  • Done 1.38 and killed myself in the process.

  • i got 1:44 and ive been rowing for 2 months

  • Wow, look at the announcer right behind him. I would have turned around and punched that guy in the face.

  • this not the world record myself and many of my team mates can go sub 1:15.5 500meter split the record is 1:10.5 split. Still very good job man keep up the good work

  • @sidrenwada no, no you don't.. and world record isn't 1:10.5, it's 1:14. something,

  • @srsly101 check you stats bud the record it 1:10.5 and all my friends and i on the canadian national team can easy do 1:15's

  • @sidrenwada Where would i find it? the concept 2 world records page doesn't have a 500m record.. kudos to you's all if it's true though, which it could possibly be as 1:15 doesn't sound too unreasonable in hindsight.

  • @sidrenwada I doubt someone on a national team would be bragging on youtube...oh and btw I'm totally on a national team somewhere and I do 0:53 on a bad day, sometimes I've been known to do the whole 500m in my starting stroke....

  • @sidrenwada record is 1:13.8... and why are you trying to impress people with a 500m score? They don't mean shit! 2k ergs are the only real test

  • @gabrielevans999 no argument there man

  • this not the world record myself and many of my team mates can go sub 1:15.5 500meter split the record is 1:10.5 split. Still very good job man keep up the work

  • cmon the guy on the right isnt even pulling hard... what kind of competition is this?

  • yeah the guy to the right of him seemed to be struggling quite a bit

  • Lmao at Rob's legs compared to the guys legs to his right :P

  • damn, my lowest is a 1:33 average. I guess I'm only 15 so I can't expect better but damn.

  • that long for 500m seems more like a 1000m time

  • @biglouy my bad its been awhile since i was on an erg haha i forget it gives avg 100m split

  • @biglouy no it doesnt.... it gives a 500m split

  • @biglouy Thats bullshit, you dont know shit about rowing if you say thats a 1000 meter time !

  • @themanthatrules1 I said my bad and corrected myself

  • nice send me the link yea? and yea im 15 so thats probs why mine aint so good compared :P

  • what was his average split... lol... rowing humor!

  • this guy could eat the guys rowing next to him for breakfast

  • Funniest thing, after he finishes, the dude to his left gets bumped by the media people while he is still finishing his piece.

  • who the hell are those other kids? just there to make him look good? lol

  • That's amazing, Iv'e never tried doing a 500m max but i can pull about 1:17 max, age 17. So i guess i could do a 500 in say 1:20. Is this still the WR?

  • @mrajsma01 You are wrong. hitting a 1:17 low split doesn't mean you can hold "roughly a 1:20" 500 meter. I can hit a 1:14 low on my 100 meter sprint, but on a 500 meter my best is 1:25

  • love the fact that theres a massive guy in the middle pulling the erg to bits and to the right and left of him are absolute knobs

  • That's amazing. I am in crap shape so I do tabata rowing and i can only go down to 1:30 lol. He has some power and amazing endurance.

  • @FaceAfro You're in crap shape, so you decide to do Tabata training... you mad?

  • @Gibz101 oh i can do it fine, im just not in the best shape is all... im in crap shape compared to the fitness freaks

  • why is he rowing against kindergarteners

  • heilige scheiße!

  • that dude on the right is "climbing the mountain" a bit

  • hahaha look at the kid to the right of him! so much smaller

  • at what weight

  • I bet this guy will freaking crash big time in a 2000 meter race. And I mean come on look at his size, he is too heavy to row........

  • @nounynkoukou dude, he has the 2000 metre world record aswell, and the 100 meter, and the 5000 meter, and the 6000 meter, so yeaaa

  • @flabfoot31 R U SERIOUS ???? send me a link or smthing...

  • @flabfoot31 not true

  • hahaha look at everyone else they're soo shit

  • I remember my rowing days the ergo is the best fitness machine ever. It can not be broken. It destroys you.

  • Love the fact that there's a girl walking round offering the use of a bucket afterwards.

    "Vomit, sir?"

  • @ruud76 Wish a nice girl did that at my boat club!

  • Does anyone ever have a problem with the concept 2 moving around in the gym? Not sure if my techniques just shocking, but every time i push hard with my legs the machine shifts forward and its so annoying having to stop and get back in line.

I can do 500m in 90seconds and im only about 80kg so its not like im a monster strength wise :/

  • @mattjones969

Crank up the resistance and you'll slow down right quickly.

That'll keep it from jumping about.

