I am inspired by this video especially with the breakdown. I'm no organist but, I have always wanted to learn at least some really good sounding chord such as the ones that he played. Thanks to all of the blessed musicians that have had positive input and have given me some other musical goals to achieve.
I found out you wrote the song Wonderful Change that Voices of Promise sings. Can you please tell me the words to the second verse of the song. I can't seem to figure it out.
@bigkeys1 Melvin has nothin to prove on that organ but he does have something to prove with that singing lol. lol nah im a organist and keyboardist so i kno how it is when u searching for a chord sometimes u have to hum the melody
Melvin Crispell is recording his own choir TESTIMONY live in Charlotte NC on July 19 2008. Search MC and Testimony here on youtube for more info or call 718 873 7374
Love the music, but maybe just a wee bit clarification on the difference between a gift and a talent. A talent is a natural ability which we may, or may not, use to glorify God. A gift, on the other hand, is a clearly defined spiritual equipping. No where does the Bible describe music making as a spiritual gift. It is, rather a talent which we choose to use for God's glory.
dude are u serious!!!!!!!!!!?????? typical church musician????!!! his style is whatever the song calls for...... u do know he played organ on the new tye right kid!?
To getinshape10960 you have a right to your opinion Mel is not trying to teach a gift and he by no means takes his gift for granted, he enjoys giving God glory in what he does, that being said it takes time and effort and expense to create videos to help people that enjoy his organ sound/style and would like to sound like him.... Dont hate Mel has worked hard for a very long time to perfect his craft
HEs a BEASt...a classic....and GOd gives gifts to glorify him...but as a means of making a living as well....just becasue hes a MAN of GOD dont mean he has to be poor...if this is the gift GOD allows him to use....why should GOD allow for him to use it as a means of surviving as well...but thats beside the point....he wrote V.O.P. (Voices of Promise) young peoeple on fire for GOD and on fire on their CD....check them out
To "getinshape10960" and others who don't think that Ministers of Music should charge a fee for their services. i.e. teaching materials. You are soo off base, those of us who labor in the ministry are HAPPY to bless a man of God who can help us to perfect our gifts. If it's not for you fine, but don't knock those of us who wish to learn from this talented man of God.
First of all you need to stop pretending that you are trying to learn something. You don't learn a gift and you don't teach a gift it is given to you from GOD. I don't even know why I'm enertaining you
Read and be careful... One who relys on his own abilities and think not of God is a fake. Why would a man charge to teach a gift if the gift is given to him from God. Maybe the gift is not a gift it is a self taught leson
speakin of explainin chords,,,some notes can be flat to one and a sharp to another,,and theres inverting,,and sometimes just moving one finger can give a chord a totally differnt value..thats why its hard to watch these for me n understand,, im looking for complete chord changes and that may not always be the case..its all about effect,,and to hear some of these chord by themselves may sound off..but put in the right progression sounds awsome..
Of most of the organists that Ive seen and admired Melvin has such a *Light* touch to his playing. It tasty, just enough placed at the right time to make it funky. Not too much not too little. As a pianist/organist I need to rethink my playing style after seeing his stuff and some of these others on You tube.
I'm Saved Written By: Jack Scholfield in 1911 I've found a Friend, who is all to me, His love is ever true; I love to tell how He lifted me And what His grace can do for you. Refrain Saved by His power divine, Saved to new life sublime! Life now is sweet and my joy is complete, For I'm saved, saved, saved!
um crispell is one of the best in gospel, $49 is a bargain. He played for james hall and Hezekiah and many others, respect the greats! Who have you played for?
he's on the same level as kevin bond and if you don't know who that is then you shouldn't even play gospel, Crispell is the truth on the b3. He's the reason there is a James Hall or a H Walker. Listen to the first James hall worship and praise cd and you will understand
Never heard of any of them. I don't really follow the gospel organ world though, I'm a classical organist--I don't play gospel. I still stand by the fact that this "instructional" video isn't worth $50. Especially since this guy doesn't know how to properly explain things.
Oh I love the wild unorthodox explaining of Chords: its a Bb minor with an F# in the Bass, usually known as a Gb major 7, but you are right it doesn't matter which way you explain your coocking ,it delvers the right color of sound. Great go with your EAR.
I wish some of the young musicaian would take lessons from this clip. They need to know sipmle Gospel chords for our regular Sunday morning services. Please ya'll, get back to basics. You can play the jazz @ the show, not Church. The Bishop
I live in Jacksonville, FL and I've been following the great musicianship and skills of Melvin and his wife for about 7 or 8 yrs. Man their music is unique and whats needed for this generation. LOVE IT!!!!
Melvin and John Peters were buggin out at James Hall's reunion...tryin to remember thet material... so fun to watch... One thing for sure...melvin is an awesome composer....man the stuff he writes is so anointed..love it.. God bless you brother!! His wife's CD is so hot...some Cd's never get boring....such is the case...
This is nice. He can really play, but his knowledge of music makes him sound "musical ignorant". Would love to help him know what he's playing and call chords correct. C,Db,F,Ab w/a Bb in the bass is called a Bb minor 9.

i love his playing, BUT he's explaining the theory ALL wrong. that chord was a Eb minor 6th.
he just split it up because he already played the root on the btm. Those subs he does for
plain sounding songs are dope tho.
