mu and having a talking parrot called Picchu. But in English "picchu" would be said "pic-ku" or "pick-you" so it was changed to Kokapetl. Mu would of sounded like "moo" or "mew". Unless Mu had lots of cows or cats around when it existed, this would be laughable. So it was changed to Hiva or Heva.
Some bad news here. Fabulous Films, rights holder for the English language version has removed all full episode Youtube videos for the English language version. You can still watch it in French on Youtube though as they don't have the rights for Canada or France.
This series is only very loosely based on the book "The King's Fifth" at best. Tao and his pet parrot is not in the book. But some do believe that the Tao back story is ripped off another Scott O'Dell book "The Valley Of The Dolphins". This book is about a girl stranded on an island all alone for 18 years with only a dog for company and a really dying wish to get off it. Still to this day, there has never been an official TV/movie verion of this book ever.
I WISH they would've left Pedro and Sancho out, if not for the comic relief. XD I really thought they were the most annoying characters ever created. XD
what an epic cartoon :) i also have a strange obsession with anciant south american culture and one of those mayan callenders my room lol good old ebay
"The Mysterious Cities of Gold" was on in the UK, too. It was very popular...so popular, in fact, that the presenter of the block of kids' shows the cartoon aired in wrote down the lyrics of the theme tune and mailed it to kids so that they could sing along with the theme tune at the beginning each week!
Hey. I love this show tremendously, and I'm always happy to see anyone else who loved it too. One thing comes to mind though. Your so-called "Mayan sun calendar" is AZTEC. Not Mayan. Different culture area, different civilization.
Haha! I watched Maya the Bee when I was small. =P Funny I find the English OP in this video--couldn't find it when I searched a while back. But yes, The Mysterious Cities of Gold is where it's at. I just finished it a few minutes ago and it is excellent! One of my favorite anime for sure.
The music is awesome! Too bad Haim Saban and Shuki Levy went on to do the Power Rangers themes! Those are catchy too, but not in a good way!
As for Tao, he is awesome, regardless of his clothes. Don't forget figuring out how to work the sunship rather quickly!
Lastly, I wish you had mentioned the original version of Tao being from Mu. Using another mysterious continent certainly would have made more sense for the story, rather than making one up!
Oh man, I just realized that "Mysterious Cities of Gold", which was before my time (I was born in 1987), was based on the novel "The King's Fifth" by Scott O'Dell, my favorite book when I was a kid.
Esteban was quite a lot older in the book though, like 16 or so.

Sorry for a mistake I made. The book I was trying to mention was " The Island Of The Blue Dolphins" not "The Valley Of The Dolphins".

Not true. Both cultures did have their own sun calendars which are somewhat similar in appearance, but mine is a Mayan version. Nice try.

I thought this was a cool show too. I'm a 30-year old who still loves cartoons that were on Nickelodeon in the 80s. Got a problem with that?