If that's not enough, put some sandbags over the rubberfeet so they get more traction on the floor.

  • @Jesus45U I always have the resistance at 10 :( will the gym have sandbags about?

  • @mattjones969

Some training excersises uses sandbags, so they might.

And if you are still jumping about at highest resistance setting, perhaps you are working with too sudden movements. Smoothness will often have the rig be more .. uhm .. stationary ?

I hope I'm making sense here.

  • @Jesus45U yea you make perfect sense, i think ive now realised im using my arms slightly at the start of the stroke, when it should be all leg until im further back? Maybe thats enough to nudge it forward

  • All you guys suck. I just got a :28 500m and im only 11 years old and im black (so i use my dick for more momentum)

  • @crkjrk56 :D

  • one of my high school men came 5 seconds short of this on a test...

  • My best time is 58 seconds dead, done in my bright green mankini.

  • meathead

  • man all the people posting here are fast my fastest time was only 1:45 but i'm only 166cm and weigh only 56 kg(I'm 14 and asian)

  • @CJ95ZZ so what if ur Asian? Fair enough mentioning the age but what does being Asian matter? I know many came over in the banana boats, maybe that gives you an unfair advantage.

  • @JacobsJaffa u forgot most asians arent like europeans or americans,at teens most are around my size while MOST caucasians teens my age would be roughly 5 to 10 cm taller and weigh roughly 10 kilos more.AND what the hell with the bannana boats

  • @JacobsJaffa Hahahahaha xD

  • Makes it look absolutely effortless...

  • Inspiring I just started rowing a coupleof months ago and just had my best time of 1:30 for 500 m. It is really addicting

  • I really hate when people brag and are arrogant about their times on youtube, honestly put up or shutup. Just upload a video proving it and we'll believe you, just writing down your time and being all high and mighty is really obnoxious and arrogant.

  • @levee343 I agree. However I have a 20 second 2k time. lol.

  • Holy shit avrage of 1:15 my best is 1:14 Jesus...

  • @darkboy456 prove it, send me a link to a vid of you doing a 1:14 then ill believe you. and if you dont reply i will assume that you cant, simple :)

  • @MrRoflgasmic

Whats to prove i did the split like for 2 strokes...

If you really want i could film it..

    Might acualy do 1:13 now...

  • @darkboy456 yea, like im not rajin im just interested :L yea do put up a film? how old are you to do that? my lowest i think is 1:26

  • @MrRoflgasmic

    Il try recording it :P

    Im 16

    17 next week

  • is 1m 30s any good? consider the fact i did that over a year ago, after sitting around doing nothing for 6 months before hand?

thinking about joining my uni rowing team, but dont want to be average

  • @mattjones969 do 2k, with time like this on splits, and this will be very good. And join your uni team

  • this guy is racing with lightweights

why aint we surprised he won

  • why that guy is racing with lightweights ?

  • In college I pulled a 1:17 500m, I didn't realize it was that good.... got the readout down to 1:07 at the start.

  • Is that a puke bucket the lady was holding?

  • ah, i suppose that is reasonable, given a 500m, but that would be nuts on the water

  • his ending rate was 48

    what the fuck?

  • My coach got his split down to a 1 and held that the whole time.

  • does he also have two cocks ironarrow3y?

  • so, he's 16 secs faster than the world record?

I think, by definition of "world record", you're talking absolute shit.

  • Well there is no way of convincing you then whatever, no way this is the best dude in the world, take that into consideration.

  • i cant even hit a split that low let alone hold for 500m

  • Do you know how hard a sprint like that is on the body? To try to get an idea just look at the gal with the bucket.

  • poor guy on the right ahahha he is struggling

  • Rowing is one of the worlds most physically demanding sports behind swimming and boxing i think, but the best people in rowing either indoor or outdoor have t be some of the worlds most mentally tough by far

  • i dont know if you can put it behind any sport, rowin is ruthless. Yea im from petone

  • biggest quad ive ever seen

  • what resistance level are they on?

  • probably 10.

  • these machines don't technically have resistance levels, the dial on the side only slightly adjusts how hard the stroke is depending on your preferred stroke rate, but in these races they generally keep it at around 4, maybe lower for a very short sprint like this one

  • The adjustment lever varies the size of the air vents through to the flywheel. The bigger the air vent, the more resistance. That's why it makes the stroke feel harder at a given stroke rate. The setting is personal to each rower, for sprints most people tend to set it higher than normal. A setting of 6-8 is not uncommon for the 500m and for the shorter 100m, many people set it to 10?

