I too loved watching Jeremy Brett and thought he was irreplaceable-- until I saw the extraordinary Benedict Cumberbatch step smoothly into the role and bring Holmes into the 21st century without a hitch. If you haven't seen the new series, by all means buy/rent the DVD. You'll be amazed at Sherlock Holmes 2.0!

Of course, time doesn't stop when a man dies, and there are new talents. B.Cumberbacht is one of them, and I think Jeremy, were he alive, would not be jealous and would praise him. But I find very sad to consider people as "replaceable", to forget one's former loves and rush towards new ones. To me, J.B is not replaceable, and will not be replaced as far as I'm concerned, though I appreciate new talented actors.

I truly wish I could've told Mr.Brett how very perfect his Holmes was, and still is, for those that love the stories and shows. Every other, no matter how superb the actor, seems a mere shadow in comparison, while Mr. Brett grasped Holmes in entirety.

you know, oddly enough my want to learn and read about Sherlock holmes turned up AFTER I saw the movie xDD and it was only after I'd read the stories that I realized what crap the movie truly was! and even though Robert downy jr. is GORGEOUS, unfortunately he will never play my Sherlock Holmes like Jeremy Brett does... :)

even for those of of fortunate to remember other Holmes, there was no one who became the epitome of Sherlock Holmes. Brett was Holmes. When I read my first Holmes (Hound of the Baskervilles on my fathers recoomendation who read it in 1927), I envisioned Holmes it was Brett I saw. Now downy is going to "re-invent" him. God help us!

Basil Rathbone was positively AWFUL (Not as bad as Robert Downey Jr., though.).

He made up his own damn lines half the time, was a total primadonna, and their "Watson" was a bumbling idiot!
