I'm so glad this was chosen for the Royal Wedding! I doubt I would have been exposed to it if it hadn't. It's become one of my favorite songs for my personal worship. I love the use of scripture. Just beautiful.
As with most of John Rutter's music, I often think it's not quite going to work, at first, but when I come to know it, it all flows perfectly. This piece is exquisite, and I hope I get a chance to sing it with my choir.
This song means a lot to me, I heared it one day after I got the result of having cancer... I was so touched by the melody and lyrics... and I was thinking that when I get married to my boyfriend that I would want to have this played on my wedding day. I had not told my boyfriend at that time about my cancer, a couple of days later when I told him, he asked me to marry him. We are getting marriend in one week and we will have this song at the end of our ceremony. The song means everything to us!
This piece is a beast. I understand that John Rutter has not made any move to publish it yet, although I'm sure he will eventually once enough hype has been made.
Whereas I do not wish to accuse John Rutter of downright plagiarism, the first seven notes DO resemble Disney´s "Beauty and the Beast". Could it be a case of sub-conscious association or does he see a parallel to the characters in the film? 8<)
Singing and directing John Rutter's compositions is an absolute delight! Bravo! Bravo! This is by far one of John's best works. Listening with awe!! Marvelous!!
Nice :) I notice it's available on spotify too with even better audio quality. I'm not a religious guy, nor a royalist, but I like moving music, so I like this :)
My only negative comment on the entire wedding was this piece of music. I adored every other choice. The ceremony was beautiful and moving. It was just sad that Rutter was compose this psalm setting. I have no complaint about the psalm either by the way. Rutter is just a second rate composer. Compare this piece to the ubi caritas arrangement also on utube. THAT IS an example of a British (Welsh) composer who should be held up for celebration
@michaelgc53 I think John Rutter would be the first to agree with your sentiments (albeit expressed in a way I'd not) as to his stature when compared with the Pantheon of humanity's greatest composers. He's emphatically not "second-rate" however. In terms of musical communication, he can strike heart and mind like a thunderbolt, as he did here. Moreover, his music appeals to "ordinary" people whose experience of "classical" music might have been limited, or even hostile. That's a true musician.
@UltimateGuitarist17 man i totally agree with you man. Music seriously is the universal language, I could hear this all day and never get bored of it. Love choir's. beautiful music.
Does just about evry1 else find this as breathtakingly beautiful as I do? This is truely the most beautiful thing I have evr heard in my life. I keep the whole wedding on my dvr just so that I can listen to these boys sing. Absolutely incredible! Wish I could have heard it live at the wedding! :( 1 can only dream!
This is so trite! Sounds like it was written for a new Disney animated film. It does not compare with historic catalog of past British choral literature. Loved the Ubi Caritas de Amore.
@michaelgc53 It's Psalm 118 so blame whoever wrote the Psalm (and then the highly acclaimed John Rutter for the arrangement) if you must be curmudgeonly about it.
The only thing that spoiled this beautiful day was the (thankfully small) number of whingers who seemed to go out of their way to find something to dislike about it...and then let everyone know.
This song is so beautiful I cannot stop listening to it over & over again. I heard it watching the Royal Wedding and I vowed to learn it and play in my Yamaha Clavinova. Thank you so much for posting it.
I just fell in love with the song when I heard it during the ceremony. And by the way, the boy at 1:40 to 4:51 looks like the young Prince William. :)
@jenfroe8806 They are "Gentlemen of Her Majesty´s Chapel Royal, St James´ Palace, London", professional singers who sing on Sunday mornings in the chapel of St James´ Palace, where several members of the Royal Family have lived/live. The boys in red and gold tunics are also in this choir. They always sing at Royal weddings, funerals and coronations. I´m an ex-member.
@dolphins1298 these children go to special music schools. the kids in white go to 1, the kids in red to another. but both emphasize music. the Westminster Abbey Choir children perform 6 days a week at regular services, and the Chapel Royal Choir kids also perform, but at 2 different churches.
I was and still am absolutely amazed by this stunning song and I just wonder all the time...do you think there´s any chance to get the sheet music...??
After Silence, That which comes nearest to expressing the inexpressible is Music... From the very first beautiful wave of music that passes to the last, once again John Rutter shows his amazing talent. Wonderful Choir, Wonderful occasion and in the most Wonderful building.......In the House of The Lord.
Amidst this soul-uplifting piece, I must add that I was rather touched by Lord Chancellor Kenneth Clarke's evident sensitivity as the camera picked him out - a veteran British politician of immense stature, integrity and humanity.
@vidzvoyeur somewhat. the event was so big and costly that many different media groups within countries teamed up to provide coverage. so yeah, the BBC made the film of this, but the wedding was public and not some special BBC program so they cant copyright it.
@4FabBEATLES - Well digitalstonemason certainly has no right to post this video online! Who do you think paid for broadcasting the wedding? The BBC, who then licensed the broadcast to other TV stations around the world. They too helped foot the bill. Strictly speaking, the Crown probably retains the coyright. But no mere YouTube uploader.
@Roseburg93 - I suggest you as a responsible adult find out how YT's erosion of copyright has destroyed income streams for photographers, musicians and film-makers and their families.
@vidzvoyeur I have bought more stuff from Amazon.uk etc after watching clips on YT, including fostering an interest in whole genres of music, literature and comedy that hadn't appeared on my radar before. The really great thing about YT though is that you can discover the thoughts and opinions of others.
@Roseburg93 The same file sharing thing is producing more online sales. The whole sales streams and channels are changing, the same dvd and cd are going to end. Why the major labels don't want to understand?
@vidzvoyeur it doenst mattter. the ENTIRE wedding is already on youtube by the BBC and ABC and man many other orgnizaitons and people. if its infringement, youtube will take it down. its not up to youtube users to define copyright laws.
@4FabBEATLES - That's complete rubbish ("the ENTIRE wedding") and you know it. The BBC has post a handful of brief highlights from the wedding, and the overseas TV networks even fewer. And none of the musical highlights. For the very reason that they're licensed. The copyright laws are clearly defined in YouTube's terms & conditions which you and I signed up to when we joined. We certainly don't define them ourselves.
I have just listened to John Rutters 'Candlelight Carol' again, even though it's obviously NOT Christmas... But his works truly are AMAZING and make me cry with their simplistic beauty... *sighs* :0)x
His arrangements are always stunning. We sang his arrangement of "For the Beauty of the Earth" when I was in high school and it was always a favorite of our chorus. Rutter never disappoints!

WOW. Absolutely amazing. I thought the most beautiful moments of the song came at the harmonies at these points:
1) 0:47 "rejoice and be glad in it.."
2) 1:16, "..praise him all ye stars and light"
3) 3:31 "he shall defend thee"
I could listen to this on repeat forever. I would love for choirs everywhere to learn an arrangement of this!