  • yeah on the machines yu can set an actual drag factor im not suire how its measured buht the standard for all testing is at 130 drag for 2km ergs

  • actually for a short sprint they would keep it at a higher resistance

  • im stack at 7.20 in 2km. Im 98kg, 193cm, 32Y, training the last 3 months, but i find impossible to beat the 7 min barrier. How can these guys do 2km in 6min? Technique perhaps too.

  • Raw, raw fitness and power. It requires exponentially more power to lower your time the lower you go. When in doubt, erg more!

  • Do lots of long, low rate ergs and work on your technique.

  • cheers guys

@ChrisBrett2K: Thanks for this tip it has helped me a lot, I also include more power, hence 'long and more powerful strokes', managed a PB 3.23 for 1000m based on this. I also realised that 'controlled breathing' can play its role too...rowing is a painful game, but I like to push body to the limit

  • It's all in your head!

    My 2k is 7.20 I'm 20Y, 74kg and 183cm.

Just put pain away, you can do it.

  • u've proved nothing by saying that

  • im a girl and i've under 7:20 lol

  • omg the guy on the right is awful! needs to learn how to erg correctly

  • holy shit!!! my lowest split is only 1:25!!

  • every1 apart from Rob Smith were shit as fuck

  • oh man this guys a freak, he's like Rob Waddell just over short distance.. i can do a 1:28 for a 500 im nearli 17. I hold 137 for a 2k and im not sure what i do for 1km havnt done 1 for a while.

  • thats pretty good my 2k was around the same at your age im 19 now and I can do 6:12 for 2k

  • oh wicked, where are yu rowing from? were a really small clu in NZ hopefully my times will get down to around the 620 mark this season, would be great just recovering froma broken shoulder is making it a long start to the season but goin well

  • the guy on the right is fucking terrible LOL

  • the guy to the right is shit

  • What dampner did you use,very impressive,i do 1:30 at 47yrs old.

This has inspired me to see fast i can get.

It's very difficult to find any training regimes for the 500mtr any tips on the best way to train?

  • That's very impressive. My best ever was 1.19.

What was the lowest you took it during that race?

Impressive legs, you can really see it's mostly legwork that does it.

  • straight dirty

  • haha, wtff!!!!!?!?!?! BEAST MODE!

  • Lol, look at the guy on the right of the screen, his technique is shit, how did he get to any competition at all? Still probably faster than me though, I'm much better at 20 and 40 min ergs ;)

  • You understand that he did not take it down to 1:15; rather, he held a 1:15 average for 500 meters which is a great accomplishment. I can get to a 1:19 and I'm sixteen, however, I can only do this for 100 meters and then I die back up to a 1:30~1:40....

  • I do 1:35 on 500 and 1:39 on 1k and im only 14 idk if thats good but im the best in my club (of cadets) im 187cm and 77kg's

  • thats pretty good at your age i was 185cm 74kg and i did 1:28 for 500m and 1:39avg for 1000m. I do 6:12 for 2k now and im 191cm and 93kg. Good luck with your rowing your times are promising but you gotta work your arse off if you wanna make it

  • bullshit you pull a 6:12. a 6:12 is around a 1:32. So how come you can only pull 1:39 for 1k but pull a 1:32 for 2k?

    GTFO

  • 1:39 was when i was lightweight and 14, read it properly before you reply. And 6:12 is a 1:33 avg

  • wow, this guy just mathematicowned axel

haha, bser, go find an ego boost elsewhere =p

    go soygamer! :D

  • Im 15 years old and 75 kg - my speed 1:31 :P

  • im j13 and my 500 is 1:39.7 my pb

  • im a freshman at 15 and i row a 1:35 for a 500 and a 6:55 2k...

i want to go jr nationals so bad

  • thats a pretty quick 2k but an average 500m but 500 doesnt really matter. Good shit!

  • This record was broken in Dec '08, by Rob Smith again (me). The new time is 1min 14.4sec. Video is here on Youtube of course!

  • yea,yea can yuo row a 2k race with Niksa Skelin

  • No, Nika is too fast over 2k for me, but why should I have to row 2k at all, let alone against any particular person? Does an Olympic sprinter have to run the 1500m as well, just to "prove he can really run"?

  • WOW HE IS AMAZING. On 500m i need a 1:55 . WOW

  • im 40kg and i can do it in 1.52 which is pretty good but wow, his legs r massive

  • i'm a year older than you ( assuming by your name ) and weigh the same but i only get like 2.10 maybe 20 ish :P

    (I'm a cox)

  • bet you i could whip him on the water doing a 2k

  • Beast has big legs!

Im 75kg and i do a 1.28 and that was a big effort!

500m not really a big goal for rowers though, 2k, 5k and 30 mins much more important.

  • The guy broke the world record, surely he doesn't need to race against scrawny teenagers to boost his ego.

  • I've recently got in to sprint rowing.

Did a 15 second 100m, 32 second 200m and 1.28 for the 500m. I have no interest in doing 2000m, as it's too much cardio for my goals.

I'm hoping to get my 500 time down to below 1.25

Well done on this record, Rob. It's really inspiring stuff.

  • nice work (Y)

    well

my best for 500m is 1.38

    so yeahhh.....

    im 14 years old though.

  • I'm in my first year of rowing and i did a 1:35 and i was happy with that

  • I'm sorry mate, I don't believe that 1:09 claim. It's hard enough doing under 1:30 without even mentioning under 1:15.9.

  • totally agree with you... don't believe him at all

  • his quads are like tree trunks.....

  • Half slide cheater

  • drag is probably at 130 or 135

    so at 5 (line above)

  • is this dude even a rower? or does he just do ergs

  • could someone tell me what level on the row machines are these races are set at? thanx

  • not bad at all :D i'm 16 and doing 1:23 but i need to train more... much more...

  • i do 1:37 and i'm 15 and a half

  • that sucks, i know J14's who can do that

  • haha the power necessary to lower your split goes up exponentially as you get lower. it sucks. 1:37 is about 400 watts-ish. 1:15.9 is probably about 800.

  • the kid on the right sucks

  • I just thought the same. Is this paralympics?

  • *Supposed to the boy on the right*

  • yeah he does

  • What does he pull for 2k?

  • i love how they almost knock the other competitor over to get next to Rob before the other competitors were even finished the race

  • My god, I can't even dream of a 1:15.9 LP myself, never mind that as a 500m split time!

  • i do this everyday :D

    jk my god i wish

  • He died a bit at the end...

Of course, I would too if I ever pulled 1:15.9 for 500m!

  • damn he's fast

  • Rob is my gym instructor at school - Hurstpierpint college he's a ledgend.

  • i can reach 1.18.6

  • I'm tired and out of breath just looking at him. Interesting he doesn't do full slide. I saw the person to the left of him really try to achieve that full slide. His bulk is where its at. That was all about muscle and technique.

  • 6th Dec 2008, Rob beat this record in 1:14.4s at Cardiff again - wow!

  • He broke the World Record again this year...

I witnessed it with my own eyes.

    It was seriously amazing.

  • Holy cow, I can't even reach that speed, let alone maintain it for 75s :/

  • what level do these guys have it on?

  • This guys form is good considering the rates and that he is pulling so hard. Does he win any proper rowing races (on the water)?

  • i got 1.21,9. maybe it sounds good, but i did alot of consept rowing. those sec's at the end are extremly hard. if you want to get good at this distance, you should do exercises like legpress, squats, deadlifts, and weighted rowing. Allso interval training (dont know if its called that in english :). 5x4 x100meter with 3-4 mins breaks. Just make the motion flawless before you push uself to max :)

  • the guy next to him is shithouse

  • that guy has some serious quads, amazing haha

  • 2nd attempt 1.42. got alot of improving to do!

  • Ok lets see a video of that either your lying or your rediculously ripped and can pull extremely hard.

  • i agree, don't belive you somehow mate?

  • what! u dont believe me? Im not that ripped im about 6 foot and about 80kg. Play a lot of rugby and im quite fit. Ill take a pic of the time and send it u if i really must, but i aint gonna let someone film me in the middle of my uni gym, id look like a right t*wat

  • Lol yea right, you can get anyone to row and then take a pic, you might as well have no proof at all.

  • ffs mate :| i dont really care if u believe me or not, I know what time I got and why would I lie, thats just cheating myself :S

Im not doing it to look big, that guys got 1m 16s so it doesnt exactly make me look good does it

  • lol exactly, 1:16 is shit loads harder than 1:30

  • i consider myself to be in great shape but i tried this for the first time yesterday and only managed 1:46. was gutted!

  • the people he's racing suck asshole

  • i'm 16 y old and my personal best is 1.24

  • make a vid because this i would like to see
